Last year on November 6 we lost a man to the first avalanche of the season. Unfortunately he left his beacon in his backpack and was dug up only a few minutes too late and unfortunately died. PLEASE REMEMBER TO GO INTO THE BACKCOUNTRY PREPARED AT ALL TIMES ALL SEASON LONG REGARDLESS OF WHAT MONTH IT IS!

why not just buy jackets with reckon. well thats hypocritical cuz i dont have one but whatever
those only work if your mountain or search and rescue group has a special reco transmitter that locates those silly little tags. They have NOTHING to do with standard MHZ avy beacons.
If your with a group and that is all you have, your have NO way of locating eachother outside of probbing, hand-digging.
I just upgraded my old yellow pieps (she was with me for 8 years) for a new digi Otovox. and my shop just replaced my naxo heel piece, all we need is snow now

Once you're over railing on the "noob" take a moment to educate yourselves in regards to the various snow safety products that are available.
1) "recco" (not reckon) is nothing more than a small piece of "reflective" material attatched to a garment or piece of equipment.
2)It is a system that is absolutely independant of a beacon(no beacon will detect a recco chip, BEACONS CAN ONLY PICK UP SIGNALS FROM OTHER BEACONS).
3)The machine that is ued to locate recco chips cost about $5000 and are quite cumbersome. What this means is that unless the incident happens in proximity to an area where the patrol has recco it is moot whether or not your jacket and pants say recco on the little rubber patch.
4)Beacons are of no use unless you know how to use them. practice, practice and practice some more and hope that the only time you have to turn it to recieve is during a drill!
Dont be shy, ask someone you trust to help practice this shit and if all your friends are beaters ask patrol to help you out. Most patrols will always have a beacon burried somewhere inbounds and would be more than happy to help you out.
Lets try to keep the headlines out of the papers that read "he was a backcountry expert but didnt have a beacon."
