Olympics 2008 protesting and boycotting?!

The whole point is that the Olympics have been about peace and sportsmanship for hundreds of years. Pulling out would make our country look absolutely ridiculous. She wants to use the Olympics as a tool to manipulate her stupid political ventures.

so hypocritical right there. Ok Tibet has always been a part of china for tens of thousands of years undisturbed. When China wants to industrialize, they go implementing "order" in tibet. that is the same as kiling your ppl blah blah.

but you can't hold some crazy grudge if those same people now live with you and you are treated like everyone else

How are the tibetans not treated like everyone else?! ITS THE FACT THAT THE GOVERNMENT WANTS THE TIBETANS TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE THAT CAUSES ALL THE TURMOIL IN THE FIRST PLACE!

The tibetans started it in some ways. Its them wanting to be independent. I said nothing about Native Americans being angry about the past. I said what if they wanted to be independent now so they can roam their lands free?

yeah, that was a lot to read so i assumed it wasn't put out there. well wither way, who actually listens to hillary? right wing or left, we can basically all agree she's not one to take too seriously. unless if she plans on competing herself, her opinion doesn't count.

I'm sure that would probably be ok if we were all situated on some little island, seeing that everyone is so lovey dovey these days

where was hilary in 1996 when her husband sold weapons to the Chinese?

doing the dishes?

or is the difference, she is now running for president?

Interesting.

It's cool that some of these guys speak Chinese.

I agree with Rowen for the most part. Jumister seems like a pissed off chinese person who is going too far to defend himself/other chinese people.

hahaha your rediculous. Hillary recomending to president Bush that he not be at the ceremony is completely different than the U.S. boycotting the olympics. Bush probably won't even take her advice into consideration. relax ya tiny dick cry baby

The chinese government wants to rule the world with their coal, and Alberta's oil.

Don't believe me?

The largest strip mine in the world is in Alberta, check it out on google.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE FUCK KLIT-ITTAT IS?

did you make this thread to dis ppl? prob not, you made it so we could discuss right, then y arnt you agreeing wit any1, every1 is entitled to their opinion so stop trying to think your right all the time... besides if america pulled out of the sydney olympics in 2000 i woulda said yea who gives a fuck, we dnt want you here anyway

May I start by saying I don't know where you go to school, but there doing a very poor job at teaching you any sort of civility, history, IR, political science, or anything for that matter.

CCTV is a state ran t.v. channel in China that spews party propaganda and rarely the truth, using it as a news source is like watching Fox News only ten times worse. The left wing media is certainly not the only part of the country that is opposed to the human rights abuses that China continues to commit, I personally know many compassionate people from all backgrounds who believe that Tibet should be freed from communist oppression. Classifying the Tibetan race as "crazy nomadic monks" and calling them "an uncivilized tribe of terrorists" is not only offensive and racist, but also shows that you have little to no understanding of Tibet's culture, history, or people. I doubt that many Buddhist monks are involved in much violence, though I can understand that many Tibetans may be prone to violence like most oppressed people have been throughout history.

The Olympics have a long history of being boycotted for political reasons, including ending apartheid in Africa. To me any tool that the US has to promote human rights abroad it should use, and if that includes boycotting a sporting event to send a message to the Chinese that we don't support their oppression of the Tibetan people then thats exactly what we should do. Just so you know here is a map of countries who have boycotted the Olympics in the past

800px-Olympic_boycotts_1976_1980_1984.PNG

wow, thats almost every country on earth..... including China.

man seriously?

Tibetans never moved into Tibet, they have been living there its there HOMELAND "Tibet is a plateau region in Central Asia and the home to the indigenous Tibetan people." Thats the first sentence of the wiki article on Tibet, the Tibetans are indigenous to Tibet. The Chinese were the ones who went into Tibet and took it over and populated it with Chinese, people that the Tibetans didn't want there, the Tibetans are simply asking the Chinese to leave their land.

fuck I'm sorry the more bullshit of yours that I read the stupider it sounds so I have to pace myself.

But Tibet regaining its independence from China is absolutely nothing like the American Civil War, there are literally zero similarities. Regions have peacefully declared independence from states numerous times throughout history and there is no reason that Tibet's succession has to be a violent one (except of course if the Chinese government chooses to make it violent).

So because the Chinese have over inflated ego's we should ignore their human rights abuses, thats just silly.

Again you show utter ignorance about Tibet, they have been a country since the 7th century again I will use a map to prove my point
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:World_820.png

that is a map of the world in 820 AD, notice how the Kingdom of Tibet is represented on it and held almost as much territory as China did. I mean shit England wasn't even a united kingdom until the 9th century.

Again Tibet has NOT always been a part of China, and no country has existed for ten of thousands of years, that is long before any human civilizations started.

Tibetans don't want to be treated like the Chinese because they are not Chinese, they are Tibetan and want to have the right to be Tibetan. I beg to differ that the Tibetans started this since it is a historical fact that China invaded Tibet, not the other way around.

Not claiming that I am super smart, and on it with the current China ordeals but your a bit of idiot yourself. Your deal with liberals is laaammme. Bush has done some pretty bad things for the states and I am pretty sure most are ready for a liberal president, the majority of the world looks at America as a power obsessive, bad decision making super power (I have been to many European countries, India, Nepal, China, and Australia in the 8 months) with a horrible president, that president is a conservative. America probably needs a liberal to change things, a dreamer, someone who can turn things around and let the rest of the world know that America doesn't suck. As far as the Chinese go, sure the Tibetans riot and do some pretty bad things, BUT! What is it that caused the riots. The Chinese took over Tibet, threw the a big religious figure god knows where and it pissed um off. The Chinese went to Everest or whatever and blocked all the area off because they were going to take the torch up there and Tibetans rioted, and man the whole thing is just sketchy. Either way Americans or any other country should not boycott the Olympics, but the Chinese should probably behave themselves when it comes to huge world competitions. In a nut shell I do not want to start anything, I just don't think you should be flaming on liberals and the Tibetans aren't the only ones doing everything wrong!

it's really stupid because the olympic games committee chose do have the games in Beijing so it not up to her so she can go fuck herself

People still actually watch the Olympics? Here I thought the World Cup had eclipsed it completely.

I'm sure the National Guard would, and I know I'd be on the Native Americans side, protesting to get them more autonomy and better living for the shit they've endured from our fucked up colonial and present government. When you see your children herded together and shot, when you've seen your religious leaders executed in the streets, your house demolished by the army and your culture vehemently attacked, I'm sure you'd want to rage against the perpetrators. Violence is never the right answer, but you have to see where these people are coming from to understand why they think its justified.

Theres tension and anger on both sides, no question. You would have to agree though that the Chinese government is more responsible for the violence and death there. For christ sake, they rolled into the region and imprisoned 10% of the population, and most of those people died in prison. All because they wanted an identity that was different and separate from the rest of the country. They want to be their own nation, they fucking should be, and the repression in Tibet needs be stopped. Age of the nation doesnt have anything to do with it - people are entitled to basic human rights, which China has consistently been violating for the last 50 years.

I knew I was kind of wrong about something. Close though basically the same thing, I was arguing they took there land, and they did. I just said the wrong spot

Wow. I love that you're blaming "liberals" for all of this, and saying that boycotting the olympic opening ceremonies are worse than the deaths of countless iraqis, 4000+ US soldiers, and the new iraqi insurgency...

Ju, you've never made a single statement on this site that wasnt at least 60% unbiased, opinionated, or absolutely ridiculus...

I'm going to go out and just tell you now, to please.. give it up. You seriously are just making a fool out of yourself. In all honesty, your blasphemic statements are just as comical as they are angering, but please.. for your own sake.. keep your opinions to yourself and stick to talking about skiing or something like the rest of us ussually do.

oh, and FREE TIBET!

Well I haven't really read too much of this thread because its pointless arguing so hopefully this hasn't been mentioned already.

Boycotting the Olympics is idiotic. It won't solve any problems and only punishes that athletes that have trained for this. For most of them this is their only chance and taking it away from them because the Olympic Committee made a decision 5 years ago or whatever is idiotic.

A boycott would punish the athletes far more than it would punish China.

A lot of the athletes themselves are actually pulling out because of air quality and some other things
