Official Overlanding Thread.

So I have a bunch of friends into overlanding and have gone with them on a few occasions. It's a great way to experiece the outdoors in a different way and am looking to get into it in the near future. In the next year I plan on buying a truck and buding my rig from that!

For any body that does know, overlanding can be defined as: Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal(Wiki).

So I just thought there would be a few people who want to tell stories, discuss rigs and trails, and just all around share the stoke around overlanding.

Oh wow. I guess this is NSG lol. I totally thought the thread title was something about skiing and was kinda hoping you just meant overshoot the landing and would have some good overshoot clips. Then I read the first sentence I was like you have a bunch of friends that are into overshooting the landing WTF how would you be in to overshooting. It seems like you wouldn't be into it for long or your knees would revolt lol

This thread is actually just about driving a car. TLDR OP is thinking about buying a car

Overlanding is pretty wack to me. Seems like just an excuse to dump 15,000 dollars of shit you’re going to use twice a month 3 months out of the year, while letting everybody else on the road know that you’re an “outdoorsy” person with money on your work commute.

You’re literally going camping, luxurious camping at that. Seems to me the only difference between “overlanding” and just camping is that you put the tent on top of your car for whatever reason. Honestly seems like throwing a bunch of unnecessary money into normally an affordable hobby. (Which is camping)

And no, you don’t need to put a ladder on the back of your 4Runner.

But how else is someone supposed to get artzy pics of them standing on top of a car against a poorly composed background of a mediocre sunset?

Without my second mortgage, nobody will believe I'm rugged and self-sufficient. Fr though I've always liked the saying that camping is where you spend a fortune to live like you're homeless.

OP, buy yourself an awning, recovery tracks and a good set of tyres thats all you need. Ive got so many buddies who sink thousands of dollars to make their rigs loud and I end up having the most fun and the least problems with what I listed above - definately a worthy investment but i wouldnt get anything more

Honestly I wasnt expecting the negative reaction. Although I get it. I'm not looking to be some instagram nutsack. What I'm looking to do is just be able to do is camp out of the back of my truck in some cool places. Overlanding is appealing in the fact that you can cover ground quickly. As a lot of people have pointed out it's pointless to spend tens of thousands of dollars on pointless equipment. The most I will probably do to a truck is add a topper and some tires

Yeah for sure man, wasn't meaning to be neg just in my own personal experience. 100% a great way to get outdoors in summer and a topper and some tires is pretty sweet. would highly recommend an awning as they're easy to set up and good for chilling outside under cove for when you're cooking and stuff. especially if its hot or raining

My buddy has one on his tacoma and it looks pretty rad. I'm not looking to go all out as I intend to use it as my daily driver. It's just a cool way of camping but it will be really nice for a few spots I go climbing at.

Sounds like a great pastime but I'm more practical, it's about the destination point a to point b travel is alot funner when the hubs have ti be locked to get there though.

So car camping? That's what you're posting about?

"No bro, its called OVERLANDING cuz like we're so cool and adventurous and like we need a special term for our special lives. #adventurelyfe #subaruunbound #overlandingintotheweekend #overlandtillidye"

You kids are so fucking pathetic.

I think like 95% of my driving is on highways, but I do love myself some car camping, just your general fire road driving to the campsite and such and real mild 4x4 trails. Got any suggestions for tires that don't suck as much on trails but are still pretty much highway tires? I like the idea of an awning too because that sounds so nice for getting out of the sun for lunch on a big day of bikepark riding. Got any suggestions there?

take a deep breath, you got this. don't let the car campers get you so upset :(

there’s a heap of tires out there that claim 80% on road 20% or 60/40 off road which offer a nice split in performance depending on what you like. BfGoodrich do some awesome tires I’d check them out. Awnings are awesome. Just leave them zipped up on the side of the car and Even if your chilling in a car park or pull up to a lake on a hot day for a swim roll it out and bang you got shade. Best investment on my car so far for sure.

Nothing like driving to the end of a logging road with a killer view and tossing back some beverages. Especially if theirs a peaked to be bagged in the vicinity.
