Official mountain biking thread

Well call me a geek, because that was stupid fun. Made mobbing moderate trails really entertaining.

I now want a carbon gravel bike, and lycra so I can make you uncomfortable.

Nothing would make me more uncomfortable than you in spandex.

For real though, I find this gravel bike phenomenon hilarious (let's be real, most bike trends right now are hilarious). 10 years ago, any trail remotely gravely was seen as the enemy of mountain bikers. Now there's bikes of the namesake.

I mean, it doesn't mean you're actually going through gravel.

If you're on dry trails without any big hits, or ruts, a cx bike is plenty. All it's really doing is taking the insane lightweightness of a road bike, and throwing bigger tires on them.

Oh I'm well aware, I grew up in Marin haha

Yeah, underbiking is the best. I looooove my Kona Sutra LTD. I could probably do 60% of my mountian bike rides on that thing, and you can enjoy the road as you ride to and from the trail too. The whole "gravel/adventure" biking trend has some dumb parts, but the bikes are rad. Sort of like "Enduro." I really need to play with different tires on that bike, apparently I could potentially fit 2.3" Highrollers on it, which would be an INSANE setup. Shocking how capable a steel drop bar bike with 1x, good geometry, and good brakes can be....

Dude the Sutra is sweet. Steel is real.

I rode this Haka with 2.3's on it and it was an absoute blast. I'm not like the most experienced mountainbiker or anything, but shit, climbing on that thing was an absolute joke. effortless on a level that I can't exactly explain. I mean the bike is like 18 lbs and was running a 1x12. It's fucking stupid. I didn't even have to breathe.

Been night riding with these short days we have now. Really fun way to experience the trail.

LOL yeah bud its called night riding....... good god. Its like if a gaper came up to you and was like, "man have you ever skied at the resort when its dark out!? Its so crazy, everything is different!"

Well, sold my frame this morning, time to box it up and decide what I'm getting next. Because I'm anal AF I just made a spreadsheet to help compare geo between the 12 bikes I could potentially be interested in...ugh. At least I'm in no hurry to get a new one.

Highest in the running right now:

Transition Smuggler

Knolly Fugitive

Maaaaybe the Stumpjumper Evo 29

Ripmo on the list? I don't really like 29ers, but the Ripmo looks rad. The Knolly would be a pretty unique bike to own. Didn't know they did 29ers now. Have they gone carbon too?

LOL yeah bud it's called having fun. Every day skiing and biking I have a problem - Smiling like an idiot at the bottom every time. Can you give me some advice for balancing this out? Surely you had destructively bad things happen in your life. Jerry stole your girl? Your "friends" betrayed you and pulled your pants pulled down in front of the girl you liked before you hit puberty? After puberty, and it still ruined things with her? Drank yourself into oblivion and realized your future is hopeless? Spent your life savings on hookers and now riddled with diseases? Got caught sexually assaulting a horse in the woods?

Nice, what lights are you using?

niterider lumina 1200 on the bars and helmet. Fairly happy with them. Only criticism is sometimes I feel like the beam is a little too concentrated. My backup light is a light and motion urban 550, the beam is nice and dispersed on that one, but not powerful enough

Do you find those bright enough even for the faster downhill parts to? I have been looking at some 6000+ lumens options for enduro style riding but that may not be necessary then.

I definitely can't ride as aggressively as daytime, but still fast enough to be fun. These are the brightest lights I've ever owned, but if I had the budget I'd 100% go brighter. I've been playing around with different setups and settings and think a really strong light on the bars and a less intense but still solid light on the helmet for tech sections would be ideal. If you were going to ball out on lights I think the lumina 1200 could be a good helmet option.

Enduro is a stage racing format that was invented 10 years ago. Its not a fucking style or type of riding.

hey just a biking jerry herecan anyone reccomend a good downhill/hybrid bike for me?

need for both road and mountain trails... (idk what exactly I should specify/elaborate on for bikes)

my dad pulled got a hurnia and its all he really does nowadays to keep active and id like to get into it with him

This is the first thing you've said in ages that I actually agree with

Get a 29er hardtail just to get into the sport and still have an ok time on roads and work from there.

Thank you.

"ARE YOU GUYS GONNA GO SLALOM AT PCMR TODAY?" "WHO WANTS TO GO TO THE SKATEPARK TODAY AND SKATE STREET LEAGUE!?" "BRO YOU SHOULD BUST YOUR BIKE OUT AND WE SHOULD CRIT LATER TODAY! I'M TOTALLY INTO CRIT RIDING!"

That's why you gapers sound idiotic when you use the term "enduro" to describe going on a fucking trail ride. Oh you pedal up and ride down trails? WOW YOU'RE LIKE SO ENDURO. YOU'RE TOTALLY ENDUROING IT UP! Fuck off, every single one of you.

Haha chill out man, enough other threads in nsg to rant in so if your actually into biking maybe try to keep that shit out of this thread? Yeah your probably right enduro is the wrong term but I cant see why that actually matter as long as people understand what I meant.. Also most of the riding I have done recently have been pushing/carrying the bike or shuttling to the top so I wouldn't really call it trail rides either when I barely pedal.

YOU DON'T FUCKING DO THAT IN ENDURO RACES EITHER, YOU FUCKING MORON! SHUT THE FUCK UP AND STOP USING THAT TERM UNLESS YOU'RE PARTICIPATING IN AN ENDURO RACE! FOR THE LOVE OF JOSEPH MARY N' JESSIE

That nose tap table top! Voreis is awesome. Must be fun working with him.

I was out for a quick ride today. Why does my chain slip? I’m not sure mechanically what happens but there’s a metallic ding or click and it’s like the chain slips for a second then engages. Wanna say it’s when going from coasting to pedaling, presumably when the chain is under high tension. Bike is a Norco Charger, nothing fancy.

If your gears are adjusted properly my guess is a worn out chain/cassette? As the chain bushings gets worn out the chain will get longer and start sitting higher on the cassette cogs, which can eventually cause slipping and will cause the cassette to wear out quickly to. You can measure the wear with a ruler to see if this may be the problem.

Not enough downhill chat here!

Just uploading a picture of the most cursed bike in Canada right now. Previous owner broke his collar bone on it last year and I broke my wrist riding it 4 months ago. Still an absolute beast of a bike and such good value for money, my riding skills sky-rocketed this summer and stoked to ride it again next year.

I have the model year after yours, such a sick bike. I was thinking about getting a new DH bike next year, but in all honestly I will probably hold off and just get my suspension super tuned/changed.

anybody know of any good enduro style trails in so cal?

To add on to this, I notice that when I'm riding enduro style I seem to struggle with my form but it goes away when I switch to downhill style? Maybe skierman can help me out I think he mentioned he has alot of experience coaching enduro style.

Aaaaaand Fucccccit. Pulled the trigger on a used Smuggler frame. Too good a deal to pass up. Hope I don't mind the alloy too much, but I doubt I will.

I looked at the Ripmo, It seemed like a little more bike, with a little slacker seat tube than I wanted. Knolly looked sick, but I just bought I9's and I don't feel like dealing with that "super boost" BS on the rear end of that bike. So Transition it is. Pretty stoked, just cause I've wanted a transition since I was 12 and all the cool kids had Bottle Rockets. Now I get to stare at my new bike for 5 months during ski season!

buuuuut the Ripmo has a steeper STA by .2 degrees then the smuggler??

My bad, misread my nerdy homemade geometry spreadsheet!

The point still stands, coming from a bigger bike (hightower LT) I want something pretty different, I feel like the Ripmo is a little too close...

The Smuggler is a sick bike. Tahnee makes it look fun, but she makes anything look fun.

Like I said a page or two back, I've always wanted the Scout.

Might be needing to pick up a new fork for my fathom, and suggestions beyond the usual standards for 120-140 in travel?

I'm currently running a Fox 36 at 140 on a rocky thunderbolt and its been great. By usual standards do you mean more commonly used options (Fox/RS)?

The fork scene seems to have really expanded. You've got DVO, Cane Creek, MRP, Ohlin's, and Marzocchi in the game. I've heard nothing but good things about the Cane Creek and MRP options. I've heard DVO is can be a bit tough to set right because it's so adjustable in terms of low/high speed rebound and what not. Ohlin's just had a major recall because they forgot to add loc-tite on their forks (and they're also in bed with specialized - gross). Marzocchi is basically just Fox but cheaper because it doesn't say "Fox"

Really comes down to budget. All forks are expensive but when you get up into the 34 or 36 or Lyrik RC2 you'll be paying a pretty penny. Could be worth giving the smaller guys a shot.

Thanks fot the responses to my last query.

I have a set of bontrager line elite 30 wheels with an internal width of 29mm do you think I can't fit some 2.4wt dhr II's on them?

Honestly thats a pretty ideal combo. I have 30mm internal width rims and I run a Magic Mary 2.6 up front and a DHF 2.5 on the back and its great.

saving for a new bike next spring but my budget is not crazy high so im thinking used

go my eyes on a custom 2010 transition bottle rocket custom

t has 160mm up front and 130 rear

tell me what u think ns

The bottletocket is a classic. Lots has changed since 2010 though in terms of bike geo and what not. What will you be riding most? If you want a bike that'll pedal up the bottlerocket may not be your bike. It's more of a down only bike. That travel front/rear seems a bit bizarre as well, but I mean hey it could work. I honestly love the bottlerocket though, so badass.

If you're buying used just be cautious. There can be some real scumbags out there who will sell a bike with a cracked frame or seized fork or shock so just be aware.

Other than that, all the best in the hunt. Do your research and buy a bike that will work for what you plan to do!
