so whats the deal with ptex and abs, 4frnt says they only use the most durable materials and they use p-tex side walls, armada to my knowlege used to use p-tex but sxitched to ABS side walls for added durability, am i missing something

Yeah I noticed that too that Armada switched to ABS. I saw the inerds of a K2 snowboard the other day with our rep and the ABS stuff is like a quarter inch thick. It's a lot thicker than I thought it was. Either way it seems like tough stuff and with enough of it I'm sure it does the trick no matter whcih material it is.

PTex by far are the most durable sidewall. ABS has always been the norm. because the technology comes from racing, and most race skis are bomber....for racing. The problem is an ABS sidewall gets subjected to different forces in freeskiing, and will likely crack or blow out on a huge landing.

PTex is just as strong, lighter, and will NEVER crack. Take a look at some snowboarding comapnies who've been doing it for years now.

The problem with PTex is it's more expensive to produce than a normal ABS sidewall, so alot of companies shy away from it. You need a specific flame treater to produce a PTex sidewall, where as an ABS you just slap it in.

Armada had problems last year because of the factory that was producing them in Quebec was crap, and was known for problems.

Their new production, ELAN, probably did not want to deal with PTex and all the equipment it requires, so to keep cost down they use ABS sidewalls.

Elan does have a great production facility, so Armada should do well, but as far as sidewalls go...P-Tex is the best option.

wow...next time i have a question about anything ill come to you

specific flame treating my ass for producing a p tex sidewall. i worked in a snowboard factory and the only flame treating we did on p tex sidewall was going over the sidewall and the edge of the core it was going to go on seperatley with a fucking blow torch then the sidewalls were stapled to the core and then it went into the cassette and all the other shit was put down fiberglass carbon etc adn was put in the press. no special specific flame treating whatsoever

aramada used p-tex but the super duper cool company that actually make those skis do not know how to use it porperly, so they wenmt to abs wich is the speciality of their ski makers

well they should figure out how to use it, it dont take a rocket scientist p tex is way more pliable and less brittle than abs

jizack, take a ski, a 4FRNT for instance, and notice how much thicker the sidewalls are than a snowboard. They require alot more PTex to make the sidewall strong. Regardless of the flame treatment, the process as a whole takes alot longer than normal ABS.

I'm in agreement with you, PTex is the shit, but alot of companies shy away from it because it takes longer and is more expensive.

dude it takes like 30 seconds to run the flame over teh shit. and as far as the skis being thicker dont mean shit. we had several different sidewall model snowboards all with different thickness of sidewall and either way it takes like 30 seconds trust me i ran that flame over thousands of sidewalls and cores

well say the whole flame treat take about a good 30 seconds you staple the p tex to the core from there you go to press you have your base with edges glued to it in the cassetter you put down your resin first piece of fiber glass any carbon if necessary put your core in with p tex side wall attached, more resin carbon if necessary another piece of fiber glass put your top sheet on, thrown on the top of the cassette that part of putting it together takes anywhere from 2-4 min depending on how good you are and you throw it in the press and cook for 15-17 min depending on your resin
