Panasonic GH1 + 100mbit firmware hack

YO ns!

I just ordered the panasonic GH1 dslr. the body is only $400 and then I bought 2 lenses with it. Recently people have made hacks so they can increase the bitrate the camera shoots in for much better quality. here's a video someone shot with the 100mbit hack, pretty damn crisp if you ask me! Has anyone used this camera before or installed the hack? My media teacher from high school said for price, this is definitely the way to go and the hack isn't that hard to install. thoughts?

^ yes what lenses. lookin for a cheaper DSLR myslef if i could get one lense for a good price, this will difinately be my first choice... that second video is so sick
 
100mbps isn't exactly going to make it "crisper" just have more detail in the shot. Its still shooting 4:2:0 avchd, bumping it to 100mbps is pointless IMO. Now, if you were shooting dvcproHD or prores 422 (like an external recorder would) 100mbps would be legit, but it has nothing to do with how sharp the image is or how "crisp" it looks.
 
Not pointless at all. It turns the GH1 into an impressive little camera. It clears up some of the issues the stock GH1 had, makes a big difference.
 
T2i will shoot 75 mb/s as well with ML. One thing to keep in mind though, you must buy an SD card that will support those data rates if you plan on doing that. Keep that in mind.
 
Lpowell recently developed a hack for the newer gh1's. He was able to backlog the 1.32 version to the new gh1 model which is sick. not all hacks, but a few of them!
 
Ya I had seen that. I followed all of it for a little bit but stopped after a while. Most of that programming talk goes right over my head.
 
BOOM. camera arrived in vt, my dad sent a pic to me as ive been living alone up on the north shore of lake superior working all summer, my fam comes up soon so im stoked to test this thing out! my media teacher just got a gh1 as well so he's gonna make a step by step for me to install this new firmware... stoked!

Check out a few more of the Panasonic primes, they're pretty decent. The 20mm 1.7 and 14mm 2.8 both look tight. Also, if you ever wanna spend 900+ on a lens someday, the voligander 25mm f.95 is an amazing lens made for the m4/3 mount.
 
cool thanks for the info, unfortunately I don't know shit about lenses yet so I just got what was recommended to me. Hopefully at the end of the summer I'll have enough to live well in vancouver and I can drop some dough on some new glass!
 
You should have picked up an older nikon 50mm 1.4, just saying. does that 50mm even have aperture control? i pray to god you didnt get the G version.
 
few, at least its the D. I would see if you could return it though, im guessing you paid 100+ for it. You could pick up either a SMC pentax 50mm 1.4 or nikon 50mm 1.4 ais/nonai for less and it will be a much better lens, since the af of that lens you bought is pointless on the gh1.
 
I have never had a problem with my t2i overheating. Even in warm weather shooting at a fairly high data rate (not the highest the hack can go because I didnt have a card that could do that until recently).

How do you like the GH1 image quality? I dont think I have read many great reviews about it compared to the GH2.

It still uses an IPPP structure rather than a full IBP. I have heard that it does not a have a very efficient compression.

I guess I have just read that it is pretty inconsistant with its image quality.
 
I love the GH1!

I had the T2i overheat on me during a wedding ceremony and sold it the following day. Never will I chance it with a camera during a shoot that you can't redo.

Loving the Gh1 though. Love the quality. Especially with the hack. The amount of detail it shows is great!
 
aiight here's my first edit! literally filmed on day 1 with the cam so Im still pretty sketchy at using it, edited in the new final cut as well so its kinda weird and I have a bunch to fix, just wanted to get this out to show my cousins boss. lemme know what you think!

that's not true. but even without the hack im so stoked on the cam, 720p 60fps is still crisp as fuuuuck

For the future, if audio is going to be an important factor of your video, you should record it externally since hddslrs have terrible audio.
 
yeah thanks, im looking to get a shotgun mic or whatever. or would a lil wireless set be better? about $100 for a shotgun i think
