Painting SKis. . . .

I have the Public Enemys and i am getting tired of the graphic. . . . how would i go about painting them? and would it ruin the ski?

I have done it a bunch. It defininatly works best on publics. The steps for best results are:

1. sand it with a fine grit paper.

2. Clean it really well, make sure that you dont leave any cleaning soaps on it.

3. spray in a bunch of thin coats, and the best spraypaint to use is Krylon flat white. do like 5 or six thin coats, dotnn use more than you need.

4. for custom graphics, sharpies work the best. just keep it moving, because otherwise the sharpie ink will act like a solvent and absorb paint up into the sharpie, ruining it.

5. Use a thin coat of clear coat. not very much is needed, jsut make sure it is covered.

 
^sick - i wanna do that to my old concepts - do you think i'd have a problem with it cause the surface is so much glossier than that matted material on PEs and pistols?

It isnt the texture on the topsheet, becausee that is what the sanding takes care of. Spraypaint just binds easier to some things. I just registerd a photobucket so you can see what I have done.

 
That wanst very clear... the spraypaint just seems to bind to the plastic k2 uses better. I tried a pair of older 1080s and it didnt really work so well.

Those are the first ones I did. The ones in the middle are mine, the middle pair and the left pair broke at the end of this season

 
Also, I had those skulls painted the season before the chronics came out... great minds think alike maybe?

 
ya ive seen people take like color sharpies to the black and white PE's. it looked pretty sweet

the hard topsheet... and ya i guess its sorta the same.. im tlakin bout the 04 05 ones with the purple and blue gay reatrded graphics... i wnana paint them a solid color each..

sick ya i think ill draw up some sick designs to put on em and try it out... about how long does the whole process take? whouldn u let the paint dry before putting on the sealant at the end?

would it work if i cut paper to the same length and shape of the skis, make all of the designs on the paper, laminate it and glue it on with contact cement?

that was seriously the most simple way to show how u can paint skis, great link thanks, i might try it on my choppers but idk if i should cuz of the warranty

that is iffy. when your edges hit the topsheets, if even a little of the paper is exposed, water will soak into it. It will also be a lot heavier, where painting them really does almost nothing.

However, You can use pencil to pencil down the design before you sharpie it. you can erase pencil off of the flat white too. Just be gentle. Also, get the really skinny sharpies, and only use a second color of spraypaint if you have to, other colors dont flex with your ski like white does, and isn't as durable.

has anyone tried ppg paint. my dad has a really spray booth at his shop and he has pretty much everything neede for a nice job

if we had more people like ATLANTASKI the world would be a better place.

 
theres a place for custom paintjobs on paintball guns, there should be one for skis too, ^ maybe that guy could do it

that actually looks really siick but i personaly dont know why u would even paint your skis...if u do it u have to do it in like 10 steps to allot it to be done proper which includes sanding after every single coat except for the final clear coat to ensure proper bondage...

I would stay away from the base coat. the less you have on there the less likely it will crack.

 
^^ why paint your skis? think about it this way... skiing is a way to have fun and express yoruself, if your skis dont reflect you, why not make them? It really doesnt take that much work, and it is a lot of fun if you are into it.

I got everything collaged out or painted hah

yea, I did some goggles a while back. Also some stuff on my clothes. That pair broke, so I will have to be painting my new pair when they come. Maybe just one, so I can enjoy the graphics that were on them for a little while.
