I have been debating this shit for too long but when I go to tell my friends I am gettin 180 cm skis they freak out saying how they will be too long for me and I shouldent go more than 170. Well I am currently almost 6 foot and I do own a pair of 170 cm skis, should I go longer and get the 180 cm skis?

measure yourself in cm. if your gonna be ridding all around/park, go head high. if your just gonna be jibbing, take a few cm off. if your gonna be ridding real agressive/bc, add another 10-15 cm.

5'9 178cm..it all depends on what you believe you can handle. You should know by now (assuming you are a good skier) what ski length is best suited. If you own a 170cm ski, ask yourself if you think it is long enough.

as everyone knows yer always taller in the morning so when I wake up I am 6'10'..but the time I get to the mountain Im 5'6'. my hair tickles me tho. so I ride Line skiboards 196's.

yay skiing

hold on... what do you ski? cause if you ski backcountry they would be fine but if your not and just skiing park go wtih a 176 TOPS

Gregg, you do consider flex for twin tips (unless you're one of the kids who pic for graphics), and waist width. But turn radius isn't ALL to important as far as park skiing goes. Or powder. And if you aren't riding park or pow, don't get a twin tip. If you're getting something like an Atomic Metron with it's crazy sidecut then you want to go shorter. But (please don't kill me for this guys) twin tips are all generaly the same. So wondering about sidecut doesn't matter much.

And now forget all the bullshit i've just said.

turning radius should be somewhat of a proitrity, i mean if you ride a ski with a 28m turning raduis and a ski with a 18m tunring radius, there is going to be a huge difference. it all depends on what you want to ride, how your ride, and what you like to ride. But the majority of twin tips are in same turning radius range anyhow.

I'm one of those people who can only afford one pair of skis every two or so years - I assume that most people here can't afford a quiver ever year as well. You're right, if a person isonly skiing park, they don't need to worry about turn radius, but how many people only ski in the park and never ride the rest of the mountain?

Just because you do not need a tight turning radius for powder skiing doesn't mean its not important. It's still important to make sure you don't get a 18m radius ski for pow, you'd want 25 and up.

I am getting mixed reviews here, I live out east, so not much powder here, I am around 6 feet tall, and I like to ski both the park and all mtn equally. Is a 180 cm ski gonna really affect my park and pipe ability?

~180 would probably be good in a wider ski. ~185 in a narrower one. There aren't many options (IMHO) for an all mountain twin these days. You could take a look at the Line Assassin MTX (it comes in 186). I've never ridden it, so I can't tell you anything more than what you can read online, but I figure you've got to be able to trust the ski companies a little, right? The Volkl V-Pro seems pretty popular among east-coasters. I've also heard that the Rossi B2 is okay for a run or two in the park - I've *HEARD* that, I don't have any on-snow experience with it. However, if the B2 skis anything like my Dragons, they may be worth it (-:

I think I just heard someone say that there aren't many options in all-mountain twins these days. Exqueeze me? Baking powder? Not true.

Anyway dude, I know you're getting a ton of advice here and probably well over half of it is complete bullshit, but here's my advice, take it how you will. If you're almost 6 ft. I wouldn't get anything under 180 ON GENERAL PRINCIPLE unless you're never going to leave the park or you're planning on winning some World Cup slalom races. Something 180 or above will give you the stability you need to get out of the park, and you'll be very surprised to find out how much fun a longer ski handles in the park.

My own example? I'm barely 5'9' and ride 186cm, and I love those puppies to death.

Just to follow up on some of Kamikaze's advice...

A lot of people seem to have fallen into a sort of 'long skis truck, short skis suck' rut, probably in reaction to the ever shortening of skis that was happening a couple of years back. The right ski for you is the one that you find to be most appropriate after a few on snow demos and some good info. You probably don't have the chance to demo on snow, so we'll start with some generalities that I find to be true, and that I use when helping my customers select a ski from the wall.

1- shorter skis turn faster

2- shorter skis are usually a little more unstable at high speeds, BUT this can depend on width

3- the wider a ski is, the 'slower' it goes edge to edge, but then skiing technique and simply getting used to your new skis will change that pretty quickly, as will some rise under your bindings if you're too lazy to deal with the width

4-a longer ski will feel/maybe be faster

5-a longer ski wil usually require more effort to turn

6-Finding a long ski that is really soft is a hard thing to do(no matter what some morons will say about K2s and Salomons)

So, going with some of this, examine your skiing. Where do you ski? If your answer is mostly park, then you can afford to go shorter. If your answer is only big mountain style lines, whether out of bounds, or even inbounds at places like Whistler-Blackcomb, go longer. If your answer is 'a little bit of both', you can probably go medium length. If your answer is 'I'm a complete fuckbag who doesn't know ass from dick and can't ski worth shit', go shorter.

Now, if, like most kids I deal with, your answer is 'I ride about 33% park, 33% 'bigish mtn lines', and 33% fucking around with my friends anywhere on the mountain, including some groomed once in a while', then it gets easy. Taking into account your height, weight, etc, I'd probably slot you into a something between 175-185, mid-fat. 80-86 mm at the waist, though you could go up to 90-95 depending where you are. Keep in mind that I ski Whistler almost exclusively, so 'midfat' to me is 'pretty damn fat' to most people.

Having gone through all that, I know damn well what you're going to do. You're going to pick your skis based on the graphics. I think Line, Armada, Volkl, K2, and 4Frnt have pretty cool graphics, so you could just randomly pick a midfat twintip in the 170-180 size range, and you'll be ok.

Next time, try your local shop. Sure, it's probably filled with idiot students making $5.50 an hour plus commission, but it's still better than the internet.
