I was skiin on the wrong run the other day and dropped a cliff to wall stomp ala cliff face. Now i have a gazillion scrathes and two core shots. does p-tex make em as good as new???????

If it stays you will be fine. If there are a lot you could get it done by a pro, it will cost around 40-70 depending on the damage but it will be like new. If its not to gouged to the core then you shouldnt worry too much.

if you do it right, laying down a ptex patch should fill in the gouges and you just have to worry about getting it really smooth and it'll be good as new...if you're not quite sure how to do it, just ask the ski techs at you local shop they're usually a pretty good source of info...

use a soldering iron to lay slivers of ptex in the holes, then a metal scraper to get it flat and a bbq brush to retexture.

im just gonna sling crystal meth so i dont have to get a real job and can afford to ski, with the way my senior year is goin though thats probably one of my few options

Put the P-tex in the hole in little layers and let dry, then repeat until the whole is completely filled. Then smooth that shit out. I found this holds a lot better then just dropping 1 giant layer of p-tex into the hole.

ahahahhhhhhhhhh,, please dont listen to these half wits,, if you have core shots and you drip ptex in them you will make them worse... I REPEAT WORSE,, ptex melts base material and will get under you bases and melt the adhesive,,, you need to have a base weld done where you cut out a piece of the base and use adhesive to put in a new piece,, it is the ONLY way to fix core shots

^ And what about all the scratches and chunks that aren't core shots?

if you cant see the core ptex the shit out of scratches,, once you ptex use a metal scraper to get the extra off,, skis usually need to be tuned if you are doing any significant ptex,,

so you know i do tune/repair at a shop and am not totally talking out of my ass

thats why you use a soldering iron dickface, you dont drip it in. you slice off a layer of ptex from a stick at a time with a flat blade soldering tip and lay them in the gouge meltey side down. I have fixed quite large gouges this way and never had a problem and it looks like new. if you start putting glue in there you're asking for trouble. I cant think of any glue that will hack the low temps and flexing of a ski. But go ahead, piss your money away let some tech do it.

its epoxy, not glue,, and it always holds,, you have to clamp it and let it sit overnight,, i have doat least 100 base welds and have never had one returned to me,, and its 1000x better long term than just ptex

if you had to fix a core shot in the middle of a ski,in a pinch, ptex MIGHT work,, but if its near an edge dont even try it,, if you ptex it and hit that spot again say good bye to your edge and your ski

buy some fill in and repair them or take it to a shop

221 your an idiot. Go get a job in a shop so some one can teach you how to ptex right. Okay fill in the scratches with normal ptex that you drip in. Keep the ptex clean and close to the ski so you don't get carbon build up in the ptex. It makes the ptex all crappy. Then do ptex welds Don't drip ptex in. Like that other guy said you will burn your core. I would have your shop do it since it is difficult. If you want to do it cut out the area around the core shots in a rectangular shape so that everthing is at right angles. Also undercut where you cut out because that will keep the new ptex from coming out. Them use a ptex gun to squirt in the new ptex. As soon as it is in put something over it and apply a lot of pressure to the ptex for about a minute. Then scrape away the exccess ptex with a file and a metal scraper. It is nice if you can to finish it off with a full tune up.

i melt milk jug into it. does the job fine.

I hope you're not serious...at any rate, base patches aren't that hard to do on your own. Definitely the way to go if you've got a nasty core shot, and pretty easy if the shot is right next to your edge.

pardon my ignorance, but what exactly are core shots?

'you should probably get bindings or it will be hard to stay on your skis...don't get gloves tho, gloves are out. just use a cigarette to keep your hands warm' -221

When all your base gets stripped away so as to expose the actual core of the ski. They're bad news, becuase once that happens, then water, etc, can get into your base and start to deteriorate the ski.

holy shit i didnt know that water on coreshots was a problem! i rode on em for a whole day with the shots still unfixed

just bring it to your shop that way if they fuck it up then they're responsible and i can guarantee they are gonna know the best way to do it...assuming it's not someplace dumb like sportmart or something but an actual ski/snowboard shop. we do ptex repairs every day at my shop and to know the right process to use you have to see it and decide how bad it is. then after it's done put it on the belter and get it nice and smoothe.
