Panasonic GH2

So? I've used $100 lenses that are better than $1,200 lenses...price isn't an absolute indication of quality.

Both cameras have strengths and weaknesses. Optically, the Canon DSLRs are better because they have a larger sensor. But it's a double-edged sword, because a larger sensor means more moiré. The GH2 doesn't have a problem with moiré because there is less downsampling done from the sensor.

Also, take reviews with a grain of salt. What works for somebody else won't always work for you.

panasonic ag-hmc40 . is it good. im not a pro, im an amateur looking for something to shoot with and be able of doing a good quality edit.
i tried the hmc40 and was very happy with it. sells on ebay for 1700
is it worth the investment for a good DSLR that can film too??? will i really see the difference???
im a bit insecure about DSLR because i know you have to the right lens or else its not gonna be that good of a quality.
thanks guys again
(im french so i hope you can understand my writing ;P)

You could get a used hmc150 for around 1500-2000 maybe even an hvx200, which are both MUCH better than the hmc40.

id like to know where i can find a lense for $100 thats better than a $1200 lense because i need a good lense for my t2i but i am poor... i got the kit lense and it kinda sucks

There are too many to name...but the Pentax SMC 50mm 1.4 comes to mind. It slays any Canon L glass I've used; it's more on par with Zeiss glass.

Buying used isn't as hectic as it used to be, since most cameras are tapeless now, and you don't have to worry about the condition of fragile tape decks...I really can't see any reason not to opt for a used hmc150. It's a far better camera than the hmc40 and will cost you less than a new one.

I am in a very similar position to the OP as far as what cameras I am looking at and how much I have to spend. I will end up having just about 2 grand to spend initially on a body and glass, and also plan on investing in more glass and stabilization stuff in the future. I am looking for suggestions on what is a good body and lens(es) to start out with, and I figured I would bump this thread instead of making a new one.

I am open to the idea of either an HDSLR or a dedicated camcorder. The only thing is I will probably end up selling my current camcorder and my D60 to go towards this new purchase. I still want to be able to take good stills and timelapses, so I am leaning towards a DSLR because it is capable of doing it all. Plus I like the fact that they use SD cards, because I already have a couple 32GB class 10 cards.

I will be shooting a lot other than skiing, such as videos for my friends band, car videos, skating, and hopefully a short film that my friend and I plan on starting next summer.

To Landis: What makes you say the t2i is better than the 60D? From what I understand, the t2i's lacking of any sort of audio control or manual white balance, worse LCD screen, and overheating issues make the 60D a better choice. I don't have any experience with these cameras so I'm just curious as to what you would say makes the t2i a better body.

Simply put, its better because it's cheaper. With the 60D, you are paying more for features that aren't necessary (albeit nice).

A t2i with magic lantern is every bit as capable as a 60D, and you will have more money left over. If you get a t2i with good support versus a bare 60D with a couple lenses, the former setup will be much more helpful in obtaining good footage.

p.s. I have not once used manual white balance on my 7D; kelvins work perfectly fine.

i finally bought the T3i. 3 weeks later, i tried a GH2....... i wanted to kill myself. for videos the T3i is far behind the GH2. GH2 is on another level, seriously. videos quality is so much better, less noise in low light, etc... chek out reviews you will understand:

if you think you will almost always shoot videos with it, go for the GH2

Thanks, that all makes perfect sense.

I guess at this point its a matter of a magic lanterned t2i, hacked gh1, or shell out for a gh2.

Yeah i just finished reading reviews from Phillip Bloom and DP Review and I'm totally sold on it. Only problem now is finding somewhere that has it in stock...

The more I read about the GH2 the more I think I might buy it over an HMC150. One big thing for me since I shoot a lot of photos as well as video is looking through the damn electronic viewfinder, it looks so weird.

the 14-140 kit is backordered, but I bought mine with the 14-42 from the ebay page. They always seem to have them in stock, even when no one else does, and there is no mark up. they shipped fast and it was brand new arrived as described. If you are getting a gh2 i would really recommend purchasing one either here or their ebay page (its buy it now, not bid). The crop mode on it is really cool, and you can use virtually any lens, even c-mount lenses (look them up, definitely some potential with them). hope that helps
