Park Mob Mentality

So, I was doing a few park laps with my mates today, and we were all at the top and one of my mates was amping himself up to try some spins (he's only tried them a few times). He dropped in and pulled it around, and it was a bit sloppy, but man I was stokeddd! I mean, I feel like I'm stoked for anyone who is progressing their own skill and faces their fears for a trick they're trying to learn. Anyways, some dickheads at the top were trashing him even though I was clearly stoked for my mate. They werent just trashing him though, they were trashing everyone who hit the jump. They would watch someone jump and say "that was terrible", and I would say "who cares man, they look stoked and they're having a good time", and they fucking replied "yeah, well they should try harder and be better". Anyways. I know there's just going to be people like that out there and ya just gotta ignore them, but it ticks me off because when people are intimidating asses like this it deters a lot of people from wanting to get into skiing park (or even just get into the sport in general), which I think is a shame. At the end of the day, just be stoked, there's no need to put others down for their own personal progression.

What are your thoughts on this sort of mentality? Have any of you experienced this when riding park (or anything)?

That's pretty messed NGL. Compare that to pro skiers. I remember the first time I landed a 7 at PC that some pro skiers (I think it was either Mac Forehand or Torin not too sure) were hyping me up so much even though I know it looked terrible. It hyped me up so much and my progression became so much faster after that... The guys you are dealing with sound like dickheads, just have fun + enjoy skiing + build the hype

the best part of skiing is when everyone is feeding off each other and hyping everyone up. From a 180 on a park jump to a double cork 1260, no matter what, everyone should be stoked cause they’re skiing and throwing down. Haters will always hate. Screw em. Keep tellin your mate he’s killing it!

Shame but it has been a thing for years. There is always someone better but some people don't get that.

There's this skatepark near where I used to live had a bowl. Sometimes there would be some heavier sesions or just good skaters chilling. It's the bowl where i really started going around corners, especially frontside. Anyway got where I could drop in and pump around pretty fast just under the coping really cruising and getting nice flowy carves around.

This one dude came up to me and gave me props and was like "you're doing awesome man" or something like that. Dude was airing over the hip, airing out of the deep end, doing cabs, some nice lip tricks etc.

But he saw me go from pushing around in the flat trying to get speed and learn to go around a corner. I wasn't doing anything sick i was one of the worst people skating that day but he was stoked because was trying and getting a lot better.

That's what it's all about. I live being on the drop in of the junp line in the spring snd seeing people hype themselves up to try their first 3 or 5, backflip, cork whatever, and then get it. That's what it's all about. Progression. Anyone who's being ass about that is just a douchey hack.

I think most ppl who shit on other ppl in the park probly arent that good themselves. If a bunch of kids are putzing around getting in the way of the landing that is one thing, but i dont think ive ever seen good park skiers trashing ppl who are trying to learn. But yeah dont worry about it op. If you think of it as efficient market hypothesis these haters are probably democrats who are angry nobody pays them to ski.

Try not to listen to those type of people, I know it is tough but it is just best to keep doing what you are doing and hype yourself and crew up. You and your homies just do your talking with your skiing.

Idk why anyone would down vote this, this has definitely been my experience. Most decent skiers (and all decent people) would never do this.

Ya those dudes sound like pricks and you sound like a good homie.

My response to those comments is always "yeah but it looks like he's having a lot more fun than you!"

Also not saying it's what happened here but I feel like I've been witness to someone convinced they were shitting on them only to find out it was a misunderstanding.

But yes if they were than frig those people, they don't sound representative of what park skiing is at all.

Super wack

hyland hills (kind of) has this mentality, i guess everyone’s really judging. If you’re not good at skiing you don’t get any respect, for example i could cut off and be a dick to any kid who’s not very good at skiing and have no repercussions. This kind of toxic environment make me try EXTRA hard to progress as fast as possible.

From that clip it looks like he's coming through the trail line and you're coming from the side. But I get what you're saying. I'd probably just make a comment to them after like "hey idk if you realized it but you cut me off bank there", decent people will apologize or at least acknowledge it and make a point not to do it again. it could be that he was tunnel visioning while filming which can definitely happen. But obviously if that same skier does the same thing every run I'd say that's a problem.

Happens all the time... I was trying a new rail and ate it double ejected, these chads at the top were all like “oh how he double eject” that rail isn’t even that bad but then they both proceeded to slide 3/4 of the poop tube.(they just straight aired the jump over and over) So Dolan is right they are just chads who probably can’t hit a poop tube.

I just changed resorts and everyone there is so much better than I, the vibes are good but it still pushes me extra to want to progress a ton so I can impress. Closing weekend I landed 4 new rail tricks because of this

There’s a kid a ski with sometimes who’s like this. We’ve been trying to teach him 3s and rails and just try to be supportive but he can’t reciprocate and be supportive to other people. He’ll trash people way better than himself and just give off a weird vibe and nobody wants to ski with him

First off those guys are dicks and people like them are the reason why people don’t want to try park, because they don’t want to be yelled at by people like them.

It's insecurity.

It doesn't help the confidence either, like the time about 30 4 year old mocked my pizza style, it was the breaking point for me.

This used to happen a lot at my hill a few years ago. Sadly it was some of my “friends” who would sit there and chirp kids at the top whenever they would just fall off a rail or something. Kids wild do it to me too they used to shit on me for riding V’s when I could barely do swaps.

a few years went by and I got a lot better than all those kids who used to chirp and just bring negativity to the park, and they all gained respect. Sounds super cringe but at my hill I’m one of the “big dogs” and a lot of little shredders kinda look up to me, as I did the same thing when I was their age. Now I’m always hyping those kids up, telling them their front 2 was bolts, just overall positivity for the younger crowd. There was a few bigger dudes that did that to me when I was younger and it did wonders for the soul, so I try to make the park as welcoming as possible.

that kinda mentality really spread at the hill this year. Whether homies are hucking cork7s or just trying to learn back 2s off rails, everyone is on the same page and everyone is truly homies. I could be lapping with a tight knit crew of homies where we are all trying new shit every run, or with a bunch of the younger 12-13 year old kids learning how to do rails, and I’m having just as much fun either way. There are no “cliques” here anymore, there’s no one who ever chirps at the top, or shits on lil Jimbo cus he fell off the rail early and ate shit. The only “clique” involves literally everyone at the hill and it’s awesome. One big family.

Not sure how often you Ride at your hill, as I’ve ridden mine 5 days a week all winter for the past few years now. My point is, your positivity and stoke will spread and overtake all things else.

Were they 15

came here to say this, sounds like classic teenagers being teenagers.

Apparently when your frontal lobe isn't fully developed in hinders your ability to recognize the negative consequences your actions might have on others. Which is why teenagers and kids in general are just shitty people, and people in their 20s and above are typically chill and friendly.

No actually, they looked like they were maybe early 20's?

Regardless of age it's definitely not an attitude one should aspire to have, but that said I don't believe that is representative of the majority of park skiers, and it's crappy you had that experience.

Just don't dwell on it know that most of us are super stoked that everyone's out there having a great time and learning new things.

Follow them going faster than them into a jump. When you collide, push them foreword so they overshoot and you get a good landing. Trust me it works.

Turn their dins all the way down for good measure.

Step on their heel pieces when they drop.

Move their skis to a different rack so they think they're stolen for a few seconds.

this shit happened to me the other day, a train of like 15 boarders came through right as i’m coming up to a tube and i got pushed off the feature like i was getting boxed out of the lane by shaq. felt bad

At my "resort" (Snowdome Bispingen), there are some locals who are filming the slams of others and put them on Instagram.

Knowing this and the mentality of these dudes makes it pretty hard for a 34yo to try a lipslide on a box. ?
