Opening dates

its because its a series of pictures taken at a set time put together, not one giant video.

Just wrapped up a day of shred in Squamish, so much snow! And it def looks like they're hinting at an opening on the twitter-nasty. Time to quit the weekend job I think.

sooooooo ready fuck. anyone in the city ever hike something preseason? whats worth the trek if im at ubc? i got some friends with vehicles. are the local mountains decent to hike in a week? i really know nothing about them, how high, where the early snow makes it, time etc.

but im so d to hike for some turns

last year preseason at seymour started a little bit before remembrance day, with a corry p, and a couple of little kickers I guess. There was definitely enough snow to work with, and to hike for turns. I have a feeling the snow won't come as early this year though, but I'm hoping.

I usually do a preseason trip or two to Diamond Head out of Squamish. There are a couple nice pow runs and little pillows and cliffs out there, and it's pretty high elevation so as long as whistler has snow at the roundhouse, there's gonna be snow there too. Most of it is relatively flat though. There's a lodge that you can warm up and eat lunch in too.
It's a full day trip though, because to actually get to anywhere skiable is a 2 hour hike/skin up if I remember right. Nothing better than a day in the mountains before resorts are open. And you can ski the whole way down to the parking lot usually too, so you get a 45 minute run slashing pow turns beside the trail (it's a logging road until the hut).

With the freezing levels so high the last day or two things aren't looking as great as they were, but that said they're set to drop back down later in the week.

My money is on an early opening for November 20th.. But who knows.

You and me both man.

But looking at the historic openings, they always do their early openings on a Saturday.

The 13th is totally possible, but I'm just trying to be a little more conservative so I don't wind up disappointed. :(

I am hearing rumours of the 13th, but it's not looking good up there right now, 0 degrees at Glacier top station with water droplets on the camera lens :(. Supposed to cool off and snow a bunch in the coming week though.

This is the kicker. They should be getting and making snow all week, I see it as a possibility. That would be the best end of reading break. Ever.
If not, backcountry will be decent this week too.

guys think there is a chance for an early opening this weekend with dropped temps for snowmaking or the bit of snow we got this weekend?

there was a rumor going around ubc pool last night that it might open on thursday but dint quote me....i kinda doubt it

There were rumors of a 13th opening but they don't appear to be getting as much snow as originally thought. The mid-mountain base is somewhere around 40cm and they only expect another 10-15cm by the weekend. That's really not a lot of snow.

It looks real nice on the webcams, but there's barely any depth to it.

I'm still thinking it's going to be the 20th.

They need 4 days advanced notice to open right? Ain't happening this weekend. Freezing levels forecast to jump to 3400M (!!) on Sunday and sunny, hopefully that is wrong or it could be the 25th after all.

Whoa I don't know where you got that number from. I was scoping the weather forecast on the Whistler site this morning and the freezing levels are staying pretty constant around ~1200.

Ugh... not liking the 2000m freezing level on sunday. Hope that's the last warm wave before some major winter kicks in.

I found this picture of Seymour on NSMB takin by someone recently

I just recieved a 'welcome to whistler' staff email that says

"I hope to see you all in line on the 19th for the opening, just be safe up there and have fun getting your legs back. Yea SNOW!!!"

.......................................... So i'm leaping to conclusions and saying whistler opening day is the 19th! So stoked !!!! That's like a week away!!

Well I'll be reviving the Sea to Sky rides thread probably..

Driving from North Vancouver to Whistler Friday morning..God it's awesome to say that.

haha i'm going to presentation 1 with my skis, noon to probably about 4, then we're all going to grouse for the night. FUCK. YEA.

Yeah I was going to say.. We're talking about Whistler here. The locals are still going to be a fair way off from opening.

i dont know, grouse statistically likes pulling stunts like opening before whistler without enough snow

last year was super early for the locals but ended up shitty midseason and then amazing at the end of the season.. el nino year?
I'm conservatively guessing at this rate it's going to be the last weekend of november for seymour, maybe a weekend earlier for cypress and grouse.
has anyone heard anything about baker? what is open within a days drive right now?

i say all locals open same weekend. there all getting snow right now too jeeeee.

and baker will open when they have 24 - 36 inchs it says, so im guessing around same as the locals.

sometime end November, or real early December.

could be. I remember 2006 and maybe 2007 cypress opened first, because I went to cypress with my coworkers since otherwise we would have no reason to go to cypres.s. they have snowmaking too

we could be getting snow in Vancouver on Friday according to the weather network up to 1 cm but thats in a while so it will probably change

hey man, I would ski grouse too right now, because I'm that desperate and that lazy. just saying.
