Hell yeah dude. I go to the local mountain bike trails and rip around. (Granted I'm in Ontario so nothing to gnarly! But me and my brothers do sweet drops and what not.) It's actually a super good exercise and builds core body strength. It is not a sport for those of you with tender gooches though. However, I would full on recommend it to everyone who wants to try it.

This guy (who is not me) is a boss.

And I want to get a CX rig again too, but that may have to wait...

N+1 is a real thing. I feel like I could use a nice hard tail right now but convincing my wife that I need something between a trail bike, a fat bike and a gravel bike would be too much.

just picked up a new patrol a few days ago. so stoked to be riding new places this season.

i've lived in WA my whole life but have pretty much never ridden in western WA. any recommendations?

Tiger Mtn in issaquah

Tokul West/East in issaquah

Galbraith in Bellingham

Chuckanut in Bellingham

Duthie Park in issaquah for a shit ton of dirtjumps

Black diamond

A shit ton of "unsanctioned" trail systems that are heads a tails better than pretty much any of the above mentioned trails... but you have to know the right people.

What kind of riding do you like? Have you looked at Evergreenmtb.org? it has all the info on the legal trails in the state.

i like built jumps/berms and don't mind climbing. basically anything other than straight up single track - i can ride that for days in central wa.

definitely checking on galbraith/tiger/duthie once they thaw out. it's so fucking snowy over here. i've had an assfull of this snow.

It's the easiest bike to manual/wheelie that I've ever ridden. I can't wait to take it out on a trail ride.

kinda just started casually building a trail. Lower section i was working on today. roll down the rock and kinda goes off through those trees to the left and then hangs a left

Bruh you have no idea how lucky you are to have digable dirt. 9.5k feet up everything is just rock with dust it seems :(

nice! you'll be stoked on 1x. sexy fork. i would upgrade the shock though. whats components you have on it?

Why do you suggest upgrading the shock? It's a "2016 Fox Float DPS Factory with EVOL air can" I don't know much about the quality of shocks these days, but I thought that anything off the DPS series was the "best" float shock that Fox made? What would you suggest?

Fox DOSS dropper (gotta get used to the dual action lever). The guy gave me an extra set of Stan's wheels that I am probably going to throw on it. It came with Sun Ringle Inferno 25 wheels, whatever those are (I can't find much good info on them). It's 1x10 including a one-up industries 40 tooth. It's got XT or XTR everything except for the brakes, which are Deore. Upgrading the brakes (and swapping the wheels) was the only thing I was thinking about upgrading for now.

I'm going to have to get used to not having that super low gearing of a 3x for when I'm needing to pedal at high speeds. Probably going to buy some of that 3m clear vinyl tape, and cuss at myself while i figure out how to cover my carbon frame in it.

I'll try for the clicky picture again here.

Also, I'm definitely not used to riding such wide bars. I'm used to narrow bars, and never caught on to that wide-bar fad. I grew up riding in the redwoods, where wide bars meant clipping your bars on a tree. Probably going to cut them down just a little bit.

dude I get this. Coming from track bikes, where i had 36cm wide road drops, the wide bars are quite a change. even my last two mountain bikes had like 690mm bars and those seemed wide. 785 is crazy to get used to

What size is your chain ring? an 11-40 cassette should be enough spread for anything if you're not racing. If you do need higher gears just buy a bigger chain ring.

i mean it depends on what kind of riding you do. i prefer i a higher volume air can (monarch plus, fox float x2) because i like steep fast techy decents and jumps. something that can handle a little more. definitely get some new brakes. (XT or Sram guide). im a sucker for SRAM so i would go sram

Being that he set it up to climb better for his wife, I'm pretty sure the sprocket is 30t and the rear One-Up Industries is a 42. Does that make sense?

Gotcha. That makes sense. It sounds like we basically have a similar same style of riding. I'm not sure that there is enough space in the frame to fit an x2 because of the extra CO2 chamber on the x2 though. Isn't the point of the EVO cartridge to provide more volume? Either way, this shock will be a yuuuge improvement over my non-kashima RP23.

Ya, I'm definitely upgrading my brakes. I haven't ridden the Guide. I like the stopping power of the XT, but I'm not a huge fan of how it modulates, and I'm defintiely a one-finger brake kind of guy. These Deore brakes actually don't ride too bad, but I'd prefer the XT over them for sure. I'll probably stick with Shimano because it already has the XT levers and icetek rotors... and the rest of the bike is XT or XTR. If I could afford it, I'd upgrade the wheels too, but the Stan's will be pretty good I think, so that's further down the line.

In my experience, bar width is very similar to saddle width or frame size- one size doesn't work for everyone. Wide bars will give you more leverage in turns and better control & stability over the front end (think of doing a push up- is it easier or harder when your hand width is too narrow? But, your shoulder width should be the ultimate determining factor- go wide but not wider than your own shoulders can manage. A smaller guy like Sam Hill will run 740-760mm bars, and a tall, broad guy like Minnaar is around 802mm. If Sam ran 800mm bars, it would cause his hand width to be too wide for his shoulders to support and it would actually cause him to get tired more quickly, or develop cramping between his shoulder blades.

In short, go wide but let your shoulder width be one of the main determining factors in how wide you should go.

I like the push up analogy. Makes lots of sense. I'm about 5'8 and am running 780. Could probably go down to 760, but I personally like wider. @thelorax you are on the shorter side yeah? What size bars are on there now?

Thoughts on a nomad vs Bronson? Debating between the two for pretty much exclusively summit county riding, with maybe some Moab/fruita stuff occasionally. I would definitely go nomad but I want to go ride with my dog a lot so I'm concerned about the uphill ability

Shit, I know this dilemma well...I spent a whole lot of time, nearly 6 months, deciding between a Nomad and a Bronson.

I was able to ride several Nomad CC's with and without Enve's, over most of the worthwhile trails here in the Issaquah area; Predator and OTG laps at Tiger, bouncing all over Tokul East and West, testing the climbing abilities at Grand Ridge, and the obligatory ride it like you stole it laps at Duthie.

With the Bronson, I was able to secure a Bronson CC X01 with Easton ARC wheels for an indefinite period of time, which for me was 3 solid weeks of beating the shit out of it anywhere and everywhere I possibly could before I had reached a decision.

In short, the Nomad is an amazing bike that can pretty much ride anything. If you want to steamroll obstacles and straightline tech sections where line choice is an afterthought, the Nomad is the better choice over the Bronson. I didn't feel most of the larger obstacles when I rode the Nomad, I was able to hit sections of trail I normally am more cautious of, and selective of my lines, with a new confidence. The bike improved my confidence on several trails immediately as the bike naturally puts you in a perfect descending position (assuming you set your suspension correctly). The Nomad does has a minimum speed limit however; the faster you go the more fun it is, while the slower you go the more you realize you would be having more fun on a different bike. It is not a bike I would personally choose for mellow singletrack trails, or for any trails with substantial and/or steep climbing; it wasn't fun enough to inspire me to ride harder and faster in those environments. The Nomad can definitely climb, although a much more relaxed, enjoy the scenery, type of climbing style of riding seemed to be the best from what I experienced. You wouldn't buy a Nomad with the expectations of it being a fun bike to climb with anyways, its the downhill that counts.

The Bronson however, is a sneaky little fucker. It has 15mm less rear travel, and 1 degree steeper head tube angle, yet rides like two different beasts, one that travels down and one that travels up. Sure, it cannot take the same kind of careless approach to a rock garden as the Nomad, but what it lacks there is made up in it's ability to be nimble. The bike loves to go fast and change direction, and can intuitively do so when asked. The descending capabilities of the Bronson are impressive to say the least, the bike will go where asked with no question. I found the Nomad to soak up everything but not always necessarily in a good way. The Bronson was able to pump and be more playful in all of the same locations I found the Nomad to lack those same characteristics. With that said, the Bronson's descending abilities still are not quite up to par with what the Nomad is capable of (but look what Danny Macaskill does on a 140mm 5010...moot point right?), yet this is where the Bronson runs away...uphill. The Bronson can climb, not in a sit, spin, and suck it up style like it's big brother the Nomad, but this bike can climb much better than it's numbers and geometry would leave you to believe. During the first week of riding the Bronson demo I had, I was able to destroy both climbing and descending PR's multiple times on every single trail I rode at compared to my main bike at the time, a 2016 Sworks Stumpy 29er.

In the end, the Nomad was better for a smaller percentage of the riding I did where the Bronson was more fun to ride everywhere I went. I knew that I was sold on the Bronson during my first ride with it. Sure, I wish I had gotten the Nomad a few times a year where riding something slacker and with more travel sounds fun, but I wouldn't ever trade my Bronson for a Nomad.

Yeah I'm gonna order a C Bronson with the R build kit as soon as my current bike sells. Probably gonna order a rock shox reverb dropper as well since that's pretty much the only thing in the nicer build kit that I really care about

If you plan on getting the reverb anyways, you should just get the S build. The seat post is already nearly 400$, for the extra 600$ you get a serious upgrade in the fork, brakes, and drive train. Just saying.

Alright you bike nerds, your boy needs your help/opinions....

Planning on buying a bike in the very near future and I'm pretty set (still open to suggestions) on a used Yeti SB66 on pinkbike. I live and do most of my riding in Florida (yes you can actually ride full suspension bikes here), but I take multiple trips a year to AL, GA, TN, the Carolinas, and maybe up to snowshoe wv this spring.

I've been going back n forth on a few couple bikes and weighing out the pros n cons of each one, but i'm honestly not the best with the whole component/specs/mechanic side of bikes....hence why i'm coming to all you bike nerds for advice. I know a 150-160mm travel bike isn't all that necessary for the riding I'll be doing but then again it'll give me more confidence/bigger balls to not be a pussy and go full turbo. Also a dropper post would be sick, but I wouldn't be upset about not having one right away and buying one later down the road.

With all that said i'm hoping to negotiate prices a little with these bikes and i'm trying to keep it with $1500-1800 range. I'm planning on having this next bike for the next few years and will be making some upgrades here n there. These are a few of the bikes i'm leaning towards, so let me know what you guys think would be the better deal based on parts and whatnot.

+100

It's not hard to replace a broken dropper cable in the field if necessary, but when your Reverb develops a vacuum from lifting the bike by the seat, good luck bleeding that in the field.

I personally can't stand Reverbs, and refuse to put hydraulic dropper posts on any of my bikes. I swapped out the brand new Reverbs from my latest bikes and sold them for Command Post IRCC's from Specialized.

I'm considering running a Race Face Turbine on my current project as it comes in a 150mm travel size that Specialized has yet to offer. Heard a lot of good things but haven't been able to test one out.

i had the command post on the carbon stumpy i used to have. The thing i didnt like about it was there were only 3 positions. also, the remote started to get pretty finicky after awhile. i have a 125mm reverb stealth for my new niner...but kinda want a 150mm, so if anyone has a 150mm reverb stealth get at me

Sounds like the old command post, new one has 12 total positions. For me personally, I'm either riding at the extreme top or bottom positions anyways, so the extra 10 positions don't see much use.

Was the remote on top of the handlebar? If so, that's why. All of the new "single ring" levers that sit where your shifter would keep them out of harms way and have better barrel adjustment capabilities to make it easier to keep cable tension in check.

What diameter reverb are you after?

Anybody on here using the Float X2 with climb switch? I'm highly debating putting one on my Hightower, and curious how well the CS works.

alright been on a few rides of varying terrain with this bitch now. i fucking love it. the suspensions about dialed in as well where i'd like it to be and its insane. Handles the downhills like a freeride bike and on the climbs it has a similar geometry/reach to my trackbike oddly so it feels really at home.

10/10 nomad worth the money

In your guys opinion what is a better deal/bike. I found a used 2015 Giant reign advanced 0 for 3k and a 2016 kona process 153DL for 2400$. Both are in pretty good condition, but the kona is in slightly better condition. No issues with front fork stanchion on either bike, no dents, just cosmetic rubs and scratches on both bikes.

What groupset are each running? Suspension set-up?

Honestly, if I were looking for a complete as my next set-up, I would be looking pretty seriously at a Process 111 (or other aggressive 29er). I've never been a big Goant fan, but don't have any good reason for it.

I'd go for the Kona and if you need/want some upgrades (definitely a dropper), use the money you saved for that. Or go on a sweet road trip or something.

https://m.pinkbike.com/buysell/2062832/ here is the link to the Giant. It seems like a good deal but I can't tell if it's TOO good of a deal to be true. Bicycle Bluebook has it valued for a little more so I can't tell if he just has it super priced to sell or is trying to scam. He has sold multiple bikes before on pinkbike. Does anyone here have any thoughts?
