Official Vail Hate thread

my favorite one still is them trying to trademark "Park City" so that local business owners around town that had "Park City" in their business name had to pay up.

Lol I remember that. I think it was just a standard legal process as part of the takeover then they realized the implications and backed off so I give them credit for that.

Yeah, I think they've trademarked all or pretty much all of the resort names of the mountains they own. But Vail out to ruin the world makes a better headline.

yknow say what you want about vail, and i certainly dont like a decent amount of their practices and marketing, but their park quality, epic pass, and infrastructure are hard to beat.

I think they had some sort of townhall meeting about a month ago with Vail execs which they kinda admitted that their handling of the PC takeover did not go as planned and they really didn't consider a ton of impact factors like good snow years, economy being good again, and worker compensation. They've already lost their audience, are now losing their own employees, and are gonna be forced to pay people more if they want people to work for them

The horror, having to actually pay people instead of importing 3rd worlders and aussies.

Vails a big corporation. I'm not a fan of a lot of things they do. I just feel like their an easy target/scapegoat for anything and everything.

Probably 3/4 of the Vail haters in this country hate vail because it's trendy. Also the bailonvail Ikon people are the worst. As if Ikon mtns aren't coporate. Idk I've worked for both companies. I've worked for some tiny hills as well. I feel like the hype train is out of control on the vail hate.

Also Vails wages are actually pretty decent compared to other ski areas. It depends on location though. In some of the areas dominated by big mtns, some of the little guys pay pretty damn well to get people to work for them instead.

Their are good and bad things about any company. I just think they get more hate than deserved. I don't think anyone on here is a fan of the slow zones and yellow jackets, but half the threads about people complaining start with "I was skiing switch full speed on the biggest slow zone trail on the mountain. Yellow jacket stopped me and I was like fuck you dude, I'm in control". People like that are the reason that we're in this situation.

I think if the ski industry in general valued good employees more, paid them/treated them better, they would retain them. Instead of turning and burning season by season which has resulted in the industries heavy reliance on J1s.

It's crazy at even some of the biggest parks, everybody is a first year or second year park staff. If you're 3rd plus you're a lead if not for skill, just for hanging around. That shit's pretty whack. Especially in an area that can be a pretty big liability.

I don't see it changing any time soon though. I know a lot of good folks who worked years in the ski industry that got the fuck out and went to other industries because the pay went up a ton, and the housing situation was much easier etc. People get fucked over by vail mtns, people get fucked over by ikon mtns, people get fucked over by that little mom and pop hill down the street.

Bail on vail is a slogan for jerries and crusty telly skiers who never grew out of the 70s.

The J1 reliance is pretty fucked imo. "Come on an epic vacation to paradise to be a lifty at a ski mtn" Teton just wrote an article on J1s but it kind of came from the wrong angle imo.

If the wage is decent but people don't want to work the jobs, by all means pull in other people, but the ski industry is notorious for paying shit wages, and somehow wonders why anyone more than a 2 year employee is rare.

I'm just ranting because I'm sick af and pissed off I can't ride. Bought a pass to Diamond Peak day before I got sick. Still haven't used it because sleeping forever and trying not to die is more rad.

Is it just me or does it seem like there are tons of people from Argentina that work for Vail resorts?

Yellow jackets pulling passes for people skiing to fast. They have absolute power, yet have no quantifiable way of determining whats to fast. No radar gun or way of measuring. All they have is how fast your going compared to everyone else, pretty subjective to the person in power, and you have no recourse as there are no cameras or very rarely witnesses. Its your word against theirs.

True, but they almost always hang out in congested areas near the base where their are a ton of beginners or on beginner specific terrain.

Also even if you're cruising, if you see them and make an effort to slow down or make a few turns 99% of the time they won't hassle you. Also the attitude you start at them with has a big impact on things.

"Fack you mannnn! I wasn't even going fast!"

Idk I've watched people interact terribly with those guys and ski patrol. Most of the time they weren't totally in the right if any, but regardless if you're a douche it won't help. Same with cops.

It's your word against theirs, but even if they're cunts they're generally going after people who look like their going too fast. Sure that's subjective, but it you aren't going fast as fuck through slow zones, and weaving super close to noobs on beginner trails, your chances of even talking to a yellow jacket are almost nothing.

Very true, obviously theres a spectrum and its east to distinguish someone whos completely out of control. But that gray area between ok and not ok is not so easy to define all the time.

I will agree that most are jerries. It's a strange breed that doesn't really fit into the ski area dynamic. Very rent a cop ish. Would not hang. I was stoked on a pow day in feb a yellow jacket was looking for 2 more people to ride up lift with him and skip the massive line. I was more than happy to do so. Otherwise I try and avoid at all costs.

As far as thread,

Hey Robs Cat, fix yur friggin website! That shit's still super fucked.

there are two types of people

1) people that talk and complain about issues in the ski industry

2) those who take initiative to make a difference in the places they're passionate about.

If you want to make a difference get off the couch and wipe away your tears with your epic pass receipt and get educated about the financials. Sitting around here crying about yellow jackets having never looked at mulit-million dollar terrain park lawsuits that major resorts face every year is just dumb, even writing this seems trivial as this website is just over-empowered kids on their parents credit card bill.

Prove me wrong, make a change you want to see

The ski industry and the resort towns like the J1's because they leave when they're done.

Just like hookers..

Unfortunately probably kinda true. If mountains in big resort towns could survive without having anyone that made under 5 mil live in town, but also paying no more than $5 an hour, they'd be pretty down.

Places like vail are why I wish the economy would collapse and plunge uppity ski resorts into hippie run poacher camps using the runoff from the spring thaw to grow a crop of killer choo choo

I am a brand new Vail hater. This is why recently they bought up our resorts in the East called Peak. The exciting anoucment read Peak is now Epic.We were offered the chance to upgrade our Peak Pass for a Epic yahoo! The catch was first pay for your New Epic and then Peak will refund your old pass, but wait the headline said Peak is now Epic.so long story short 7 days turned into almost a month before I had to fight just to get my upgrade canceled so I would not be on the hook for 2 pass. The bastards at Vail were not even going to do this until I pointed out the obvious fraud. All they cared about was make the upgrade sale and bye bye your on your own........Vail really dose suck
