An effort by Pakistan's government to block its citizens from accessing YouTube yesterday caused an outage in the video-sharing website that affected most of the world.

Jordan Islamists torch Danish flag over cartoon

70 Pakistani internet providers were ordered to block YouTube access because it showed cartoons which were deemed offensive because of their depiction of the Islamic prophet Mohammad, as well as trailers for an upcoming Dutch film portraying Islam as as a religion that is prone to encourage violence against women and homosexuals, the Associated Press reported.

The block was meant to cover Pakistan alone, but Pakistan's clumsy implementation meant it affected two-thirds of world's internet population, particularly in Asia, where the Google-owned service was down for about two hours starting at about 8am Monday morning New Zealand time, AP reported.

There were no reports of users in New Zealand being affected.

Analysts blamed the outage on Pakistan Telecom, which sent domestic requests for YouTube data into oblivion, then published these routes to its international carrier, PCCW, one of the world's 20 largest data carriers. PCCW passed the route to other international carriers, who began directing their international YouTube requests to oblivion as well, AP reported.

Lol power to the peoples!

The problem has raised fears about the security and reliability of the global internet.

Pakistan isnt the only government to block websites from the citizens. I believe Chia did so and might still be, not too sure.

The US and Canada do it. Most just don't know it because there is no way of knowing it from within.

there's a really good youtube video that shows you how to make wmd's, but you can only see it through the Area 51 server.

i dont think germany has any power to block the spread of information about one of their bigger political parties who were just a few votes short of coming into power 2 years ago (national socialists). i believe you're confusing "pro nazi stuff" with what happened during the holocaust, and the german governments apprehension to approve teaching/remembering about it in school.

of course i could be wrong.

I wouldn't go that far. In America we have certain values, free speech

and press being two of them. Keep in mind that this is not the case

everywhere. Freedoms like that are not part of their culture. It was

probably not much different than our government banning child porn, much the dismay of parkerhouse.

Not sayin I agree with the buffoon who blocked youtube for a shitload of people. I'm just sayin they don't see it the way we do.

yeah, cuba blocks almost literally everything. you have to go to a certain website which only lets you go to sites approved by them. they monitor key strokes etc. that sucks huge cock.

The German government has had a ban on pro-Nazi material for a long time. You can't even get a copy of Mein Kampf without smuggling it in. That ban includes websites as well.

I remember seeing on ebay that anything WW2 that was related to the German campaign wasn't allowed to be sold to Germany and many previous Russian satellite countries.
