thank you colby for hitting a rail and realizing boxes are for the kiddy park at your friendly neighbour ski hill, not the X games. oh ya and for not doing quadruple switch ups all the way down the hill.
 
i think the boxes are cool.....all the snowborders hit the rails and .... dont do anything... they can do much cooler things on the boxes
 
yea! he was going soooo slow too, i thought he was gonna fall. candides sw 630 was sick though...
 
candides 630 was hucked and sketchy, its a wicked gnarly trick that takes huge cahones, but he's done better... hatveit was throwing ill shit during the whole games
 
Boxes aren't so bad in a competition. You can do more technical tricks more consistantly on them, if there where no boxes we would have seen the exact same stuff over and over thus making it like last years Xgames big air
 
I can kind of respect both sides of this argument, I too would have loved to see more skiers actually hit the rails instead of the boxes but in a contest where the slightest mistake (despite attempted sweetness) means a rider has virtually no chance of scoring well regardless of how sick the rest of their run is it's not really all that surprising that many riders opted to steer clear of the rails. Perhaps if there were all rails and no boxes so riders had no choice but to hit them we would get to see who is truly the most well rounded skier insofar as ability and style on both jumps and rails.
 
Why don't the snowboarders do anything cool? Shaun White did a 270 or something and danny davis did a switchup on that first down rail, which was sick. Other than that it was pretty stock.
 
he went switch on rotating away from the rail, not towards it, then did a blindside 270 out. Going switch on without doing a switch lipslide is really hard, which is why you hardly ever see people doing it.
 
coming in switch from the side and olling on with tails going over the rail first (instead of nose) to blind 270 out, and yes it was clean as fuck.
 
btw I agree with you entirely on this thread, hemlockjibber. Boxes don't belong on an X Games slopestyle course.
 
the boxes look so fun I'd much rather hit a flat down box than those rails, there is so much more possibilites on the boxes, and its not always about how hard shit is the boxes prob are way more fun
 
ppl hit boxes cause they could do sicker tricks on them. double sw up 270 out. 360 sw up 270 out on the trap, those all would score much better than 270 out of the down rail and other tricks ppl were doing on them
 
How are there more possibilities on boxes? You can spin or switch up on a rail just like on a box — it's just harder. Any one of those athletes can do multiple switch-ups on a box without a problem.

And sadly, the X Games isn't about fun, it's about who's prepared to lay down the best run and win a whole shitload of money for it. I'm sure those boxes are fun, but hey, 10-foot flat rails are fun too. That doesn't mean they should be on the X Games course.

By the way, I think the craziest rail trick of the Games might go to Spriggs... I heard he 630ed on to the rail before the final kicker.
 
I knew I'd get flamed for that comment, I actually didn't see his run on television but watched it a solid 10 times on expn and what I saw was this... Candide 630 to the last 2 feet of the box, barely landing on the box, holding it together and landing. I did go back and look again and one angle looks wayyyyyy smoother than the other, overall sick trick to throw in competition, just saying he's done better you know?
 
see now i would consider that a lipslide cuz lip is when the end u pop wit goes over the rail. like in skateboading inf you nollie over its a nollie lip not nollie board
 
yea he 630ed on, 270 out. It was clean. Personally, the way candide flowed his whole run together (aside from the fucking revert at the top) made it so appealing. His switch 630 linked his 9 to sw 10 nicely, so he maintained speed, didnt revert, and did something sick.

I don't think that it is a bad thing that there are boxes on the course, however, having a box option on every rail feature is kind of weak - almost dumbing down the course and giving it a larger margain for error. Sometimes it is nice to have purely a rail option, but variety is a delightful feature.

 
okay I see both sides of the arguement here, as well as the obvious fact that rails are harder and more technical than boxes.

However, this IS the X-games, and this IS one of the only times that lots of people outside the sport get to see it. If everyone is doing the exact same shit on rails, even tho it might be harder, it does not look nearly as impressive to the average joe.

SURE the x-games shouldn't be about the average Joe, but it is, so deal with it. And besides, every snowboarder hit the rails and it was so fucking boring. Aside from Davis' run which was fucking dope.

The reality is that most pro's can't nail a 270 on to a down rail clean everytime. and for those who can then fantastic you should hit the rails and be rewarded for it. But for everyone else i would much rather see 360 switch-ups and switch 630's on. SO keep both boxes and rails in the comp. problem solved.
 
for all the people saying you can just do more tricks on a box. no. you can do all the same tricks just easier. the key phrase here is easier. these are supposed to be the best skiers in the world. step it up or go home. practice. get techy. dont just bring the spin to win to boxes. if they practice those rails they will get very decent tricks regularly. i think the key is just not giving them the box option
 
if there were only rails no one would be throwing 360 switch upsd and double switch up to 270 out cus its too hard to stick everytime. everyone would have to be more conservative and it wouldn't be as fun to watch so then less people would watch and then skiing'd just get less airtime next year.

i like the box options. its much more entertaining
 
I can see exactly why people don't want boxes there and I kind of agree, but really we'd see so much less technical stuff geting thrown down if all there was is rails. And please don't just say they should practice more, they are practicing and don't have the time to practice getting 360 switch ups perfect on rails cause they've got tons of other stuff they have to work on too.
