Hey,So I know alot of you guys are on different forums and stuff for video and photography. Any tips on what I should look at? just trying to learn some new stuff.

Thanks

I am a member on:

Fredmiranda -- GREAT source of info and lots of great contributors

Photography-on-the.net (POTN) -- Canon EOS system based, no nikon and m43 junk here!

DVXuser -- Video based, great resource for any sorts of video related stuff

REDuser -- For the real big budget guns, lots of big ticket items and projects discussed here

Skateperception -- not the best source of info, but some good stuff hidden around there

Canon Rumors Forums -- Good info on gear and predictions for new stuff

Funny you say that, since half the forums in your previous comment are mostly noobs, with the exception being snobbish REDuser fanboys and DVXuser.

Skateperception and C5D are the worst two, Canon Rumors is border (haven't explored it much)

Would definitely argue that FM and POTN are pretty professional

Fred Miranda seems pretty good. POTN seems like mostly retirees and gear whores, but then again, what forum isn't full of gear whores?

There are many working professionals on POTN (such as Rolling Stone photographers and whatnot) which is pretty chill, but most of the people on the forums are pretty lame.

froknowsphotos.com is pretty good as well, LOTS of noobs though. it really depends on what kind of photo you're into. let us know what ur into and i may be able to help!

Just FYI that was the site that I bought my broken pentax 6x7 off of, thank god for paypal. It's okay, some good tutorials on flash, nice work on there, but overall it's just sketch, no real moderation. I'd recommend not buying on there, most of the gear is in bad condition, skate photogs are so hard on equipment.

I really like the vibe over at apug.com. Lots of cool stuff like people building large format cameras from scratch.

Am I the only one who doesn't hate Ken Rockwell? Sure he's hyperbolic and writes in jest some of the time, but to be honest I think most of his opinions are on point and people just hate on him because they don't like being told they didn't need to buy $5k worth of camera gear to take good photos.

I'm 'eventually' gonna get around to building my own 4x5 pinhole, wood and legos are both options for materials. Large format HP5 is pretty reasonable.

He says plenty of things I don't agree with, but has a TON of great information besides that. I've never understood the hate. I've always liked his site and used it as a resource when purchasing gear.

Yeah, I also disagree with many of his sentiments. But unlike just about every other site he focuses on the philosophy of photography and puts his opinions into context of the entire photographic experience rather than just balking about which gear is better. I also think much of his hate comes from his nuanced points, and we all know the internet don't take kindly to those.

I guess a lot of the hate originates from the fact that Rockwell's photos are terrible.

Other than that he seems like a very smart guy that is very opinionated but knows a lot about technology. A lot of his writings are very contradictory, though. Nevertheless his site is a great source of information on various Nikon lenses.

I feel people are too sensitive about this. The moment they see one inconsistency they throw their arms up and claim "contradiction!" and de-authoritize their words (this happens everywhere). The truth is, contradictions exist in reality because nothing is black and white. That's what nuanced points are all about - treading into that dangerous territory regarding non-matter-of-fact subjects, and the reason the internet doesn't like nuance is because it's less work to assign an opinion to black or white, or outright dismiss them entirely. If it made sense it'd be called fiction.

Not really saying this to defend Rockwell or attack you, I just think that as a society it's incredibly dangerous to operate this way.

Skateperception as mentioned above is pretty tight. Some members are noobs but some are actually fairly knowledgable on how to make good videos. The only reason people say they're noobs is because they shoot videos faaar different from ns' ideal video.

Also, not really a forum but I like to poke around yobeat/transworld/berrics every once in a while for a little inspiration.

POTN is actually the worst, though I'm on there more than on FM. Really dislike the layout of FM.

The thing I like of POTN are that it's active and the sample images threads.

Other fora I'm on:

MFlenses.com

Rangefinderforum.com

fm has the best buy/sell layout i think

no other gripes about the layout

i agree with potn being kind of lame though
