Painting in adobe illustrator

Hi, I guess you've seen the contest with FD outwear. Okay, my question is how do i paint without touching edges. When I paint, it's not net and straight.. I made the patterns of the suit but i struggle to color it..
Any help is most welcome, thanks!

You need to look at the fill and stoke, you don't really paint thing is illustrator.

illustrator is meant for drawing vector art, and the "brush" in it just tries to match bezier curves with the strokes you make (in other words its a piss poor way to try and draw something). If you want to "paint" use the brush in photoshop, you'll get a lot more control out of it. As for keeping your design within the ski template, google search for a layer mask photoshop tutorial. Hopefully this points you in the right direction.

Yea this, illustrator is vector based and ps is bitmap based.
