Online Buyer scamming Seller?

New to online selling and just sold my first item on Mercari. I don't get paid until the buyer receives the item and updates the transaction status online. This puts me in a position where I have to trust the buyer and Mercari's system.

Are there any experienced sellers out there with advice on covering my ass? Trying to avoid:

Item Never Arrived

Buyers receives and takes my item, claims it never arrived and scores a refund from Mercari.

Item Switch

Buyer claiming they received a different or damaged item. They send back a counterfeit or broken item, keeping the original.

False Return

Buyers have been known to try to get refunds for defective goods and end up getting their refund from Mercari while never returning the item to the seller.

Buyer's account is new and has no reviews, listings, purchases, profile picture, or any other information. Also sent me this message that sounds nothing like a brand new Mercari user.

isn't that how most online sellers work? seller/buyer feedback is a good way to foreshadow transactions. I don't ever sell stuff online because I'm afraid of getting screwed and don't feel like dealing with it.

His message felt more like a lure than a genuine promise but yea buyer/seller feedback is a big part of the business. Just thought it was strange that a brand new user would think to message me and already know about the ratings/process that comes after a purchase is received (considering he's never purchased or sold anything before).
