1909

Known as the deadliest workplace fire ever

The Triangle shirtwaist factory was a sweatshop that employed lots of immigrants and young women for very low wages

In 1909, the workers went on strike

their employers tried to force them back to work

A meeting was held in November, after 6 months of striking

Tens of thousands walked out after that, the companies still wouldn’t meet their demands

J.P Morgan’s daughter helped the cause, giving them press coverage, and the employers eventually had to give in

They had their demands met, but were not given a union

Later that year, a cigarette started a fire in the Triangle factory on the 8th floor

200 workers in the floor above weren’t warned

Many didn’t make it out during the panic

It spread very quickly due to all the flammable materials in the building

Many people jumped out of windows to try to escape the fire

145 people died, 53 had jumped from the building, 50 were incinerated, and they were all young women, many were teenagers

1 person that jumped survived, but later died

This fire brought a lot of attention to the conditions of the factory

30 new laws were passed about industrial practices

Labor laws were also established a couple years later
