is probably the best new band that i have heard in a long time. i absolutely love this band especially their lyrics. if you havent heard of them, you should look them up and buy their cd. anyways, theres a topic. discuss...

yeah there awsome, but I dont know why all you people say they sound just like falloutboy. I think they have a very unique style.

All I ever hear is Panic! at the Disco this and Panic! at the Disco that....

Never heard them, but all the cool kids are into them so

i had a few classes with the lead singer......all he ever sang was fall out boy in guitar class.....hate em, pretty much lookin for the easiest way into the industry and got signed by none other than the dude from fall out boy....anyone can sing with a frog in their throat.....o well, they have a lot more goin for them than i do, they are tourin with fall out boy and everyone wants their nuts, not too bad of a way to live lol.

i live in san diego and i hate all that fall out boy punk/pop hawhoren hieghts what ever you want to call it shit, but for some reason i am in love with Panic! i think it has something to do with how good the guys voice is and how its kinda electronic and extremely dancable.

good band. the singer does sound just like the guy from fall out boy but i think they lyrics and music style are different. i actually thought it was fall out boy the first time i heard them.

fallout boy discovered them, that might explain a lot.

they are hit and miss with me, but as long as they don't lose that elecrtronica edge, they are good in my books.

same here...my friend put it in and i was like ah get that shit outta here and he was like its not fall out boy...i didnt believe him

dude panic is gonna sell out

like fall out boy

like taking back sunday

like underoath

like a bunch of good bands that changed their sound to be trend

i dont listen to emo anymore

hardcore is the way to go cause they will never be on the radio or mtv

Who cares if it's sold out man, you're changing your style because Fall Out Boy sold out. But noone should listen to music because it's "underground"

Panic! is deff a great band, their cd is awesome. going to their concert along with the academy is on feb. 5th.

in addition, selling out isnt really a bad thing. when fall out boy was on mtv i did not care at all. more people just like them too thats all

I'm not saying that im changing cause of underground im saying because trend shows that when bands sell out they change their music style

their song... "lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her pants off=really freakin good

i've seen zao at target too... though since we are arguing genres, ETID isn't really a hardcore band. lol i consider them one, but the purists sure don't.

i try to avoid genre conversations cause they usually end up giving me a headache. coolest genre of the minute though? gyspsy punk. gogol bordello would be a good example.

Ten years ago, who would've guessed that emo would usurp punk as the genre du jour for angst-ridden teens. By the late 1990s, most fans of the genre's second wave were abandoning it. Many of the best bands had split up, while the handful that were left were moving toward a more straightforward pop rock sound. But just as it appeared over, the scene suddenly exploded, giving birth to an entire new generation of slick, generic, mall-store neo-emo. It's like the bartender yelled last call, the house lights came on, and then at the last minute, he decided to keep the club open all night serving Cokes. So now, 20 years after Rites of Spring's only full-length album was released, we've arrived at Panic! at the Disco's A Fever You Can't Sweat Out.

Where does one begin to describe this steaming pile of garbage? You've already seen the ridiculous name, so let's try a few of song titles on for size. Track two is called "The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage", and it's followed by "London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines". If those don't quite do it for you, check out "I Write Sins Not Tragedies", or my personal favorite, "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off".

But of course, the asinine song titles and the moronic band name have nothing on the actual songs. The usual guitar, bass, and drums are augmented by drum machine beats and synths that would be more at home blaring over the P.A. at your local gym than in anything one might consider enjoyable music. The production, handled by Matt Squire, a guy who is certainly no stranger to radio-friendly emo, is slick and polished. Vocalist Brendon Urie's impassioned, warbling vocals are so strained it's as if he might just burst into tears at any moment. This poor guy's heart must get broken on a daily basis or something. And if it wasn't bad enough, someone convinced him to add some fancy effects on a track or two that make it sound like someone is lightly karate chopping him across the throat while he sings.

The lyrics are just the sort of vague teen heartache you'd expect. In "Camisado", Urie croons, "You're a regular decorated emergency/ The bruises and contusions will remind you what you did when you wake," sliding up to a falsetto while keyboards shimmer behind him. In "Time to Dance", which utilizes some sort of poorly realized gun-as-a-camera metaphor, he belts out, "When I say shotgun, you say wedding/ Shotgun/ Wedding", and "Give me envy/ Give me malice/ Give me attention/ Give me a break." Yeah, you and me both, kid.

It's sad that this is what emo has become. The genre's always had some irritating characteristics, but this newest batch of heartbroken heartthrobs has managed to build their careers solely out of those characteristics. The whining, the emotionally exposed lyrics, and the passionate choruses are there, but there's no sincerity, creativity, or originality.

i love you go huck yourself

that band is worthless

me and my friends make fun of them so much by running around yelling "shotgun wedding"

thats awesome. i'd like to see them play live, but i think they are europe only for now? you know anything about possible tours?

i read fight club and choke and started to read a few others. the stories are good, but the writing style is shit (in my opinion). almost like the opposite of harry potter. i fucking hate those stories, but its undeniable that the lady has incredible skill with the english language.

i like books like catch-22, angela's ashes, 100 years of solitude the hitchhiker's guide series and the alchemist... so its really no surprise i'm not into his books as they are completely different in style and tone. i don't know if you would consider any of those guys contemporary. douglas adams is from the 80s, frank mccourt is from the 90s, and the rest are a bit older, but not exactly OLD.

maybe i'll try survivor next. i really do like the stories and what he is doing... just not his style and composition. catch-22 was very mantra-ish too. its one of the things i totally dug about it.

the harry potter thing... i think the simplisity is one of the most impressive things. she writes about fairly complex things in a SUPER simple and easy to read style that has amazing flow. she writes for children afterall, so its not surprise its simple. i think its very difficult to write GOOD simple things, just like some of the best songs are very very simple. i guess i just admire her use of the language. i don't really like the books, but lady has talent.

that makes perfect sense. i definetly agree that she doesn't really have anything to say. sounds to me like you appreciate what is being told, where as i tend to appreciate how its being told. i love a good plot, but i am a total sucker for the "art" of language.

falloutboy doesn't sound THAT much different than they did before they went big. to me it mostly just sounds like they have the same producer.

I disagree, I find Fall Out Boy, strongly altered their style to achieve a more "pop" sound. I also found the lyrics much bitter and creative in the past. This is just an opinion.

the poppy sound you hear is most likely from them having a decent producer. producers really do make a world of difference. as far as them being less bitter these days... who the hell would be bitter if they were in a rock band touring the globe? i say anyone that thinks that sucks is prettymuch a total posuer.

for the record, i dislike falloutboy, but they have always been incredibly nice and easy to work with. having worked with them in a professional setting, my opinion is that they have no "sold out" so to speak, but rather evolved a bit and are living the dream.

first of all, i dont see how you can say that there is no creativity or originality in their lyrics - or their song titles for that matter - or their name. their lyrics are some of the most original that i have heard in any genre. and as for their song titles, how can you say that those are not original? most bands just name their songs after a line from their chorus.

secondly, the lyricist is not the same person as the vocalist. Thats what it said in Alternative Press, anyway.

as for the lyrics, only about half of them are drawn from real life experiences, while the other half are just made up (also according to AP), adding to their originality.

this is true. TTTYG was the best. amazingly well done album. cork tree had a different sounds, except for the select few songs, such as sugar were going down. id take TTTYG anyday over cork tree.

panic! at the disco sounds different to me. i dont know if patrick stump and the pancic guy are friends, so who knows how infulenced the panic! guy way. as far as i know, pete wentz is his main squeeze. wentz even went as far as to tell brandon flowers of the killers that they are "jelous" that another synth band got popular.

frankie mccourt writes pretty damn well.

here's a tip

stop listening to AP

not a bad mag but most of thier reviews suck. by the way i didnt write that whole thing it is a review from Pitchfork.com

The first time i heard them I didnt like th vocal, but now I like it alot its something different. "Nails for Breakfast and Tacks for Snacks" Is their best song imo

lyrics are shitty and cliche.

music is a rip off of fall out boy... why do you think they are on their label?

production is amazing, but i fucking hate shit that is a formulaic attempt at being the next big thing.

and god damn are they catchy

there is a difference between

catchy music and good music

they do sound a lot like Fall OUt boy but they arnt bad seeing that i like FOB too. They are faster and more techno i guess

I like them alot. The singer is alot like Fall Out Boy, but that doesn't matter to me, Fall Out Boy isnt bad. But the way they play their music is just unique. It's good shit.
