Official mountain biking thread

I feel like a god damn rookie but totally fine with learning new things.

How often do you clean your bike? I ride lift access literally everyday (today was day 14 in a row!) so I am able to spray down my bike but really that only gets the mud off. I’m worried spraying it too often will lead to rusting. It that a real thing? What about like a deep clean?? Are there certain soaps to use? How often are people lubing their chain, checking/adjusting shock pressure, etc.? What’s something I should be doing that you bet I’m not?

Just finished a 6 hour race. Do as many laps on a 9 mile course in the allotted time. I thought I was I was in shape. Some of you all are wickedly fast.

My dropper cable fell into the frame earlier this year in April. Its been so sad riding XC all summer without it :(

1. How do you lose an entire cable in your frame?

2. Have you tried magnets

Washing your bike every day is best, if you wash your bike often your components will last much longer and your bike will feel much better. Washing your bike is also very important because it helps you to notice issues before they become serious, expensive problems.

As long as the chain is lubed every ride or two, nothing will rust, the bikes are designed to be ridden in bad weather. When lubing your chain, make sure to wipe off the excess and use dry lube, as it will greatly extend the life of your drivetrain.

As far as soaps to use, dish soap works well enough for everything except for the drivetrain, which may require bike specific degreaser. I would recommend investing in bike-specific brushes as they work great for getting into the hard to reach spots of the bike.

Shock pressure shouldn’t change much, I would watch a few videos and play with volume spacers and your suspension adjustments to find what works well for you. Suspension is the most important factor on how your bike feels, and takes a lot of time to get right, so it’s best to start early playing with it.

I’ve only been biking for about 6 years now, and I’m still learning a lot, but that’s some of the most important things I would’ve liked to know in the past.

I had this exact problem a week ago, and I fixed it using the vacuum and string method in about half an hour

I dont own a vaccum, but ive been trying to get it done with a broom and dustpan it just seems to be a lot harder. What horsepower is your vaccum?

Homie at the bike shop said to lube my chain after every ride. I have not been doing that lmao. My chain was so squeaky. Today is day 21 in a row riding lift access. Work laps are certainly not sendy but getting really comfortable on my big bike nonetheless

I lube every ride. Get the muc off dry lube, smells like banana candy. Also lube is cheap and new cassettes/chainrings/chains aren't and it sucks when they wear out.

Depends on the lube. Something like Squirt is a long lasting dry lube that definitely doesn't need to be done every ride.

How come good mtn bikers seem to take so many breaks? Like with skiing, the better you are, the more effortless a top-bottom is in record time. But it seems the fastest bikers are always taking breaks, it’s like they want you to pass them so they can ride your ass over and over. I’m fat and just this week started doing full top-bottom runs, did wonders, I’m like the fastest biker on the mountain except I’m definitely not. But I’m claiming first to bottom yesterday in Vail

my friends are drama spazzes idk how they always find confrontation on the mtn but guess someone chased down, yelled at one of us for going ahead of a group of people who “looked like better bikers”??? If I come rolling up on you on the mountain and you’re taking a break why would I assume you’re faster? Give your fuckin balls a tug. I caught you,,, just annoying cuz obviously trails are narrow

It's a constant battle of gauging rippers from the casuals and where to wait and where to ask someone to pass.

Had a guy chillin on the side of the trail see me pedal up the 2% uphill of a 98% dh run and he jumped on his bike immediately so he would be in front of me and I caught up right away.

I then pulled over to give him a few mins so I can enjoy the ride, but then ~5mins later I catch up again and he pulls over. Like wtf dude just let people be and if you're haulin' ass ask to pass.

Prob stravassholes chasing a microsegment record for fastest transplant techbro gaper under age 39 category idk there's 0 reason to be right on top of other people riding unless they're your homies.

Anyone have any real luck with baconstrips? Used some the first time and they didn't seal for shit and had to use a tube but idk if the puncture was too big or if the guy I bummed them from was just a muppet who didn't stick em in right.

Yeah my rides have been saved many times by bacon strips, some holes are just too big though. I've found they work much better on sidewalls than tread punctures, you also may need to use a couple to get a seal. Spin the tire and/or bounce it on the ground to get sealant to close the hole

it must vary by state but in CO we dont do emissions testing on mountain bikes

Fuck thought i was in the other thread mods plz delete I'm obvs permanently mentally disabled for having to go out of my way

Biked the Revy bike park for the first time today, first resort ever and all. Trails were sick as hell managed to send some decent jump lines and shit. But my bike took a beating, back tire is deflating and leaking sealant. And the derailer was some cheap plastic one the Sram SX, it fucking shook to garbage. Parks are sick though

Finally got my Mojo 4 build finished up and rode it for the first time. Such a fun, poppy bike. Just gotta swap the 2 piston brakes for some 4 pots. First pair of carbon wheels (Nobl rims w/ oil slick nips) and silent Onyx hubs. Had to go with the purps for accent color

Local cycling club is finishing up a brand new bike park right behind my house. Started looking around on PB and found this bad boy for a steal. So stoked to add a DJ to the quiver.
