Paying for College

So as I'm making my decisions for college I'm left with the question do I want to go to UVM where it will be pretty much a continuation of high school but only $20,000 a year or do I go where I really want to and pay $40,000+ a year. I have $40,000 in the bank and will be at least $100,000 in debt when I graduate. How the hell do all you guys pay for these expensive colleges? Just take the hit and pay it off? Or you guys just rich? Whatever you only live once and I'm thinking I'm just gonna go with the $40,000 a year.

take out a student loan, that would piss me off so much if my kid did that to me. Just dont be a little shit

student loans are the best bet.

win the lottery is always another option in financial problems as well.

im kinda in the same situation, my parents already paid for in state tuition a while ago so its cheaper, but if i want to go to an out of state school i have to pay for it...im banking on playing DIII hockey somewhere so i cant stay in virginia. what id suggest trying to do is to apply for some kind of financial aid. you can get it based on merit, not because you are poor or what not. another thing is that when you apply for financial aid, i think you can put that if you want me to go to your school i need financial aid because my parents will not support me. also try joining ROTC cus that pays a lot.

If your parents aren't going to help you out with school, you can declare yourself as an independent for financial aid purposes. That means that you have no income and are completely seperate from theirs and you can get alot more money from financial aid.

If you really can't afford it, consider the military, if you are willing to put forth the time and dedication to being in the service after school.

i went to a community college out of high school that was way cheap. my parents paid for it anyway. went to the school i wanted to go to junior/senior year and racked up 22k student debt. my payment now is about 200 bucks a month. ive been paying it a year though and still owe 20k...:(

dude, college is college. the way i look at it is that you dont need to pay a ton of money to get a little better of an education. if its an accredited school then you will get all the education you'll need. if i were to attempt to make an analogy; i dont know if this is going to make any sense but here goes: its like shopping for a car; a new car isnt worth buying because it will be worth half the price in 4 years. the you only thing you get to say is i have a new car (you went to an expensive school). and buying a used car that is a couple of years old is the best deal because its going to be reliable and a fair price (its still a degree that will get you a job). if i were you i'd go with the best school for the money and a school where youll get a lot of financial aid. also apply for a ton of scholarships. so yea i hope all of that made sense because i kinda just thought that up.

have any of you guys used fastweb.com for scholarships and actually gotten any? So far I've just filled out local scholarships because I feel like I have a chance. The ones on fastweb are nationwide and I feel like there's no use in putting in all this time if I don't have a chance

if going to a better school will help for your job, and youll be making enough money to pay that off kind of quick i say go for the more expensive. it will most likely be worth it in the long run. especially if this profession is common, the better college would put you ahead of the rest of the candidates for the job your looking for...

I'm lucky enough to have my parents pay for college, but if I was in your situation, I would probably go to whatever one you like most, even if it costs more. In the long run it will be worth it. I would rather pay 40k a year to be happy at a better school then to pay 20k a year for a school that I don't really want to be at.

Thats pretty much the reason im going to a suny school and not a private one. My parents said that they will pay half of it, but thats still like 20g's a year. and after interest and shit on loans you have to pay soooo much more back. and how the hell do you have 40g's saved up already.

This is how I see it... If you really love those schools and don't mind having to pay that off, then go to BU or WPI

But if you just slightly like BU and WPI better then go to UVM because UVM is a great school and you can make the school as good as you want

dude you may want to rethink...100 000 in dept is a fuckin lot but if you think you can pay it off go for it. is that including interest?

woah im in the same situation only uvm and all state schools are free, but i reallllly want to go out of state.

fastweb scholarships are probably a stretch, but ive still filled out about 7 off of there. i figure, if i get a grand, it was worth the two hours on an essay. its kinda late now, but apply for anything you mite qualify for, even if its a long shot. im realllly needing some scholarhip cash myself (speaking of which, i have to go finish an essay for one, haha)

depends what your wanting to go to school for. If your going to school for engineering or business or something that is pretty sure fire youll get a decnt paying job the moment you walk outta school then go for the more expensive school. If your going to be a teacher or take sciences or something, do to the school that costs less.

I dont know how you Americans do it. University in Canada is like 6 grand a year for tuition. a couple thousand more for books, but my 4 years cost 50,000-60,000 CAN for everything.

im going to bucknell and its like the third most expensive school in the country..

but im not paying.. that would suck.  i would go to BU if i were you, even though it costs more. it would be worth it in the long run for a job, depending on what field you go into.

Bro if you have $40,000 saved up, you have a good head start at college payments. Most people have to take out loans and pay them back over years. If you already have that much saved up, go wherever you feel most comfortable at. You have plenty of time to pay back student loans...its not like you have to pay $40,000 up front each year.

Really? I've always planned on paying for my kids college. I figured I would set up an account when they're born and put money in it every year and then have enough to pay for all of college once they're ready to go. That way, if my kid gets scholarships and stuff I'll have some fat cash to buy a new car for my midlife crisis.

That's what mutual funds are for! (not really, but they work well).

My dad paid for my sister's college career, is paying for mine, and paid for my parental's first house on mutual fund earnings. It's a beautiful thing.

I get like $15G a year from my college and then I had some outside scholarships and the rest is from my inheritance from my grandmother.  You should just apply for as many scholarships, grants, etc. as possible, even the $500 ones on the internet--it adds up.  Or get a job that will give you tuition reimbursement.  But it's perfectly normal to be $100G in debt when you graduate--and that might not be a big deal depending on what you're going into.

yo i wish my parents would pay for my college. i turned 18 was still in high school and my dad was like " get out of my house" so i joined the millitary, marine corps reserves to be exact. i served 1 yr active duty in the states and 9 months active duty in iraq but now im back in my hometown serving one weekend a month and they pay for me to go full time to any state college i want to. its pretty bad ass. and ohh yea the millitary isnt really that hard, i mean u could even do it the pussy way and go army or navy or air force lol jus playin.

but yea... even if your parents wont pay for it u have to be 22 yrs old to be bale to declare your self financially independent, at least in NY state thats what my college told me.

Go millitary reserves its not that bad and girls LOVE IT. ;)

haha no prob trust i get it all the time from my active duty friends. but wait i did say i was over in iraq so ummmm i dont think thats the pussy way. lol its all good though.

No way mang, I wouldnt go to the 40K a year college, not worth it unless you want to be like a doctor or some shit. Go to an instate school and save that money. 40 Grand could easily pay for your 4+ year tuition and rent/food/partying in Montana for an instate student. Hell it could probably pay for most of a out of state students 4 year tuition.

Seriously imo, 40K a year for tuition is robbery, especially for a guy just out of high school.

Also, you will have to take many general ed classes to fulfill requirements, it seems stupid to me to take those at some rediculously expensive school.

Basically If I were you, go the cheapest route you can go to get to a good university and save that money as long as you can. You could even take gen ed classes at a community college if you want, but universities just have alot more culture to them

come to finland, all universities are free, plus you get paid $600 a month from the government just for studying...

same i just had this huge dilemma about it yesterday

its gonna be like the hardest fucking thing on earth. champlain is now like 33,000 $ a year and its gonna be madness paying for it. holy shit im in for it

my parents didnt do that cause theyre money whores. sure as hell could have afforded it though. i know im gona do it for my kids. i wont like go out of my way to make sure i pay for every penny ill help them but they can pay some too. i figure that if they drop some of their own money on it they will try harder because they dont wanna pay again

go where you want to go. dont go somewhere based on money. go where you are going to be happy, or else youll just end up transfering one day.

i agree...but if for some reason you go to middlebury and get no scholarships or financial aid, youre going to be in debt for a mother of a long time. which will suck ass. unless your parents are really rich and pay foryou all the way through.

but i agree, your priority in choosing a college shouldnt be money. find the right school for you first, then worry about the money. theyre not out to screw you over sooo if you really need help...im sure you can do something about it
