On hill waxing?

So if my skis are going slow i usually cork on some wax to speed em up. Is that the best thing to do, what do you guys do?
 
yes that works, other times the reason they are going slow is because there is a layer of shit covering your wax so you have to clean it off with some kind of a base cleaner. A prime example in spring skking in the midwest. An oil is added to manmade snow and it covers your skiis pretty quikly and slows things wayyy down
 
I wax nearly every day that I ski, but, I carry some flourinated paste wax, and rub it on at lunch on really slushy days
 
Meh you should avoid waxing on the fly if possible, hot wax is how it should be done. Spring skiing and stuff its understandable, but cork/rub on wax is either stupid expensive for the good stuff, or really cheap for the shitty stuff that you shouldnt put on your skis all the time.
 
bring a plastic scraper or a ruler to scrape off grime that gets on your bases, then put some lighter fluid or some other base cleaner on them. in late spring i have to do this every 2-3 runs, otherwise i won't get anywhere.
 
NEVER use actual base cleaner on your bases (even the Swix tech reps will tell you the same). Base cleaner should really be called "kick wax remover" for Classic X-Country skis. If you use it on glide wax areas, it actually removes the glide wax that has penetrated and conditioned your bases, thus making your bases slow.

To clean your bases, you should do a hot scrape. Melt on some cheap wax, iron it over the base, let it sit for a minute, then scrape it off. It will pull out the dirt from your bases but not remove the wax that has penetrated and conditioned your base.
 
i live and ski most of the time in iowa most of the time and it gets slushie some tell me how to keep my skis fast on a day like that keep it simple
 
Not a simple question... We need to know what kind of skis you have, since that will tell us what kind of base material you've got. That will then tell us the best solution for you.

And fyi, hot waxing skis is not a super simple procedure you can just to 10 minutes before you go out...
