Online Avalanche Course

I don't like this. That teaches you about as much as a shitty porn teaches a virgin about sex. You get the idea of how it works, but when the moment comes, you won't have a clue. Unfortunately more then your ego is at stake.

I agree. The backcountry can be a dangerous place. Experience is necessary to learn anything. I got in an avalanche before I was in my first on-mountain avy course and it was not a fun experience...

The fact of the matter is, a TON of people duck under the ropes to go ski some powder turns in the backcountry, they are ill un-equiped, un-experienced and don't know anything about avalanche danger. They just do it anyways. Then there are those who know of avalanche danger and don't think it'll happen to them. After all, those people over there went.
I've almost been hit my an avalanche where some idiot traversed over my run while i was skiing. I saw it in time fortunately.
When my dad (who I was skiing with) confronted him it was the SAME OLD ANSWER! "I didn't know".

Well... That is what this thread is for. For people to understand the avalanche danger, brush up on their avalanche skills and to gain an awareness. It's NOT for people to go, "Oh I did an online course, I know what I'm doing now." but for them to know enough to think "Wait, I shouldn't go there. There's a huge risk."
I've mentioned it before. This is NOT a substitute to an AST 1 course.
Now, here are some video's of people getting trapped by avalanches. I know Dan Treadway in the first video, his brother Dave was skiing with his wife, a friend of his and his friend's wife on Mt Currie in Pemberton and his friend got hit by an avalanche and died. It's a real danger that people have to understand. That's what this thread is for.

If people are still unconvinced that avalanches are that dangerous. Here is an incident report database for Canada. You can see the number of fatal avalanches per year. That is just Canada alone! Imagine worldwidehttp://www.avalanche.ca/cac/bulletins/incident-reports/view

People will go out regardless, with or without this online avalanche course. What you make of the online resourse is up to you. We can't expect to babysit all the idiots out there who don't have a clue or don't give a shit about their safety. People are dumb, if this dumb person is to duck the rope then honestly I'd prefer he/she at least read the material and knows a little rather than know nothing.
I admit though, "Online Avalanche Course" gives the wrong impression but that's what it's called on the website so I didn't think anything of it.

I get where you are coming from but it's like debating the point that as cars get safer, people drive faster and get a false sense of security. This is true but the benefits of the safer will overall be beneficial. Hopefully you get my analogy. And if someone is so determined to to spend money on an AST 1 course, there are plenty of books that teach you all the information you have online. This source is free, a good start before taking the course and a good refresher for stuff you might have forgotten or usually overlook.

this is great man. my dad got me and my brother a probe and pieps beacons for christmas. strapped one to my dog and had him run in the forest and i went and found him. good day with my dog and some snow.
