Origin of "Gaper"

This question came up on a chairlift yesterday. I have always thought that the term "gaper" came from the fact that these beginner skiers frequently end up in places where the terrain is well over their ability level (steep lines, large terrain parks), and because of that sit in the middle of the line gaping (from the verb "to gape") at the terrain around them. Some of my friends thought that the term came from the traditional gaper gap between the goggles and hat/helmet of these skiers, in which case it should be pronounced gap-er rather than gape-er. What do you guys think?

well, a gaper refers to a female who does so much anal that she has a gaping butthole, therefore she is refered to as a gaper. maybe the ''gapers'' on the mountain are so gay that they hav gaping buttholes

I always thought it was just short for "Gay Person." Gay-per. Gaper.

But I like some of those acronyms better, Imma start using them

this is definitely the origin on the west coast, The term gaper comes from the gaping partition between a beginners goggles and helmet

That might be the dumbest thing i've heard all day. Good job for wasting my time making me read this, and making me have to reply to what you are saying because it made me so damn ferocious.Good day sir... Good day.
