Official Sled Skiing Thread

About to go pick up an 07 153 m8 with 1500km's on it and i am kind of stoked. When i have been sled skiing it was a game changer every time.

Who else s getting after it on sleds? Post some photos and some stoke! Brapppppp!

I got an 08 SkiDoo 800xp.

Gona sell it.

You don't really go sled skiing, just FYI. You will be on the sled rallying it around more than you ski, if you ski at all. Keep that in mind.

If you want to ski, go hike or skin.

This. Sledding is super fucking fun, but I prefer to keep the two seperated. Don't have a sled currently, but planning on buying one in the future. The only type of sled skiing I really see myself doing, is sledding into somewhere for a day or two, and skinning from there.

that's understood but i spend 30-40 days a season on my skins already. Time to hot lap logging roads in the revelstoke . im not giving up my dfits for anything

You need a good rack, check my profile picks of my rack, I can build you one for a few hundred dollars if you want.

M8 is a sick sled by the way, I got 6000kms out of my M7, still had great compression when I sold it too

You can make a good, cheap ski rack with ATV gun racks and a ratchet strap. I spent $30 and its worked for 7 years for me. Also, buy a hotdogger, hot food in the backcountry is unbeatable

hot dogger or muff pot is so essential, ATV gun rack sounds like a deathtrap if you're ever riding without your skis hahaha, ingenious though, The racks we have built out of alluminum fit everything really well and only need bungy cords to hold them in.

We are in blue river/valemount mostly, would like to make another trip to revy this year though.

Ive posted this in alot of the other threads about sled skiing but I'll try and pass on all of the things we have learnt in the last 6 years so that you dont have to endure some of the shitty things about sled skiing.

First, A fanatastic rack is essential, get it setup perfectly, I have heard alot of good things about CFR's think they are about $300. If not (not trying to sound like a salesman haha) I can build you one of ours for $200 (pretty much material costs) we have been using/perfecting them for 6years (mostly on Polaris's) and have never had one break, they are light weight (alluminum), you can sled all day and not even notice your skis, skis are nice and tight so its easy to get you're sled unstuck with them on (you will get stuck haha).

Second, Get a 55L rafting bag from mec ($20) the ones that fold over and seal. Get a cheap duffel bag that it will fit in. Now take the liners out of your ski boots and put them into your winter boots, put your shells in the rafting bag (along with everything you dont want in your backpack) and strap it to your tunnel. (It all fits perfectly with our racks haha). I just put my entire boot and liner in the bag, the tunnel will keep them warm. Swap them out when you get to where youre skiing. Sledding in ski boots is fucking retarded.

Third, I may need to get some pics up when im not at work to explain this. Get a mountain bike inner tube from MEC ($5) and a good carribeaner. Tie a loop knot in the rope about 4ft from the end, take the inner tube and fold it in half and wrap it around your waist, connect the loops with the carribeaner. Loop the 4ft tail through the carribeaner and back around the loop knot, hold the end. Tie the other end to the sled, great for towwing setup, let go of the the tail when shit goes sideways and it should unwrap from the loop and carribeaner.

I know getting a sled is expensive in the first place but how expensive is it to go out riding everyday? I talked to a friend who said it was like 100$ a day because of gas and sleds burn through oil so fast it has to constantly be replaced. What is it really like? and what about renting?

I just picked up a 08 RMK 700.

Haha, hardly fits on my truck.

Anyways we got a secret sled zone in wyoming. Since I suck at sledding, I will mainly be using it for access to the zone and then skinning to the top of the lines.

just picked this beauty up 3 days ago. 2013 Ski-doo Summit 800... zero mutha fuckin' miles. so stoked. anyone else sled up around Park City or LCC?

It all depends on how you do it. Its about $40 for a tank of gas and about $10 for oil. If you double you can split that or make your friend pay for the fuel if its your sled. Some places charge trail fees if they groom $15 but there are lots of places that aren't groomed. the truck gas is usually where it starts to get pricey, especially with a trailer. Also fixing the sled gets steep as well, I had to rebuild my motor for $2500.

So worth it though.

we live about 5hrs from where we sled and we can usually do a 3-4guy trip for 3 days for under $300 dollars each, we have recently started camping where we ski and its brought our cost down to $200 for 3 days.

we call that a snowmobile not a ski sled. Ski sleds are for people who can't use real skis and they have to sit in a chair on top of skis

Sorry but I don't get how u ski with a sled, two people switch off taking turns skiing down and driving sled? One man hikes back up to sled?

Soon enough, I will have a truck and a sled. It might take a few years but it something I am working towards.
