OSU, Bend, Bachlor

Thinking about going to OSU Bend. Is the town nice, how’s the school, and how bachelor? Any info helps. Thanks

(Also thinking about Alaska Anchorage and Alyeska)

Loved in Bend the last 4 years. Also worked at Bachelor for all 4 winters.

Don’t know much about OSU cascades. Just expanded the campus with a bunch of new buildings. Seems like a decent school.

Bachelor, usually a good park if the park lift is working(broken all of the season). Mostly beginner terrain. No real steep runs. Long lift lines. Anything you wanna know?

yo i go to osu cascades this my third. the skiing is dope. the people are weird u just gotta find ur crowd. The school is good but super small. I'm a computer science major so I spend a lot of time doing homework. Not a party school if that's what u want

How’s the skiing. From Colorado so used to some steep and tough terrain, how is the summit?

summits sick the skiing is sick the pow is sick. granted I'm from santa cruz and only ever was able to ski bear valley and tahoe on occasion so the snow here is definitely crazy to me and we have long seasons. Probably even longer than colorado but I'm not sure I've skiing once in colorado in copper and honestly wasn't super impressed with the mountain. Bachelor is super flat but super fun. The BC around here is also crazy good and you can actually get steep lines like broken top. I would claim squaw valley as my home mountain so I'm also a big mountain skiier but you can still have fun with the not steep lines and no rocks pretty much. If that's a deal breaker probably don't come here cause there's not a whole lot of actual big mountain a bachy. The only thing I would consider big mountain about bachelor is the cornice drop.

How long are the lines? Colorado is horrible so hopefully it’s better

Yeah crested butte is my home mountain and it’s steep and cliffs kinda want something new

Don't know much about OSU, but Bend is a really cool town. Tons of outdoorsy things to do all year round. It's getting pricier, but the community is pretty tight. They have a Blockbuster so that's a big win. One of the best craft beer cities if you're into that. If/when I move out of Reno, I'll probably move to Bend.

Bachelor is a fun mountain. I'm not a local, but I made two trips up there this winter. Not sure where you ski in CO, but it's not as steep and techy as a mountain like A-Basin. The snow is wet and heavy, but it makes for good coverage and a long season. In my experience, crowds aren't bad compared to other Epic/Ikon mountains on the West Coast.

Backcountry is mostly volcano skiing. Lots of long flat approaches for the bigger objectives.

I’m a junior in high school in bend. I’ve grown skiing Bachelor and love it. Fun wind lips and pretty good snow. Park is usually pretty good especially when sky is open but even with it down it was still fun. Bend is a dope town and there’s fun stuff to do all year. The hiking and mtb are dope. If I hadn’t grown up in bend my whole life I would definitely consider it as a college.

Recommend you also consider a community college OP. Seems like there is more aid than ever before and the local CC here just got rated the best college or university in the state with the highest average income for new grads. Keep talking to people that are basically getting full rides to community college and they have them near every mountain including Bachelor. If you go to OSU they have dual enrollment programs where you can take classes at Oregon Community College's in the same term to save money on some of your core classes. It can make a lot of sense to just bang out an Oregon 2 year transfer degree (AAOT) first and then transfer to OSU as a junior though https://osucascades.edu/admissions/apply-now/transfer-students/transfer-degrees#:~:text=Completion%20of%20an%20AAOT%20degree,than%20completing%20the%20full%20AAOT.

Will be better lines than most of CO. Summit has the only actual steep terrain with the cornice or rock garden being the only tech sections on the mtn. Also not open that often.

Spent my last 3 years of college at OSU: Cascades and it's a lovely place.

Due to the size of the campus and "lack" of professors, you'll have the same professors for a few classes which is super cool as you can develop a relationship with them (your intro to biology professor will also be teaching you cellular biology in 2 years, pretty cool!). With a small campus comes unique scheduling though. Not many professors, so not many opportunities to offer classes! Sometimes I would have an 8:00am, and nothing for the rest of the day until 5:00pm... but it's rare to have a term where you have class 5 days a week, I was at 15+ credits each term and usually had class 3 days a week.

I am not a OSU cascades student, I go to COCC in bend but I’ve heard mixed things about cascades from friends. It’s kinda just a new school still in development and seems like they don’t have all the kinks worked out. I think it is pretty program/major dependent if that department has their shit together or not. Bachy is mad fun though, pretty unique mountain, flat down bellow but off the top of the mountain it’s good terrain. Park is damm good too as long Skyliner is functional

You hit the nail on the head, I'm an Natural resources Student at Cascades, and it's pretty good, but some of the smaller programs definitely seem to not have enough resources. Guess it depends on what OP wants to study.

I lived in Bend form 2017-2021. I really liked living there, but not for the skiing. Fun town with a good vibe and good beer and food. Spendy compared to the rest of central Oregon, but not really spendy compared to other college towns. Biking is killer, river is fun, and if you want to rock climb it has multiple sick gyms and is less than half an hour from Smith Rock, which is epic world class climbing. Bachelor is sorta meh as the only really fun terrain is only accessible from the Summit lift, which is often closed due to high winds and other issues. The park might be one of the best in the US though. Seriously, they kill it and if park is your primary jam you will not complain. When I would ride there I spent 85% of my time in the park. The backcountry options are really limited unless you have a snowmobile as all the mountains are volcanic and very far from roads usually. The school is new and that often times could lead to problems, but if you are just asking about the lifestyle then yeah, it would be a sick place to go to school.

Hope that helps man!

Thanks for the help. I like big mountain but I guess I could just get good at park

I’d say crested butte is my home mountain, sounds like two totally opposite mountains

Why did you leave? Was it purely due to the skiing being sub-par compared to other states? Just curious.

To answer the point about sub par skiing, I don’t think bachelor is sub par whatsoever. The tree skiing is amazing, the above tree line is lit and the parks are Woodward so they are always firing. I think it’s more so the fact that there’s not much else besides bachelor near by. Hood is like 1.5 hours away, don’t know how the mid season skiing is there but ya besides bachelor. There’s not really any ski resorts nearby

No, I did not leave because the skiing was subpar. But, coming from living in Tahoe prior, it was a massive step down in terms of rowdy, steep terrain. I will say that as a more of a big mountain skier being forced to ride Bachelor did make me lose some passion for skiing. However, I left Bend because I started a business back in Tahoe and it has been a welcome change. But, this being said, Bend is still a fun place to live. I would never recommend anyone move there just for the skiing unless they still ride mostly park or are an intermediate skier. There are plenty of folks who love Bachelor, but they tend to not be the strongest skiers.

If I come to bend I’m totally going to be the best skier on the mountain

Do you know of any good colleges near Tahoe?

Define good.

You should definitely check out UNR (University of Nevada at Reno) honestly Reno and Bend are pretty comparable in many regards.
