how do you set a password to an app on windows?

i know its something easy to do i just compleatly forget how to

do you mean like if you want a password on microsoft word or something? I dont think you can do that. If you figure out how to tell me

I know how , but it's hard to explain... actually you need to boot on a disk ( Bart_pe or Linux STD ) and then copy the ''SAM'' file and the ''SYSTEM'' file in the path C:\WINDOWS\system32\config. you can't simply copy them from windows because it is being used by the system.

Once you extracted those two files you want to ''BRUTEFORCE'' them using L0phtCrack.LC5 (app). It may take up to two days depending of the complexity of the password. Once you did that you will see all the admin and their password.

( all this is if you want to enter into a computer using windows xp that use a password that you dont have )

oh and if the computer don't boot automaticly on the CD, AND if the bios has a password, then your fucked.

There you go...

isn't that how you crack a passwd??? I think he wants to set one.

original dude, you are gonna have to be more specific as to what you are needing.

Just come out and say it:

"Guys i need to lock the folder with all my gay porn in it so my parents don't find it."

the best your gona be able to do in windows is just make the program only acessible though a folder and pass protect the folder rightclick: properties/security i think and check the box (this will only work if u have a NTFS formated harddrive). if its really that importaint to you, you could use MMC and policy editor to make it so that only your account can use the program, but i wouldnt recommend it. you third option is to install linux

thats to crack a password, he wants to set a pass on apps... please dont try that unless you understand what your doing

^^wow i misunderstood his question. sry about that.

and the guy above me is right , dont do this if you don't really know what you are doing.

Well when you click on an icon weather it be on your desktop or in your start menu, you are really just clicking on a shortcut, to and executable file that resides in a folder.

my best guess it to try to set a password for that particular folder in which the .exe resides.

Protecting a folder seems much more do-able then protecting and .exe.

But i will look into it further.

ok thanks i'll try everyones sugestions.

the reason i want to enable a password is for my macromedia suite. my sister goes onto my computer and messed up everything last time.

i dunno about a password i know you can do something like that if you compress it and i use winzip and you can set a password but what you could do is just right clik on it and in properties find the box that says hidden and clik it then go into tools, folder options, then view then clik the box that says hide hidden folders then you it wont show up and youd have to go back into tools and such and click show hidden folders not a password but it'll stop just some1 on your computer from opening the folder

If you have seprate account (ie. yours is different than your sisters) then set your screen saver to ask for a password when your computer comes back from idle. Save all your files in your my documents then make that folder hidden or set a password for the folder. To set a password for the screen saver right click on your desktop, go to properties then the tab screen then select On resume password protect. Its the same password as your login. Hopefully that helps.
