Check out the palmer glacier. Summer skiing not looking good for next year. Photo from Timberline Webcam

You're right its melting but you never know what kind of winter they will get. Your assuming 10 months before next summer, there's alot of time for pow

Pretty much the exact same thing happened in 2005, I think everything will be okay.

Palmer Glacier is a glacier on the south slopes of Mount Hood in the U.S. state of Oregon.[2] The glacier is situated at an elevation range of 9,300 to 6,200 feet (2,800 to 1,900 m), and was named for Joel Palmer, an Oregon pioneer. Palmer Glacier is the most well-known of the twelve glaciers on the mountain, and is a popular destination for snow sport enthusiasts. Some of the lower part is within the Timberline ski area, and can be accessed by Sno-Cat or chairlift, conditions permitting.

Pretty sure that's just Whistler... Unless I missed something.

Shit haha sorry for the mistake I guess that is just whistler but it wouldn't surprise me if Palmer would follow along

They'd need to go through a lot of red tape to do that because its a national forest...

That's more snow than the mountain the Beijing olympics will be on. China has the technology to cover the entire mountain in snow because its not worth it to host it in a place which gets natural snow.

glaciers are made up of ice and palmer is just a snowfield at high elevation.

lol

Yeah but the red tape for that is no different from anything they do. There is already snow-making lower down in the same forest. Just doesn't make any financial sense when there is no infrastructure to pump water up the mountain.

thanks for that, I would have had no idea that palmer was a glacier had you not linked this very Wikipedia article.

Wikipedia is not a very reliable source. The sources at the bottom that are listed are the reliable parts.

For some reason everyone turns a blind eye when the 2005 season is brought up.

my guess would be that that is because 2006 was such a banger. at least in the areas i paid attention to at the time. it'd be great if 2016 went hard and boosted everyone's morale :)

Here's a random tidbit:

The residence time of a water molecule in a snowfield is only 2 to 3 years on average but in a glacier it can be a few years up to hundreds of thousands of years.

my bad, got my facts mixed up but its still 400+ inches a year

But isn't it a deal where if a glacier completely melts then it has a hard time coming back?

Rumor on the block that the PNW is predicted to have a 120-130% winter for the 15/16 season. These predictions are usually quite accurate so there is a good chance we will be lapping the mile a hell of a lot longer than this year.

Ive heard quite the opposite but I am going to take your word for it because I want to believe.

Farmers almanac says a shit ton of snow this winter like it was on the east coast last year, but I think it's a bit early to predict yet

This is the exact attitude I took while discussing this with my buddy. If we all believe it will happen.

NOAA says the opposite and bases their opinions on science so I'm not too optimistic...

The truth is we won't know until it happens. Long term forecasting is literally people guessing based on previous years.

Okay lets just get the whole glacier thing clear, no its not technically a glacier. by definition a glacier is.

"a slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles"

A glacier is formed when the snow remains through the summer enough that when the next winter comes it creates another layer of snow and over hundreds of years it forms a glacier and then begins to move very slowly, very very slowly. Because Palmer never has enough years in a row where it doesn't get almost all the way melted it will probably never be a glacier so technically it is a snow field. The definition of that is.

"A permanent wide expanse of snow in mountainous or polar regions."

The only difference is that a glacier moves, Palmer, does not move, it is a snowfield. I love the place to death tho I grew up at timberline.

They can barley predict the weather 3 days in advance so the chances of an accurate Forecast past a week are pretty low.

Well I mean they compare ocean temperatures around the ocean and base it against historical data to create models its not like its based on nothing.

There is very limited snowmaking on Mt. Hood. And if you think it would be an easy fight to bring mass snowmaking to that mountain, then you are crazy. Friends of Mt. Hood would help keep that wrapped up in red tape for YEARS.

Not true... Palmer infact does move, very slighlty. If you have ever ventured away from the ski boundary, you can find crevasses which mean the GLACIER moves

The crevasses are result of the glacier that was there hundreds of thousand of years ago, Palmer is the reminisce and is no longer a glacier. Trust me dude I have studied up on this quite a lot.

Those crevasses being ice and all would have melted a long time ago if Palmer wasn't a glacier
