OK if i vent about HappyDayz?

OK this movie makes me mad

Don't judge me yet, i'm 21 yrs old and I've been skiing since I was 4 and I got into freeskiing/newschool back before Degenerates, I got State of Mind when it came out and have been with it ever since. Happy Dayz really showed me something though and it kind of upsets me, it really shows us the sport is traveling in the wrong direction. If you look at who has the longest and biggest segments, its Tanner, Boyd, CR, and Raps. There are others but i;ll talk about these first. They all ski the same. Yes they are all the 'leaders' of our sport and they have all adopted this goddamn gorilla style and ganster attitude. Now before you say everyone has their own style and dont worry about how they ride, hear me out. Before last year all these guys had their own style. Tanner could throw insanely clean and perfect tricks, raps laid out all his Dspins and corked out all his lui kang jumps, CR through mad bio and crossed up corked jumps, and Boyd was tweaking the hell out of all his jumps. Now they all look like the same person, Is this really a good thing? THIS IS THE REASON MIKE DOUGLAS, JP AUCLAIR, JON OLSSON, and CANDIDE and all the rest of the best and originators HATE this new worthless style. It takes away the individual style of each skier, plus it looks ridiculous any way you look at it. It makes them look like fucking beginners. This is why Happy Dayz wasnt good in my opinion. Skiers with their own style(Henrik, JF, Vinnie, Pep, Philou, etc) had tiny segments but Johnny decided to give the biggest segments to the 'COOL' skiers. No offense, but it seems like he only showed the skiers he decided were the popular ones right now and not the skiers who had the most impressive skills to showcase. Anyway, just my trhoughts

So whats your point? So what, you don't like monkey style? It is your own opinion and

so you should buy movies with skiers you like to watch.

I'm with you 100%. When I watch vids, I wanna see people really push the limits and do some huge, tweaked trick. Instead I see someone like Tanner do a 'Steez 3' which just isn't exiting. Another thing I hate is all the hip-hop in vids, Punk/Rock music is where it should be, like Guinea Pigs, I LOVE the trailer for that vid because it has the Fast feel to it. A lot of other vids just have a drone hip hop beat to it with some guys saying fuck 4000 times in the background, it sucks ass if you ask me.

Personally, I like the really big tweaked style like when someone does a mute and their back is really arched and they're tweaking it. Instead I see Hall do a mute where he's all hunched over and doing a mute that's not tweaked at all.

watch how much tanner has changed from scandolous to blunt, nuff said, he's a poser, he's posing as a gangsta, it makes me sick

my intire crew waited for his ass at the bottem of the hill and beat the shit out of him. i broke his poles agianst a tree, and we snapped one of his skis. fucker got uppercutted so much. he was bleeding from his eyes and shit, crying like a little pussy. i busted out a body slam on his ass and broke both of his arms. the ski patroler broke up the fight and clipped all of our tickets. we where gonna beat the shit out of the patroller but my mom came to pick us up.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has the balls to say he didn't like happy days or the fucking ugly gorilla style

I was kind of pissed off about happy dayz, but it was mainly because the originals that jonny originally started filming with, aka new candian airforce, all had shitty segments. The Game, and Propaganda were both better, and get me much more stoked to go and ski. There were so many skiers packed into one song, that pissed me off. Personally, i though stereotype was better, but jonny is still sick. Next year, hopefully, he will come out with a movie featuring the originals with good segs., he should make game 2.

it about time more people have come out and slammed stupid gorilla steeze. i am definetely not looking forward to the coming years if this is where skiing is going.

i was thinking this recently...i used to realy like cr's style, now with his new cork 3 evey 30 seconds it gets borring...i like his corks but im tirred of the cork 3

The only movies i've seen in the last couple years that have REALLY got me stoked on skiing are ski movie 1 and strike 3. I'll have happy days and front line by the end of next week.

fuck this. skiing isn't about movies. we all know tanner's a park rat, but we all also know that he is a pretty damn good skier, better than all of us...i think jp and all them are way good, but alot of people are focusing in on 'progressive' park shit...so this is what the PEOPLE want apparently...and as for the gangster gorilla style, it's comfortable.

joey: whats that?

me: i dunno

Joey: me either but it's comin back!

Tanner a poser!? HA... hmmm ya, lets see....

the best (or one of the best) skiers, and he's posing. HOW? what? cause he's changed. Your style never changed? I just can't understand how you guys can call him a poser when he's the best.

Perhaps its just the old adage that its easiest to scrutinize those at the top.

you missed his point.

and linechick...we know tanner is a great skier, all those guys are, the point that this guy was trying to make is that they've all begun to adopt the SAME style...takes away from idividuality in the sport and isn't exactly progression in my opinion.

Ok, what pisses me off is that not more people INTELLIGENTLY support the gorilla style.

There are merits to it. Watch tanner jump. He barely moves his arms at all in his tricks. In my mind this is the thing that sets it apart from the rest. Look at him slide that circle rail...

Plus, having diversity of style is the key to newschool skiing. Those out there who would say 'Gorilla style is GAY! ONLY CROSSING SKIS IS COOL!' Would put limitations on the sport and turn it into nothing more than classic freestyle.

If we keep diversity, and have many different styles over the years, it will always keep fresh and interesting.

Gorilla style is the D-spin of this year.

Skiers want to be accepted by snowboarders and the rest of the alternative sports industry it is only natural to follow the trends.

We're still growing. Give it time.

And in terms of speaking out.... Hip hop is bad. But punk music is WAY worse.

I wish skiing could have some fucking musical talent in the videos...

I'm over it.

You call hip hop bad, yet you have a wu logo as your icon...right...

I was definately dissapointed by Happy Dayz as well. It really lacked all around. Strike 3 was best overall. Ski Movie 3 had some sick segments (ie...Seth, CR). Stereotype was cool, havent seen all of it yet though. BLUNT should be pretty good as well.

hey,

when it comes to music, i dont think that anyone has the right to rag on any form or genre in ski videos. there are so many diverse musical types in this world to say ' oh hiphop is bad, but punk is wwaayy worse' is stupid and narrow minded to bring up such a point. it is a worthless argument...

as for tanners style, the way he skis, his style on the snow can change and adapt, but when you wear gold chains, when you ski, and just try and pimp out to hard, thats being a person that your not, and im not all about it... id rather him just be himself and throw huge cork 3's and flat 5's, then dress like method man and throw a stteeezzzzyyy 3..... just be yourself, and throw stylie shit, its that easy

this whole gorilla style isnt what it used to be. eric pollard was throwing tricks with this style, hes been skiing that way longer than everyone else. now that everyone seems to have this style of skiing, it doesnt set pollard apart from everyone like it used to.

I cannot believe what I am reading here, it is almost insanity. The debate here is not whether happy dayz is a good movie or not, it is whether gorilla steeze is good style or not.

First of all, a lot of you connect gorilla steeze to ghetto or gangsta. This is not at all the case, you cannot say because one gets high grades in school, he must wear nerd clothes.

They are totally seperate issues, you cannot base how they act off snow by the style they have on skis.

Secondly, I think gorilla steeze is sick. It is the smoothest way to do a trick because it makes it so easy to grab safety and makes it a lot easier to slide rails. How can you say 'shit man, thats gay' just because he is crouched instead of standing upright.

It is just a different kind of style, end of story. And for those who say Tanner, CR are all posers because they use gorilla steeze. I see a lot of posers here jumping on to the gorilla steeze bashing bandwagon because none of you have any logical arguements at all.

- Marc

I couldnt agree more with the original post. I'm not argueing either way that Gorilla Steeze looks good or bad, but it makes everyone lose their own style.

C.R. just totaly copied Tanner. Look at him in last year's films, then this year, it's like a totaly different skier. So by trying to be original, he's just copying someone else.

I don't think the point of the original post was to debate whether or not gorilla steez was cool, it was the fact that 4 of the top pros have adopted the same style and all their segments look the same. That's the issue here, the lack of individuality in their style now.

yo, to the dude that posted this thread.

the original guys had short segments cuase most of them were hurt a lot this year.

JF and JP were hurt a lot; they had short segments. vinnie was hurt, he had a short segment. shane and mike d weren't hurt, they had long segments. the other guys u naemd with short segments had short segments just cause they don't film with jonny as much. it's not that he wanted to give them short segments, it's just that he doesnt film with them like he films wiht tanner and shit

MOREOVER- the only reason anyone is in a major ski movie is because of SPONSOR DOLLARS, not because they are cool. Every major ski movie is basicly a 45 minute commercial for the sponsors.

yah, and the only reason pep had the short segment is because he wasnt really discovered until mid season, i think.

Hey guys, thanks for the support, i kind of expected to get bashed for saying all that but i think it is all true. My point was that a lot of these pros are ditching their old style of skiing and adopting this new style which in turn makes a lot of their skiing look the same. Just look at movies from last year compared to this year and you will know what i mean. You guys all made good points though. I just don't want skiing to go in this direction. 'Gorilla Steez'(fuck i hate that name) doesnt allow for a big variety of tricks so it worries me that this is the way skiing will go. Are you going to see the end of the Dspin, rodeo, and such...all given up for corked 3s and 7s? I show my friends who dont ski very much 13, propaganda, strike 3, and ski movie 3 and then I show them happy dayz and they hate happy dayz. Not fun to watch these skiers do the same tricks over and over

This is just stupid what I'm reading, Happy Dayz is the smoothest, sickest ski vid ever. It's not just about the tricks in a ski movies either, the jump (the actually snow part) is just as much part of the shot as the skier and the trick are, are the shots that were in Happy Dayz are soo far above what other PBP vids have had. This vid is shot seamlessly, everything looks soo good and blends together so well. When I watch a ski vid, I dont just want to see trick after trick of shit, I want to see sweet locations, well set up shoot and sick jumps (the snow part) and Happy Dayz certainly delivered. This is the best shot PBP by soo far, and not to mention the editing, soo good, I think every segment is edited amazingly except for Douglas, but he had a good MSP segment so I dont care.

About the 'Gorilla Steeze' thing, well lets see.

Skiers who dont use Gorilla:

-Dorion

-Olsson

-Easly

-Douglas

-Auclair

-Schad

-Szocs

-Burke

-Boronoski

-Leskinen

-Poirier

-Windstedt

Skiers who do use Gorilla:

-Hall

OH MY! Did you have to sit through two segments with the gorilla steeze?, OH NO! are you going to be alright, do you need a tissue, dont cry now.

For fuck sakes, this vid rocks. period. end of story.

_DECAfilm

he does make a good point

what the fuck are we all crying about? and even if all the pros started skiing like hall, would you change your style? i dont think soooo

im def not 'jumping on the bandwagon', but its not that i think gorrila style is gay, i jst don;t like it, and i think its unprofessional

And I'm somethin of a Phenom, one puff of the chron, im unstoppable, im alive and on top again, there's no obstacle that i can't conquer, so come along w/ us

one thing i think that hasn't really been mentioned is: Do you think 'Gorillia Steeze' will win very many comps??? I think this is why Tanner will always rule and continue to make you little 5 yr olds mad. he can go throw a crossed up Dspin 10 one hit and then throw a slow 3 with no excessive body movement... get used to it kiddies, unless someone pulls a Tonya Harding on T, he will the dominant force in our sport and perhaps, our own Terje Hakkonsen

yeah. t-hall's switch 7 mute in front line was beautiful. amazing shot super tweaked. The fact is do you want to see someone pull a 3 mute all of the time? sorry but I'd like to see someone switch it up and do a big slow 3 with no movement every once and a while. and gorrilla steeze owns it on rails, there's no dispute if you're down low and wide stanced you can slide pretty much anything. (and you can't slide everything with a normal stance - ex. JF in propaganda on the rollercoaster rail) 3s will get old something new will come along and everyone will bitch about how it makes the skier look funny but then they're go out the next season try that style and realize it's not bad. There are so many different ways to ski, people being different is a good thing, it would suck if every segment looked the same eh?

I just hate seeing all these suburban preps thinkin they're from the ghette it's ridiculous. especially tanner hall I mean for god's sakes the kid is from northern montana in redneck city I live in montana I should know. he'd be better off wearing wranglers and a cowboy hat, it's too hard to take him serious when he thinks he's a gangsta

the thing I like about highschool girls, is I keep getting older but they stay the same age!

Actually my name isn't even James!

'would you ski all gorilla like on the rest of the mountain... nope because its not functional to ski that way in powder or while just freeriding. Jon stated in his article in the new freeze. 'why ski up to a jump with looking like a gorilla, do a normal trick in the air and then land and ski away like a gorilla' its stupid. Oh and what else is funny is tanner hall thinks he invented gorilla style, but Eric Pollard has been doing a toned down version of it since TEE-TIME.

sacrifice, to some its just a word, to others it is a code, what matters is the colony, he is willing to live for the colony, fight for the colony, die for the colony.

When the fuck did tanner hall claim he invented 'gorrilla style??!?!?!'

NEVER - STOP MAKING SHIT UP. You know NOTHING.

Doug(MDfresh) is totally right. Look at in the haze. They have some hip hop, but they also have techno, clasical music, enya type stuff, and another one that i dont know how to classify. Its a great movie.

Also, i dont blame CR and Tanner for looking they same, they are roomates. You think since they ski together every day they would pick up eachothers habits.

i think gorilla style is kool but eric pollard never had that style in my opinion he just had the style whjere he barely moves a muscle

gorilla style isnt barely moving you muscles its hanging your arms low looking like a monkey

and how can you say happy dayz sucked. seriosly happy dayz was in my opinion 1 of 2 movies that make me really wwanna go skiing

the other one is strike 3

So, to answer your question, NO! It's not okay for you to vent about happy dayz! It was a very professionally done movie with a lot of variety and Johnny was not trying to make *you* happy!

to whoever posted that gorrila style creates ease in grinding rails:

false-have you watched any other skier grind a rail?they grind perfectly well without being crouched down. being crouched down in no way makes grinding a rail easier. it also does not look stylish at all, considering you can 'not move a muscle' standing upright as well.

and concerning the gorrilla style in general:

in tanners section, there is maybe 3 clips were he is jumping or grinding with these new 'steez'.tanner and Cr are both adapting to the new style, but in happy dayz, there was very little of it shown.I do not enjoy the style at all, because slow and smooth tricks can be done without doing a crouched spread eagle safety.

happy dayz was sick, but after i saw strike 3,i ralized that the amount of proggression in happy dayz was very little. Strike 3 shows a lot of proggression in urban and park jibs, something poor boyz did not.

I totaly agree with what you just said, HOWEVER Happy Days documents progression in the backcountry like skiing has never seen before.

I think you should all fuck yourselves cause the people are you talkin shit on are way fucking better than all of you.

--mesa like butter--

haha as if zero spins off cliffs, three rail gaps, zero spins over houses and what not aren't progression?

and you also have to realize that strike 3 was filmed mostly on the east coast and canada where they actually get snow on the ground in the cities during winter. they all live there so they have more time to set up with rails and shit
