Over rated: RAILS

actually I didn't nut myself on a rail! I'm not bitter at all! I just skied in a foot and a half of powder and hit some cliffs and realized rails are worthless, like you guys who think they are the shit!

Rails aren't a part of progression, they belong in the same category of shit as snowblades!

The only problem with skiing is the lack of girls, atleast hot and horny ones! Want to go bowling?
 
rails very over rated. especially in movies, who the fuck cares about watching a bunch of jib monkeys grind rails, id rather see them do big mtn lines, huck cliffs, and backcountry booters. you need more balls to ski big mtn lines and huck cliffs then stupid jib monkeys and their newschool shit on rails

uhhh last time i checked i was on a newschool skiing site where we focus on newschool skiing, so in a newschool skiing comp there isnt usually cliffs, sorry children

i can't believe so many of you dudes are hating on rails. maybe you're on the wrong site. newschool skiing is all about rails.. the only reason i can think of why everyone would be hating is because you can't do them. greasing rails is one of the best feelings in skiing.

This is rediculous. Rails are a major part of skiing just as cliffs are. No newschool is not all about big moutain, or jibbing, or park. It's about mixing all of them. To say that you don't enjoy watching or doing rails is just your opinions, which is fine. But now your telling people to shut up who you asked for their opinion.

 
I just can't believe what I'm hearing rails are such a small and insignificant part of skiing. How can people be saying that they are the biggest part of newschool skiing. Go watch Sage's seg in highlife and you'll see wher newschool skiing is going. Back into the big mountains armed with a bag of tricks. Why do you think Fat twins are the hottest thing since sliced bread.

 
i would rather see people doing rails in a movie than backcountry. yah cliffs are fun but it the east where their isnt many it sucks. rails kick ass but they are hard and that is why i think alot of people dont like them. they dont have the paitence to work at it. when they see some crazy skier on a rail it looks easy and it is kinda hard

cliffs is going back to 1990 warren miller flicks where it was all backcountry. almost every time a backcountry part comes on i hit the good old skip button. backcountry is not newschool skiing. just because they are wearing camo and shit instead of tight pink doesn't make it newschool. rails kill it and it's all we have over in ontario.

Haha everyone keeps argueing wuth me I love it. I'm not going to change my opinion so just be quiet. I just don't see rials as skiing. They aren't even that important in the whole newschool thing either. The new newschool is taking tricks to the big mountain. Whadaya think of that.

 
i like rails.

on the other hand, i just wrecked my skis on a rail, and i dont think volkl will give me a new pair, because they were ruined on a rail.

now, when newschool skiing first started, it was all jumps, no rails. then, little by little, skiers started doing rails for fun. just a small, but growing fad, to follow up on snowboarders doing rails all over the place. but the problem is, companies can make major profits if they somehow make their products more versatile, and once skiers realized that they could do just what the pro skiers started doing in the videos and ads, they wanted to buy twintip skis that much more. skis could now go off jumps like before, but all of a sudden rails entered the equation as well.

where did railslides on skis get noticed? in advertisments, and movies, of course. which are all just total attempt to sell products, by the sponsors involved.

it was all just a marketing ploy, a really cool one none the less, by ski companies. they totally jumped on the bandwagon, im afraid.

so in conclusion, yea rails are fun, and a part of skiing, but only in moderation. dont kid yourselves, skis are truly meant to be sliding on snow, not to be grinded down ALL THE TIME on rails. dont be fooled by this huge marketing ploy and think that rails are as much a part of skiing as carving, cuz their not.

if you dont agree with me, ask your ski company, who puts out many ads and videos containing countless railslides, after you wreck your skis beyond repair.

Rails are cool, but they aren't everything. There's a little bit of this trend I see where all people care about is what kind of rail you can slide, which is bullshit. However, being well rounded and able to slide a rail in addition to skiing the whole mountain and hucking anything is fine by me.

 
I've noticed a funny trend going on here. Almost all of the people defendin rails are from the east coast places like CT which I didn't even know had aski resort. And those against rails are pretty much form this fine area we can the west. I feel sorry for all you east coasters. but not that sorry.

rails are for the summer and night time when you just have to do something with your skis on but there's nowhere to do actual skiing.

 
i LOVE rails, i don't know how you couldn't like the, unless you suck at them, in which case rails probably give you a lot of punishment, unlike the soft powder you like so much.

there's so much to do on rails, the progression will never stop.

PS-explain to me what is so much better about BC booters than park booters, besides that it hurts less when you fall?

isnt it really hard to compair rails to cliffs, i mean its totaly different skills, and different aspects of skiing, theres nothing wrong with doing something different, if every thing was rails it would get played out, and same thing with cliffs, you gotta live with some variation

Rails are awesome, especially if you live in minnesota. But now that we just got aver a foot of snow, its all good. I'll for sure to rails still, cause they are crazy. especcialy the long ones

i like hitting powder and cliffs way more than rails. but i live in ohio. so i can only do that once maybe twice a year when i go out west. rails and shitty jumps are all i have. yea what you ski is better. whoop-de-fucking-doo. I want to ski. if i didnt do rails, i wouldnt be skiing right now. its all i got, basically. and i can ski powder and do cliffs. i know how to ski. i just can do rails, too. and maybe people like doing rails more. who the hell are you to tell us what's skiing and what isn't? let people do what they want and leave them the fuck alone. god damn people suck.

i think it is pretty silly to compare these two aspects of skiing. it is obviously a personal preference. as far as railskiing in movies; that is also personal and there are plenty of different flicks for everyones liking. but the way i see it as, this is an obvious progrssion of skiing that can't be denied.

but the whole 'ski company sales conspiracy' is hilarious. if that was the case, than i think you could date that back to when skaters started moving out of the smooth bowls and onto the street scene in the 80's. was that a conspiracy by skate manufacturers to sell more decks?

i think railskiing allows skiers to get creative in ways never before possible, in places never skied before.

skiing is being taken in different directions by different athletes, no one is all going to agree on what they like to ride more, or what is cooler. let it be.

 
this whole debate is part of the reason why the major 'newschool' ski mags will rairly, if ever, publish jib photos on a cover.

that doesn't mean its not still skiing though,

or that its has less 'soul'

switchin skiings everything we all do, its groomers, bc, and park, i've skied alta, and solitude (better than alta now), but i also love rails, just cause you suck balls at rails doesn't mean you should say they're not part of our sport, your saying a 630 onto a rail isn't progressive, but Jamie Pierre hip checking another 100 footer is, every part of skiing is good and if your hating its cause you suck at it
