I just noticed something last night while reading a thread about groms ripping. While I've seen tons of groms grease rails and stomp cork 7 tails exc. I've never seen any kids ripping the backcountry or big mountain faces. Any ideas as to why this is?

most don't have access to it I'm guessing. It would take a long time for those little legs to make it to the top of a mountain.

 
all my friends think that hiking is to hard, then they complain thta they dont get any powder, i am the only one i know that actually does backcountry at my age (13)

i remember the first time i hiked to get powder lines was when i was about 13. now i take it more serious and want to start ridding way more big mt then park.

guys, read the damn thread, its not your preference, its WHY DO KIDS STAY IN THE PARKS VERSUS BC...dumbasses.

as for the question, i think it definately has to do with the hiking...i mean, if it really dumped, and the kids are like less than 5 ft tall...they wont even be able to see over the top of the snow...you'll have to tie a marker to their pack so you can see where they are going...

alot of kids dont have access to it, plus hitting up the park is the cool thing to do. to the average person that doesnt ski, theyll probably be more impressed by somebody doin a dspin than someone ripping a real tech face

 
I just think it's because big mountian takes longer to develope your skills. All the good big mountain riders are a lot older than the good park riders. Most resorts in the west you really don't have to hike to access good big mountain terrain, it's inbounds. So I don't see how that would play into things.

Yeah I think skiing park is more trendy therefore more appealing to the kiddies. Although it could be cuz big mountain takes longer to get good at and is more dangerous.

big mnt at resorts isnt dangerous at all, they have to shell it so that there are no avalanches (there goes that danger) and besides for that there isnt that much to get hurt on, there are alot more dangerous things in the park, although you may not die like u cud big mt u can eat it on a rail, case a jump, overshoot a jump, fall on a jump, i think the park is more dangerous

Avalanche isnt the only thing to worry about at a resort. Just skiing through the woods at my resort you roll up on 50 foot cliffs too rocks. steep ass terain with boulders and cliffs and trees everywhere I wouldnt call it all that safe.

there are kids out there who rip big mtn lines. Whistler had a little kids big mtn contest last year, and the little groms supposedly ripped some pretty big lines. In all fairness though, that's not usually the case, and it might have to do with the fact that big mtn skiing skills just take longer to develop. Kids need time to grow into it, and get comfortable out there.

There's some whistler kids that kill it, and supposedly some little ripper at Alta that makes people 3x his age look stupid.

You have to be good to ski BC.

In the park you just have to know how to jump, do rails and on 150cm skis. Its way different.

Plus the park is trendy.

I live in Ontario and i would much rather ski BC over park, like i travel out west every year just to ski some BC but in Ontario there isnt any so ill ski park because i think racing is gay. And a lot of people in the East probably feel the same way and when you get all these kids together it creates a big number, and kinda makes it seem like everyone is skiing park when really its probably about even.

 
Not much of a park guy at all. I'd rather go steep and deep any day, with the pure adrenaline rush of a sporadic and more than likely modest cliff drop every now and again. Taming big lines is even better than sex - with a few exceptions of course. But not many.
