How do people here think about skinny bridges?
When I ask people around the Kootenays about trails that have a ton of skinnies, they cringe and tell me how they hate tiny bridges and go on an hour long rant about the stupidity of their existence, how dangerous they are and how trails should be wide opened, machine groomed with motocross style table top jumps with ride arounds. Then they point me to a weed infested, half demolished flat trail with one 4 foot long skinny with moss growing on it and the trail has absolutely no flow to it.
Personally, I fucking LOVE log rides, skinnies and high bridges. Those stunts take real balance skills and the time of "being in that moment" lasts so much longer than a 50 foot booter that you get 3 feet of air. The trail lasts so much longer because you CANT ride that style of trail at 40mph and when you crash, you dont break your collar bone, the spine or ribs. Looking at the architecture is like looking at a practical piece of art...
[RANT] I wonder if the freeride aspect of mtb has gotten to a point that no one likes hard things to do. All they want is to get on their 5,000$ bike and ride nothing but green trails, without skill and without having to actually practice. Casing a table top is easy, doing a 6 foot drop...thats way too much to ask for. Like in skiing; if you cant fucking ride, then dont come down this way should be applied. But nooooo, they have to complain to the association that because they cant physically ride this trail so this trail should not exist at all. Of course, people who run associations are all business leaders that think enduro should dominate. Sorry, I cant affort those bikes [/RANT]
This fall, I want to start building a trail with nothing but mandatory skinnies, high bridges and drops weaving through a cedar forest. I found the perfect location to scope, but sadly I have to work away from home this entire summer. I left in May and wont be coming home until september. There are no land claims, 2km hike on a lost forest service road so I shouldnt have any trouble. You guys know of the flying circus? Im going to aim so something like that...but not 30 feet up. I cant wait to get my chainsaw roaring!

I rode it Sunday. Parked at 7am. Saw 2 people on the climb, zero the rest of the way until I made it back to the parking lot where there were a lot of people getting ready to ride it. Really fun time.

So I just finished 8 months on ship and am keen to get my bike up and running. What do you guys consider the essential maintenance for a dual suspension bike that has been sitting unloved for close to a year? I'm pretty clueless as to how to care for modern mountain bikes as my dad quit his bike mechanic job in the early 80s.

Depends on what you got for suspension. Normal maintenance consists of changing the oil, replacing the seals and overall inspection. Get that done by your local bike shop, they know what they are doing.
A trick that I heard is to flip the bike upside down for a day or 2. It prelubricates everything and you get to check for leaks. Go for a test ride and just check overall performance. If it feels slow, sticky or stiff; take it in to get it checked out. Modern suspension is quite finicky.
I got a Marzochhie 380 R2C2 2016 and it sits untouched all winter and rides great. It needs an oil change, but got no time for dat.

I've been a little nervous about the local shop, just because there's pretty limited mountain biking here in Cape Breton, but they're definitely better suited to this than I am. I've got a Specialized Rumour Expert (basically the Camber) from a few years back that's mostly stock so I'm assuming all the components are pretty standard - I believe the shock and fork were both Fox Float CTD.

Cape Breton is not exactly in the mtb scene. However, if your local shop is an authorized FOX dealer, they will have to send in the suspension for most maintenance. That means time and money. Get it sent in in the fall if you are worried about performance. I know changing the oil is a simple process if you have the tools and an instruction book.
The fox float CTD is a "set and forget" type of suspension. If you ride sand, wet or 300km every year; it would be recommended to take it to the bike shop and discussing options for maintenance. Skipping out on this will wear down your internal components and a shaking will occur (death of the suspension). But overall, FOX makes the best components in the world.
If your bike was used a lot by the previous owner, get your pivot bearings replaced. They may run you up a couple 100$, but its worth every penny. Your suspension will feel smoother and the bike will feel stiffer. My Devinci Wilson 2008 requires a bearing change every 2 years and I can feel the difference.
Last: dont trust the "dad" mechanic. My old man may be a marine chief engineer, but he knows fuck all about bikes.

It's amazing how few 2018 Scott Geniuses there are available for sale. I knew that they sold out quickly last year, but I figured at least a few would pop up for a nice discount given that MY19 are starting to come into the US.
I asked almost every shop around and not a single one has any MY18s, new or demos. Only MY19s. So much for getting a nice discount. Looks like I'll have to go new.

I'd look for a used road bike with some R6800 or any 11sp version of 105. Can't go wrong with either.

There's a 920 in Bakersfield, but it's almost new for a $500 premium over what I could get at my LBS for new with a 940. I know it has a nicer fork+carbon upper but that's not worth the extra $500 when I know I'll get that support in labor from my LBS in the long run.

-Get on youtube, buy a bunch of special tools/ replacement parts, and attempt to rebuild the shock and diagnose the issue yourself. With this option, there's a good chance you'll fuck up and bust your shock beyond repair or at least so much that you'll have to spend more at the shop than you originally would have. Unless you're very mechanically experienced and have a full shop at your disposal, I wouldn't consider this option.
-Take it to your lbs, potentially take a small financial hit for the rebuild, and have better peace of mind. If they look at it and it determine that its fine, they shouldn't charge you any money. My lbs even made an adjustment on my shock free of charge when i was having issues fitting it onto my frame after i had it serviced at another suspension specific shop.
