Park city

My family is taking a trip out to Park City from Dec. 25-Jan. 3. We're probably only going to ski for 4 days so we have a little extra time to kill. Anyone know of any must see places to stop in at? Also, would it be worth the investment to get a rental car and check out any other mountains around?

what are your accommodations like? are you staying at the base of PC/Canyons/Deer Valley or are you using some of the hotels in/around town? PC has a great transit system that runs late for free and theres a plethora of transportation companies in town to choose from. prices vary in terms of types of service/vehicles but im pretty confident holiday/season rates will be already in place. I personally prefer a rent-a-car because while it is fun to ski PC, being there for more than 5+ days depending on the terrain open it will get boring especially with all the people expected to come into town. everywhere else will be surely busy as well but its worth popping over to Alta/Snowbird or Big Cottonwood Canyon for a day. parents LOOOOOOVE alta cuz of all the skier-only stuff and there are some great crusiers to rip for them while you go and screw around with their offerings.

I don't really fuck with Main St. too much because im too broke to afford anything there, but there are some cool shops to pop into and tons of delicious places to eat. The Jibberish Store seems to be a favorite and some ski shops as well. The Outlets in the Junction have more shops though. I think they have a salomon outlet store and an Oakley vault. Tons of other cool places to eat as well across the way in redstone plaza/newpark.

We're staying at the base of PC in the whyndam resort. Unfortunately, Alta is out of the picture because my brother is a snowboarder. Are the snow conditions any better/worse at any of the surrounding areas?

Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it.

I was just at snowbird yesterday with a buddy and it was a blast for the amount of terrain they have open. I did talk to a patroller last weekend who said if this current storm moving in performs well, they should be able to drop the ropes on more stuff. definitely worth checking out, this storm should set us up nice for the Christmas/new year period without a doubt.

id say its hit or miss, really. canyons can be just as good, bad, or even better than PC on some given days. It depends on how it snows on the Wasatch back. You could have an 8'' inch day at PC whereas at the top of the canyons, they're reporting 12-14''. its been weird the past couple of years. some places in the same general areas get more snow than the other resorts. lake effect works in mysterious ways. A rule of thumb I go with is there is generally more snow in the cottonwoods (Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, Brighton). its worth checking out Brighton or Solitude seeing as your brothers a snowboarder. I love Brighton and it has a cool small resort, big mtns feel to it which I love. especially if you come from Podunk ski areas back in the Midwest/east coast.

Up north in Ogden/Huntsman area are places like Beaver Mtn, Powder Mtn, Snowbasin. There is a new small ski area called Nordic Valley that I hear is pretty decent but its no different than something youre probably used to at your local hill.

It all depends on snowfall. All the graphs, charts, potential liquid amounts, etc. are indicating anywhere in between 1-2ft. Lake effect and some orographic lifts have helped us get a few inches real quick when they haven't forecasted it, so there is always the chance to get more or get skunked like we've been used too.

Thanks so much for all the info. This trip's my first trip out west so I'm incredibly stoked. I'm sure ill be happy with anything out west as my local hill has 300 vert, but I'm just trying to make the most out of the trip. Again, thanks so much for all of that.

Nordic Valley is the 3rd or 4th oldest ski area in Utah. For those of us who skied there as children have somewhat of a love/hate relationship with the place.

is it the worse out of all the northern areas or is it pretty decent?

Fun for the kids. It's low elevation with two lifts, so usually sucks. Kinda like a shitty hometown you can't wait to get away from.

ahhh I see. thanks for the info, though.

by the way OP, it just wont stop snowing here. An additional 10"-13" fell last night which brings storm totals in some areas to well over 30", id kill to be out today haha.

Op, we are in business here in PC. Deer valley is reporting about 33" or so in the past two days, the cottonwoods got some action but the wasatch back/bcc are the winners today.

We stayed around the canyons side of PC today and were still able to find some fresh stuff. Lines aren't bad, snow was great, Utah is the shit. We ended up getting a 5 day epic pass so we're stuck between park city and canyons, but it's still going to be a kick ass week. So stoked tho
