Options on Tahoe Parks so far this season?

Just curious what everyone thinks about the state of parks around Tahoe so far this winter. I know Alpine and Boreal are trying our very hardests to stoke out everyone with what little snow we have. So what do you think so far? How are we doing? How are the rest doing? Nstar? Sierra? Squaw?

Please be honest because your opinions do matter...trash talk and rants don't help us help you!

Thanks

Eric

PS-it wouldn't hurt for you guys to stop by www.jibassicpark.com and fill out a park survey for Boreal and Alpine. The link is at the top of the page. No one has sent in a survey yet this month the odds are good to win the monthly raffle.

I know alpine is killing it with the jump scene. def the biggest hit in tahoe right now, Breal is ahead in jibs even, ahead of Nstar which is notoriously jib heavy. Everyone thats gone to Squaw said the only thing really up is the staircase. So Alpine for jibs and a jump. Breal for jibs.

alpine's setup is really sweet, and boreals jibs are pretty fun.  i think i'm going to ski northstar tomorrow and see what's up over there.

Heavenly had like 6 jibs up for opening weekend, not much but still fun. It looks like they're trying to step it up this year though. Putting more and more up each day. I'll let you know on N* this week.

N* added snow making to the park run this year so the snow if really good in the park and they have a good small jump and they are trying to add boxes and rails so I am having fun but I haven't gone anywhere else yet.

boreal definately has the lead on jibs and quality/maintenence of them. would be cool if the staircases were connected.

Alpines jump is cool and the lift tower is a blast, but the boxes and flat rail are super sticky.

Northstar has some fun stuff set up, including a jump and jibs. i think that their park is the most fun right now because it is the longest and has a variety of quality features.

allright, I posted this in the other thread of the same name in the ski gabber, so I wiill re post it here...

boreal owns right now, everything there is maintained, which is totally radtastic!!!

I was at N* yesterday, and there set up was as follows:

battleship

flat bar rail

down rail

down box

roller/"jump"

flat box

down flat down box

massive slightly down box - insanely fun

jump, kinda like 20-25 feet

hip

flat box

two c boxes

log stall/jib/grind

the set up is fun, not well maintained, rutted out, icy etc... has some real grooming issues associated with a high volume of people on a single run...

every place i've been to is fun. Alpine is wicked fun. Good times at Boreal and Northstar too, but a little too crowded on the days i've been there. Is it true that Alpine is going to expand the park? On their trail map, it has those little orange circle things all of the way down from the top, so I would like to think it is true. If their early season park is this fun, I can't wait for the actual winter to hit! i've also seen some pictures of Kingvale off I-80. That place looks fun too. It looks like they have a bunch of funky, junkyard-type jibs. Any word on that place??

yea alpine has been super fun, i also noticed that the boxes and flat rail are alittle on the sticky side. other then that though, everything seems to be well groomed.

I agree with Andy, the jibs seem to be a little on the sticky side at alpine. Also the jibs are super easy to get onto, i'm not complaining too much since its the beginning of the season...but that first flat box that shouldn't be a box that can be ridden onto. Also, that lift tower section could be pulled out of the ground a little bit higher. Besides that keep up the good work.

yeah for b real.

the only complaint that I have is that the lips aren't wide enough on most features. Like I was trying to spin onto the s-box and could not cause it wasn't wides enough.

Also, on the stair case setup, it should have a super wide lip so that you can get on form either side of both features. Right now you pretty much only have one option, especially if you want to spin on. One other thing that I noticed, the staircase is a lot steeper than most other stair sets. Idk how many other people have that problem, but i think it would be so much sicker if it wasn't as steep...

The one stair set with the d/f/d has a 20deg kink so it always needs to be that step so the flat doesn't go uphill.

The other stair set can be mellowed(because it doesn't have kinks) and we will mellow it out when it moves after the contest this saturday.

We hear you about the narrow takeoffs. We have been trying something different with the challanging snow conditions to maintain the quality of the lips and as a result they have gotten narrower over time. Everything is getting moved or rebuilt this week so they will be wider again...same goes for the staircases.

thanks for the input

Eric

is there any way that the staicases could be put together? it wouldn't be that bad either if the flat on the dfd was a little up. cause it is a little too steep. the wallride is super fun though. the long ass down rail is a little sticky too. i'm not complainin at all, just lettin you know my opinion on what could be improved. thanks.

northstar was actually more fun today than i thought it would be.  it was my first day there this year.  the setup was fun and they packed a shit ton of features into their one park run.  also, the storm got stalled over donner today i guess, cuz over at n* it was just misty with some sun shining through.

only like it was for the contest this fall. They can go double wide with a third set of stairs but not end to end. The plan is to set them as a double line over on 49ner when there is enough snow.

Also think we are moving the "long ass down rail"(as you put it) tomorrow night before all the new wet snow freezes going into the weekend. We have thought about buffing the slide surface but decided against it because most likely it would expose some raw metal and create rust which would make it stickier. It just got a little too thick a coat of paint this summer and it hasn't totally riden off yet.

hey stinky poodangle. dfds are called dfd for a reason, because they arent down up downs. i think those should be made illegal. umm i like the thinking with setting them up in a line that would be legit. and heres what im thinking. i just want one really good solid table (not stepdown at all) on a flat part of the mountain like the bottom of the hill eventually, i know theres not enough snow right now. aight im out

Kingvale will be sick inna few weeks and they will be open to the public mon-thurs, season passes will be on sale soon...

The owners/riders had a meeting on Sunday, I'll update as soon as I hear something else...

If it ever gets cold and it ever snows we have the perfect spot for one on 49ner. the plan is for a 50-60ft double line on 49ner gulley(the run that last year we just groomed heading toward the water tank). The first jump will be step down because of the pitch in the gully and the second will be table "style" as the run hits the flat section. I say "style" only becasue tru tables need to monstrously tall to have a decent landing so we might cheat a little and have it start just a tinny bit up the pitch of the run so we can stretch the landing as much as possible.

If I have time tomorrow I'll post a cool scale map we've been working on that shows what our hopefully final buildout will be when the snow finally gets here. If not tomorrow, I'll do my best to get it posted sometime this weekend.

Nice dude.

Cheers to Jonahs and Eric for being the only park managers in the area constantly keeping us up on things, really makes you guys stand out.

And that's why they do it, it's smart business that fosters a sense of community and builds relationships with customers (all of us). It seems a couple other resorts are beginning to understand this now too, with their online presence.

I agree on having a table (NOT step-down). With Alpine's new park location, there has to be a spot where a true table could be built along with the step-downs. I realize Kang and Nick's is continuously steep and would require too much snow, however, the other slopes have some variation in terrain.

With the pitch changes and natural breakovers on terry's and red green, our jumps and rails will be so much better. All the rail takeoffs won't be in a pinch, and the jumps won't just be stepdowns with massive flat decks.

I'm hoping that we can get a mile long run of 7 jumps, all with some variations to keep things interesting. Hip/tables, true tables, Step-ups, and step downs. Rails on mounds instead of on a flat deck.

Kingvale will have some jumps too, its a much bigger area than you think...

I'm not sure whether the jumps will be low enough on the hill to be accessed by the rope tow, so they may not be open to the public...

Stay Tuned

better late than never...I finally had time to post the map I teased you guys/gals with awhile ago.

http://www.jibassicpark.com/map/

This map is our basic game plan for all the different park areas/lines at Boreal. It doesn't show where each "exact" jib or each "exact" type of jump will go rather just where and what size features you would expect in each line. This map represents about 75% of our total features we plan to place this winter and accounts for all major features(our entire jib inventory and jump lines). The remaining 25% of features are things like rollers/banks and natural terrain features with some help from us like tree/rock jibs etc and out of the way features that don't neccessarily fit in our main lines and/or maybe are not top priority.

Hope it helps you guys/gals understand a little better of what and where we're expanding in the near future.

wow that looks really sick.  lots more jumps, and i could see myself just sessioning for hours and hours on all those rail lines.

I agree with lenzner on this one. By providing a true tabletop style jump, the possibilities, if I may be so bold as to say so myself, are endless. This will provide a different aspect of park that far too many resorts in the Tahoe area are lacking. After having the opportunity to ride Breckenridge's park, I feel that this style of feature would be a valuable asset to AM, as it provides substancial pop, flow, and fun, especially when combined with other tabletop style hits in a row.

since boreals got that june mountain vibe. it would be dope if they set up flat bars w/o any jumps like june does.

ask and ye shall receive. we want to expand into the 49ner area in the coming days but there still isn't much snow over there. we could take several of our "micro" rails (1ft high and 20ft long) and just plant them without takeoffs, total ollie style. Is that what you mean? I haven't been back to June since I moved up here to see what Cooper has done with the good old JM2, so I'm not quite sure if I've got the right picture in my head from your description.

If we are throwing flat bar ideas out there lets see a big one on one of your jump piles.....I dont get why parks dont have more jib options on those piles of snow which = great landings.

I heart long flat bars you can cook into and land deep.

Breck has a table now? I lived at breck for a year and they never had tables before.

yah total ollie style. i remember rydn june like 3 or 4 years ago and that double chair that you have to take to leave the park at the end of the day or you ski past at the beginning. when your skiing to the main quad park chair had like 5 or 6 flat bars w/o any jump. it would be dope to see a whole gang of them on 49wer. but boxes also and dwn rails . a whole run of ollie features.

oh..the Bunker hill micro park! yeah, thats when we first started making those micro jibs. Those were sick, we had flat down, down flat down, house and flats all 1ft high. However, I never set them up total ollie on style, so you must have visited June 3 years ago, the year after I moved here. I last heard that Cooper now sets up all that stuff on Mambo, the run that goes to the right of the superpipe and thats its a complete blast!

Sugar Bowl isn't doing too bad. They've got a little dfd rail, a little battleship rail, a couple boxes, and a 15 foot gap to down rail. They also have about a 30 footer and a 35 footer, the parks better than it ever was last year allready. The only problem is that the park is the only groomed run on the lift it's on, so every gaper on the hill is funneled through the park. Sketchy.

what are south lake options like?

sierra is cheap, i am poor, and my grandparents live in south lake, so thats usually where i am at (and without many transportation options)

is sierra any good this year? or is heavenly worth the extra money?
