This is an email that was sent to me, and for those who haven't seen it, its just more reason (as if you didn't have enough) NOT to vote for Paul Martin.

Liberal governments have not made my life any better.

I am not voting for Paul Martin's Liberals.

I am voting against Paul Martin and his Liberal Party on June 28, 2004.

I am voting for Stephen Harper and the Conservative Party.

Do I like the Conservatives?

Not particularly......I don't really like Politics.

I am not political by nature.

I am not passionate about politics.

I am a middle age guy (48).

I live in a small house on a fairly quiet street in Edmonton.

I have a wife, Kathy, and two children (ages 19 and 17).

I have no pets.

I am a middle class man.

I don't usually say too much.

Until now.

Now I am going to say something!

In 35 of the past 37 years, Canada has been ruled by:

(1) Pierre Trudeau - a multi-millionaire lawyer from Quebec.

(2) Brian Mulroney - a multi-millionaire lawyer from Quebec.

(3) Jean Chretien - a multi-millionaire lawyer from Quebec.

(4) And now we are going to vote for Paul Martin???? - a

multi-millionaire

lawyer from Quebec???

The leader of the Conservative party, Stephen Harper, is:

(1) Not a lawyer.

(2) Not a multi-millionaire.

(3) Not from Quebec.

Stephen Harper says that the Conservative party will:

(1) Reduce my taxes.

(2) Pay off the national debt as fast as they can.

(3) Shrink the size and influence of the federal government.

That's good enough for me.

I'm going to give the Conservative party a chance with my vote.

But wait!

Paul Martin is now saying the same thing.

My mother told me forty years ago:

'Fool me once - shame on you.

Fool me twice - shame on me!'

The Liberals have had 34 years to be financially responsible.

Remember, Jean Chretien was Trudeau's Finance Minister.

Remember also, Paul Martin was Jean Chretien's Finance Minister

These people have been raising my taxes for thirty four years.

They have been mis-spending my tax dollars for 34 years.

You say:

-Yep, these will go down if the cons get in.

(2) My family's share of the national debt has increased.

-If you have aproblem with this, you certainly should not be voting conservative. Their fiscal policy is a joke.

-See the above.

(4) My waiting time to see a doctor has increased.

-Again, if health care is a big issue for you, con is NOT the party for you. Guess what the first area of funding on the chopping block will be when Harper figures out he's short 50 billion dollars?

(5) My concerns for my family's safety have increased.

-Not sure if any party will assuage your paranoia, buddy... but if we start going to war alongside the U.S., you'll have a lot more to worry about in that respect, just as they do.

(6) My costs to educate my children have increased.

-Costs to educate your children? Excuse me? Do you send them to private schools? Inferior education for more money... yeah, you're bright. What you should be worried about is the decline in the QUALITY of their education that will come about under a Harper government... education is far from a high priority for the cons.

(7) Government interference in my life has increased.

-I don't know what to do with this one.... you feel they've been spying on you, or something? If the government is interfering with you, maybe you should stop doing illegal things, because that's the only situation that I can think of that would explain this comment.

(8) My personal debt has increased.

See my 2nd comment. Debt reduction is a high priority for both the Liberals and Conservatives; however, Harper is living in an economic dreamworld and isn't exactly trustworthy where finance is concerned.

(9) My income has stayed more or less the same.

-How the hell do you blame the government for THAT? Take some responsibility for your own life... Jesus.

(10) My savings have decreased.

-Stop spending so much money. See my last comment.

(11) The buying power of my dollar, in Canada, has decreased.

-Uh, wrong. Considering what's been going on in the U.S., it's not doing badly at all.

(12) The value of my dollar, in the U.S., has decreased.

-Again, see above.

(13) My trust of elected officials has decreased.

-And yet you trust HARPER!?! Wow... politicians in general aren't trustworthy... but you'd have to be an idiot to believe that that man will come through on half of what he's promised.

-Can we have an example of why, perhaps, rather than an arbitrary assertion? I can't say i agree with this.

Just another blind idiot, voting without thinking, hoping things will get better when in fact they'll only get worse. Please, take an interest, use your brain and you'll be forced to face reality: Harper is lying to you.

PS, I'd also appreciate it if people, in future, refrained from using 'lest we forget', a term honouring the dead allied soldiers over two world wars, as a slogan to advance their political agendas. It's indefensibly disrespectful.

To summarize:

Who would you rather trust? The Liberal finance minister who brought us balanced budget after balanced budget, and even surpluses that cover the so called 'scandals' that the Conservatives are harping about these days. Or, a man with little political experience other than doing a very half assed job at being the leader of the official opposition(proof? Where was he when it was time to question the spending programs that lead to those 'scandals?), and who's been part of a radical group known the National Citizen's Coalition?

How about this: Do you really want someone who quotes Fraser Institute figures as gospel to be your next prime minister? I certainly hope not.

That being said, you're best off voting for a party you actually believe in. That means going out and studying every party platform, and then making an informed decision based on factors that are important to you. If everyone did that, rather than voting out of fear, or spite, maybe our democracy wouldn't be so broken.

while political and economic conservatives ( not the conservative public) are often (not always) level headed and logical... theyre also just as often complete assholes. for example: some guy in the newspaper. he wrote about why oil isnt going to disappear and why we dont need to worry about it at all. market economies will solve all ofour problems because when it gets too hard to make oil, well just make something better. never mind air and water pollution. its the same as that simpsons where the frogs invade town and then they let snakes go after them... and then mongooses after them etc....

um but yeah, i dont like the concept of exploitation in general and like to keep it to a minimum.

This whole thing is amusing, really. I was one of those kids that read the newspaper and went along with my parents to vote as early as grade 5. I used to think I'd vote in every election and strongly supported the conservatives. I have seen the Canadian government's age-old battle between the grits and tories. Just trust me when I say that one is no better than the other. Vote all you want, if not this election I'm sure in the next the Liberals will have a spectacular Mulroney-esque political meltdown in the polls. Speaking of which, do you remember when Mulroney handed Kim Campbell the sinking ship called the Conservative party in a last ditch effort to try to save face in an election everyone knew would be a blow-out? Cretien has just done the same thing. The shoe is simply on the other foot.

Anywho, vote in your darling Conservatives, but just know that they've shit the bed before and they'll do it again. The real problem lies in the whole underlying political system in Canada. Canadian voters are like rats gnawing on an electrical cord, they keep getting zapped but they just keep on chewing. Alternative parties get no attention because 'people dont trust them'. All I gotta say is I'd vote for a chimpanzee before I'd ever cast a vote for a Liberal, Conservative or NDP candidate again. How much waste and abuse do you people have to see before you get fed up??? Voting in Canada is simply an indication that you are comfortable with mediocrity.

Now if you've listened to nothing else in this rant, listen to this: mark my words, in 10 years, everyone will be bitching about the Conservatives and the good old Liberals will be right there. Its been happening ever since this country has had a government. And dont give me the 'vote or you can't complain' line. I want a whole new system that stresses accountability, not just a temporary change in scenery. I agree with you 221, the underlying problem is the canadian political system, but change wont come very easily. The conservatives are for a triple-E senate, and thats one thing I think must be changed, and that I hope will happen.

As for complaining, there will always be something to complain about. I hate Harper's/Torries stance on Abortion, Gay Marriage and Weed, however, I agree with him on many more issues. And in my opinion, he'll have a much easier time making the changes I want to see (more military spending, forgein affairs investment, stopping Kyoto...) than being able to get rid of a woman's right to choose.

I posted the email above to remind people what the liberals have done in the past 11 years, and by all means you can form your own opinions, you make like the things they've done. I don't, and I will vote conservative because I believe they represent a Canada that I can be MORE proud of.
