Online College, Your experience

Hey guys,

So I am currently accepted and will soon be signing up for classes via the CSU global campus, I am excited for the flexibility, ski more live wherever. But was wondering what other peoples experiences have been.

I see a lot of posts about it online, but I am never sure who to believe or hold weight in different things.

So anyone on here ever done online schooling?

I've taken a number of online classes through my universities. They have been fine. Online classes should not be confused with online colleges. The majority of online, for-profit universities are a black eye on university-level education. University of Phoenix or the vast number of other online-only, for-profit colleges are simply degree mills. Pay your buck, get your degree, then collect your unemployment because no one should ever respect a degree from one of those institutions.

Very recently a huge number of for-profit online universities filed bankruptcy and shuttered their virtual doors. One-fifth of all student debt in the US is from these online colleges. Recently students have been successful in suing these closed colleges for their debt, saying their degrees are worthless. Even if they get their money back, they still wasted years of their lives that could have been in pursuit of a real degree from a real university.

As an employer, I would be highly unlikely to hire someone with an online-only degree.

It isnt a for-profit college, its through CSU and is labeled as a Colorado State University degree. I have a lot of real world experience in the field, I currently work as a marketing major. I would just like a diploma to go along with it.

Do you think that would be something that keeps me from getting employed in the future?

Are there due dates for your work? If so good. If not, absolutely do not put off the work. Thats what usually fucks people up with online classes

Due dates always fall on Thursday and Sunday evenings. I am pretty good about managing that sort of thing as well.

Yes, I did see that. It is significantly better than a for-profit school and has legitimacy. My guess is that you will be fine.

I've taken online classes last year and am continuing to take them this year and I love them.

Some people work better during certain times of the day. So if you're more focused in the morning you can do your school work then and schedule other things for the afternoon/evening. I liked this because the normal classes of the same course were scheduled at night but I work best in the morning. So it worked out better for me to do it on my own time.

I like it better when I'm teaching myself and have to figure things out for myself. Online classes are nice because you can usually watch lectures/ go over material as much as you need to. But with normal classes sitting through a lecture once and only having one opportunity to take in information wasn't as helpful for me. It's different from person to person and it depends on the course though.

The one online class I was in had online exams. So basically you were allowed to use notes and other materials to help. This has its advantages if you're organized and prepared but It has its cons too. You could argue that a professor could make it more difficult because of the circumstances or sometimes assignments are timed which could suck if you aren't organized. Again it depends on the person.

The only part that fucked with me was I didn't feel like I was doing school work so sometimes I wasn't motivated. I stopped doing work in my dorm and went to the library and got more done. Picking one spot designated for online work helped a ton and I would definitely recommend that.

Overall though I thought I did better in my online classes. As long as you keep up and don't procrastinate it shouldn't be any more difficult than a normal class.

This. Also be sure to interact with your instructor. In class instructors will often give a lot of tips and help off hand that they might not formally post up for an online class. It's worth it just to check in and ask questions even if it not required just in case the instructor might respond with an extra tip. Also interacting with the teacher might make them give you the benefit of the doubt if they are on the fence about what grade to give you or about giving you an extension etc.

I signed up for two online classes at MSU and ended up hating both and dropping one of them because it was so ridiculously stupid. Worst grade I have ever got was in the other. They made us do group projects in person, which totally defeats the purpose of online class imo. They made us post a mini-essay every week on this online forum deal with other students in the "class" about the dumbest subjects, and reply to two other peoples posts each week. These posts and comments made up a huge portion of the grade. The topic of the post made it such that all your comments on other peoples posts could really be was "I agree" or "I don't agree" but stated in more words to get credit. That all being said MSU is loved for its mountains, not minds.

Just stay comitted and always reserve a day per week at least to sit down and crank out work. My hospitality program at my school is all online, and its pretty straight forward: Read a section of the text book, take notes, complete quizzes/assigments, then have little forum discussions online with classmates.

Im sure youve heard it a bunch but dont get into that funk of "ill do it later."

It depends on your learning style. Personally I found most of the online courses i have taken to be shit, and WAY more work than it would be to just attend class and do the assignments. That being said, you normally can get high grades in them if you put in the time.
