hey guys im looking to buy a small DSLR and ive pretty much narrowed it down to the E 420, D40 or maybe the D60. any insight would be nice especially on the E-420.

not always true, some just pick a certain brand because they like the feel of their cameras. try them out in a store to see. for the record I shoot Canon, I'm not trying to be biased towards a brand other than those two.
 
after having used the k100d a fair bit i would have to say that it was one of the worst cameras i have ever used, the AF was slow and useless(it was faster for me to manule focus 95% of the time), and the auto white balance was terrible, how ever the build quality is fairly good for a entry level camera. so my experiance with Pentax was fairly terible. however the image quality was preety good, but not as good as canon or nikon.
