Panasonic GH5

BH Photo and Video just sat down with Panasonic to go over the new GH5.

Considering selling my GH4 to buy one.

God damn, those specs!

Just moved up to the FS100 and the form factor is too amazing I don't think I'll ever go back to dslr/mirrorless ever again honestly. #saveupforRED haha

I'm not sure what your frame of reference is here, but $2k for this camera is so fucking cheap. IT SHOOTS 4K 422 10-bit IN CAMERA.

If you can find a camera with those specs for the same price I will be amazed.

It's expensive to me because I'm a highschool student that has a minimum wage job, but, like i said, the camera is insane but it's just way to expensive for me. I was struggling to buy a used gh3 for $380 lmao

Understandable we were all in that position. I still struggle to upgrade a lot of equipment at the moment. Your first comment just said it was expensive and now that you explained yourself it is easier to understand where you are coming from.

Here is some low light testing....

Yessir I fuck with Sony so hard now, just shooting with my FS700, and VX2000 for Filler and funny shit. Honestly you can get a used fs100 with a bunch of shit or a FS700 body for the same price as the GH5.

I always hated shooting with a DSLR but never had the money to jump to a actual cinema camera.

Now I have the luxury of being able to work 60+ plus hours.

Until the gh5, you had to buy a $10k camera to get even close to 422 10 bit without an external recorder and that at 4k is pretty impressive for $2k

Hell it has 4k60, the next cheapest large sensor camera with 4k60 is like $6-7k

I understand you dont have a lot of money but that isnt relative, this camera is so cheap for what it is, so start savin those pennies.

The FS100 is still like 1k new and has no where near the same specs as a GH5, the FS700 you still need an external recorder or the added hard drive to shoot 4k, which that is in the 4k+ range.

DSLR's/mirrorless have their cons but the GH5 is a lot of camera for that price. Cinema cameras are to expensive, a huge hassle to lug around and why buy that when for a tenth of the price you can get so many other great cameras.

Oh come on. There's a reason people shoot movies on RED. There's a reason people don't shoot movies on fs7. Why do you think they don't make a PL mount for it? Because you're not gonna cash out on S4's and Ultra Primes to put them on a midrange Sony when F5's still look less cinematic than Blackmagics.

lowlight improved quite a bit, 3200 iso is clean and 6400 is usable especially with some denoiser

reference, they guy says the ISOs in the video, but 3200 is at like :31 then 6400 is after.

I was thinking about upgrading to a new camera this summer and the gh5 is making a great case.

Yes they shoot movies on RED's, ARRIS, Phantoms because they have the need for them and have the budget to buy them.

Again it all depends on what you are filming and how good the person behind the camera is. I'd rather spend a tenth the amount of money on a solid camera rather than 50K on just the body. Thats not including a monitor, REDs crazy ssd's and all the other needed accessories. If my client has the budget I would rent a RED in a heartbeat but if not and if they don't have the need for that much camera there are plenty of others I would use.

Yeah I'm very impressed at 3200, I'd be lucky to use 1600 on my GH4 good thing I have a speed booster.

HOLY GUACAMOLE

That is absolutely insane. Honestly, the highest ISO is usable with denoiser, that absolutely blew me away

Has anyone been following the rumor mill on the GH5s?

Potentially will be announced at CES on January 8th. The big feature will be great low light, as well as increased framerates (4k60 10bit, FHD 240fps).

There has been so much speculation on the 43rumors facebook page for GH5... looking forward to the announcement.

Haven't heard much, the only new feature you listed was fhd 240 and "better low light"

I read somewhere they may use sensor backlight illumintation. Also, the megapixels are apparently dropping from 20.3mp to 12. Someone said this has to do with the size of the megapixel being larger now, thus can take in more light... I'm pretty out of the loop on the heavy tech side of things. Someone also suggested it will use Sony's new STARVIS 10megapixel sensor for incredible low light performance.

Rumored spec list: (source: 43 rumours)

The camera records C4K (60p, 150Mbps, 4:2:2 10 bit Long GOP)

The camera records slow motion at 240fps (FHD).

Finally announced yesterday.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1382031-REG/panasonic_lumix_dc_gh5s_mirrorless_micro.html

I don't think anyone had anticipated the removal of the IBIS due to the new sensor in it, it's caused quite a stir amongst the gh5 fanboys haha.

I am now on the fence as to get a gh5 or gh5s. I often film in the outdoors and having clean low light is awesome (think 15 mins post sunset when basically all you can film clean with the gh4 is a campfire)... but the IBIS in the gh5 has proved quite handy when needing some fast handheld pickup shots during work shoots.

Anyone else considering upgrading either to the gh5 or from the gh5 to 5s?

I ready a pretty interesting post on DVX user that basically mapped out where the gh5s fits, and its definitely more directly at film makers who need better low light and don't need IBIS. While the gh5 is made for run and gun and people who need IBIS and AF, like a blogger.

TBH get the gh5 unless you really need fhd 240 or really need better low light. The lack of IBIS is a bummer but thats how all dslrs/mirrorless cameras used to be, so its not that big of a deal for skiing stuff IMO. but I will tell you the IBIS is very nice for hand held shots and TBD how it works with a glidecam (havent used it on a glidecam yet) but im assuming it will be better with the IBIS on.

Yeah that's the other thing- coming from a GH4 for 3+ years and never having IBIS OR any lenses with IOS (I mostly used nikon glass) I seemed to get by okay with shoulder rigs, tripods, and then more recently got a gimbal.

I haven't used the gh5 with IBIS on a steadicam yet, but have used it on a couple of gimbals. Typically the addition of IBIS has been great on a gimbal, but there have been a few situations where the ibis seems to try and 'correct' for a movement of the gimbal and it whacks out the footage.
