Painting ski poles

i used the search bar and couldn't really find much, if there is already a thread i passed up just link me or something. but do you basically just sand them down, paint, and clear coat ?

i knew nothing about painting poles when i did mine haha i just bought purple spray paint at wallmart... 2 bucks, cleaned em real good and sprayed. They actually turned out siick! but theres some purple dots where i grab my skis, still gotta try and get that clean so use tape or something if you dont want something else to get painted.... its kinda obvious i was just lazy.

1) Sand down your poles. not super gritty sandpaper, just gritty enough to take off some of the old paint, and to texture the metal so the new paint sticks.

2) Spray your colors. if your taping, do your first color, several coats. then tape, then do your second color, several coats. let each coat fully dry before you do the next one. itll look alot better if you do a shitload of thin coats, rather than a couple thick gloppy ones.

3) After all those dry, get a can of clear spraypaint. Coat several times with that. Without it it will chip horribly. Even with the clear it does get beat up pretty fast, but whatever you can always paint em again.

alright thanks for the input, i have everything i need so i'll post pics of the finished product when i'm done.

one thing i do is duct tape my poles with colored duct tape and i make sick designs. Easier and it lasts better

mine turned out sick. then i beat the shit out of them all season and now they are in need of a paint again. lol ill prolly wait till the summer though

i painted one an it turned out super shitty so i didnt bother on the second one so now i go no poles

so remeber if you fuck your poles you can always just not use them

bahaha. just ran outside to paint mine, did basically everything your not suppose to do. then came back and saw this thread. not like i care if it comes off... there poles.

No matter what you do they WILL chip. Its inevitable.

I sanded, primed, painted and clearcoated my poles 2 seasons ago and after a week they were looking pretty rough.

This last season I put black duct tape on them and then used white insulation tape to create a spiral running down each pole.

The tape method is far more durable than paint, faster to apply, and for most designs looks just as good. If you want to do something fancy with spraypaint it may be possible to paint directly onto tape, I dunno. I'd imagine if you had a more clothy type tape it would stick better than a more plasticy type of tape.

These are my poles the first time I painted them. I haven't got pics of the version I did with tape.

has anyone ever used rustoleum paint when painting the poles ? i put my first coat on and after a day of drying i can scrape off the coat of paint with my finger nail, is that just how the first coat is until i get atleast another 2 coats on ? or did i used the wrong paint ? i think rustoleum may be for primarily metal when my pole is like carbon fiber or something along those lines.

just sand it down, and spray paint. you dont need any fancy clear coats, the paint wont really come off cause your poles dont hit shit all the time.

I started painting my ski poles... I am going to do the second primer coat in half an hour and then il be painting the base coat in neon pink and then puting masking tape for my designes and painting the rest glossy black and then topping that off with clear coats. so basicaly my poles will be black with neon pink designes...

Im also painting some skis ( 07/08 line invaders) Im painting them for a school project and then im going to trick them out for my pesonal use. Their going to be wood pattern plus a bunch of designes I will do later

make sure you let the paint dry fully before putting masking on it. if you don't its likely to pull some of the base coat off with it. most spray paints take a good day or two to cure fully.

fuck dude, a few years ago i just put tape around and spray painted with white, so there was a black pole with a white spiral going up it... yup, no fancy shit like you, took me about 10 minutes.

If you want to put a lasting finish on that don't use spray paint, use something acrylic like tremclad. Thin the paint out with mineral spirits. If you use this kind of paint you don't need to primer it because it's supposed to be painted right onto metal. Do a couple coats, wetsand, repeat untill shiny enough, and then if you want a real sick finish sand it down with really high grit sandpaper, 1000 or 1500, and buff that shit.

Someone posted this method on a car forum a while ago and I know multiple street racer kids who have put dank finishes on their ricers with this, almost up to factory standards. I myself did something reletively similar (slightly more effective but a lot more complicated and time consuming) to this to paint the fender on my old civic before I sold it and it came out really well. I figure if it works on cars then it would probably work on poles for sure, and likely last you more than a season.

better explaination of it is here

alright so here is basically the final product, i still need to put atleast 2 more layers of clear coat. If you cant tell the other color besides blue is yellow

my poles from last year until i snapped one in half. worked out though, i have pants the color of that bandana now, so it would have looked a little goofy with the poles
