Where'd you ride today? Another ridiculously sunny day on the bike today in this summer of nothing but sun.

How often do you actually use that swat cage thing? Seems pretty cool in concept.

SWAT = Stores Weed And Treats right? At least in this state it does...

At first glance when I originally demo'd the 2016 Stumpy back in May, I thought it was neat, and original, but nothing other than a gimmick that adds 200 grams to the frame. After getting a few rides in on my own 2016 Stumpy now, and after today's adventure, I am definitely sold on the concept and will utilize it more on longer rides.

I'll use today as my example as it was my first real usage of the SWAT storage unit and the SWAT wraps. Today's plan was a larger local ride just under 20 miles with 3500' of forest road climbing in 6 miles after the intial 6.whatever miles of gravel road to the start of the climb all before topping out and getting ready to descend.

I always ride with a hydration pack anyways, but needed to plan for a longer ride in the 80-90+ degree temps. So I was able to use the SWAT wraps to store a tube and additional tools inside my downtube, which allowed more space in my pack for food and water, which was a damn good thing with the heat in the mountains today. And I did throw an extra bottle in the cage since it was just sitting there empty anyways. Good call as we did need the extra water in the end.

It's not for everyone, just like the included chainbreaker tool inside my top cap does nothing for me, but it definitely comes in handy in certain situations and I will try and use it more in the future. Shit, with the tube and tools already inside and on the bike (chaintool in the top cap, and a multi tool that sits in spot above the rear shock, I don't need to carry anything but food/water in my pack on long rides which is a huge plus.

I'm going 1x11. Any tips and or recommendations for a chain ring? Size, brand. ect? BTW im running some x7 cranks at the moment.

I've had nothing but great luck with Race Face's Narrow Wide chainrings. I have many of their rings, 30t/32t/34t in both bolt on and direct mount applications. I don't bother looking anywhere else for chainrings.

I have two bikes with 30t chainrings and 10-42t cassettes and one bike with a 32t chainring and 10-42t cassette. Your ideal chainring size will need to based on your riding ability/stamina and what the climbing requirements are in your area.

What's the appeal of the 11 speed?

You're really not gaining that much by jumping up an extra cog.

Your lowest will still probably be 36 (unless you go up on, wolftooth, etc.) and your highest will be 11 - same range as a 10 speed.

You will get one extra midrange gear for a helluva lot more expense...

The appeal is losing the least effective and most problematic piece on a modern bicycle, the fucking front derailleur. Not to mention cleaning up space on the handlebars for a dropper post, or losing .5-1.0lb in weight when converting, or having all of the gears you will use on one shifter rather than carrying the 2x10 setup and only using 13 or 14 of those gears.

Have you even ridden a 1x11 drivetrain? I'm curious as most people new to the concept are exceptionally critical and hesitant. Understandably so, but for real, just give it a try as I'm sure you'll be surprised.

As mentioned directly above, I do have 3 bikes with 1x11 drivetrains all running Sram's 10-42t cassettes, and I won't ever transition back to a front derailleur for mountain biking. I live in Washington State and climb as often as I can. More 1x11 for me please...!

13470952:RockShoxTora said:
You can also get a 10-42 10 speed cassette!

The typical 11 speed cassettes are still 11-32/11-36 unless you're willing to shell out an arm and a leg.

You don't have too many affordable options for rear mech/shifter either.

I think the tech is cool, and maybe it will catch on once it's become more affordable.

For the time being, I, like yourself, can't warrant the expense. There hasn't been much that my 1x10 couldn't conquer (11/36 w/ 32 front). Just makes you a stronger rider!

Now if you were comparing a 9 speed to an 11 speed, the gains are huge. 10 to 11, I just don't see it.

Sram's new GX line brings 1x11 wide range cassette with a clutch derailleur and the remainder of the drivetrain; crank, BB, shifter, chain, and chainring for $564 MSRP. For people moving on from 3x9, 2x10, 1x10 setups, especially those not running clutch rear derailleurs, this is a huge upgrade at not much cost. Obviously you could possibly use an existing crank/bb setup and find a cheaper chainring than Sram's, but this technology is here to stay and will only become cheaper and spec'd on more new bikes.

I'm curious what 11 speed mountain cassettes are you seeing that are 11-32 or 11-36? I just searched quickly and didn't see anything for mountain bikes.

Ended up just booking around soaring eagle for an hour or two cause I had some family stuff to do. The Spartan is an absolute bear there, haha.

That's pretty neat. I would love to eliminate a pack from my riding entirely, who knows what we might get in the future.

You are wrong, 11 spd cassettes either come in 10-40 or 10-42. And they also have affordable options now. Sram has a pricepoint groupset and Shimano has recently released 11spd XT (This one is great because you do not have to have a special freehub body. Normal 9,10 spd freehubs are compatible.

Also if you live in steep places like whistler for example your 32 x 11/36 just wouldn't cut it. Unless you are just a beast of a climber.

I climb daily in whistler and have 32-42 and it is perfect ratio for most climbs here.

And a main benefit from 10 to 11, would be, being able to run a larger chain ring to get a better top end while still maintaining your low end ratio from 10spd.

Oh man, the GMBN guys have picked up Canyon as a sponsor, along side Scott bikes now... Super jealous, their past week's worth of videos has shown them on SO many different bikes. I fucking wish!

On this I believe Shimano's 11spd cassettes come in 11-40 (XTR) and 11-42 (Deore XT) while SRAM's 11spd cassettes are 10-42 across all models. I'm just splitting hairs though.

had a fun ride in hood river yesterday from kingsley reservoir down through post canyon all the way to town. got super buck on the trail bike and ended up clearing this landing entirely

That bike is extreme overkill for soaring eagle.

Which trails are you riding there? I need to get back out there more. It's been nice without the nettles this year.

I understand the benefits of a 1x setup...

I run a 1x10 with clutch mexh on my current rig. Previous rig was a 1x9. The front dérailleur is garbage. I agree with you there.

Jump into google shopping and do a quick search for "11 speed mountain cassette." You'll see where I'm getting my quick reference numbers.

I did my 1x10 conversion + mech/shifter for all of $150. Race face, XT, Zee components. I priced out the equivalent 11 speed conversion a year or so ago when I went from 1x9 to 1x10 and the cost/benifit ratio just wasn't there.

Im not familiar with SRAM's GX line and a lot can happen in a year. Maybe my info is obsolete and my google search mislead me.

Thanks for the 1x11 answers!

And yea i think im going to purchase the race-face narrow wide with the rest being xt. I've just never had a good experience with SRAM.

Just converted to 1x11 (with my '16 Stumpy 650b) from a much more traditional drivetrain, let me say, it's fucking awesome. I love the simplicity and having less parts in general. I never see myself needing more gearing and the way it is set up fit's my style of riding really well. Also, I'm sure the other recent converts can attest to the badass ride of the new Stumpy's. My first 650b and I'm absolutely loving the wheel size, it's more fun for me than the 29'er I had. It's still fast as fuck too. Plus the Pike + Float CTD setup is so money. I've never had such quality suspension on a bike before and I'm truly realizing how much I've been missing out on all these years.

I'll be moving to bend Oregon in a couple months. Anyone know of any downhill in the area? Lots of xc, and bachelor bike park, but I wanna find some fast shit with minimal pedaling.

I think i might grab a 2015 Specialized Enduro 29er comp tomorrow. I can get a really good deal on it, and it seems like a bike that'd fit my terrain pretty darn well.

anyone ever been on one?

Just pedaling around on pavement, but no dirt. I've been seriously considering an Enduro to complement the new Stumpy. They are awesome bikes that fit perfectly out here for the guys that need big bikes and are actually pedaling to the top.

Where's the bike at and how much is it going for?

So I've always had a fantasy about owning a Kona Stinky since they're one of my all time favorite bikes, and there is an older one on the local Craigslist for $500 in eh condition. But I kinda want to purchase a new mountain bike first, something to do cross country riding and racing on before buying the Stinky or another downhill bike. What do you guys think I should do? Should I go ahead and buy the Stinky?

Dude, I was exactly the same way, I used to lust over those Stinkys so hard. mmmmmmm that 2008 Stinky Supreme ... I wanted it so bad.

Don't do it. Save your $$$ and buy something more modern and versatile. That one is not going to be much fun on any trail and looks reasonably beat...

At a shop near Bham - $2500. Id have to buy a dropper, but that would be the only upgrade i can imagine getting as literally everything on it is a significant step up from what im riding now haha. So all told + tax it would be right at $3k.

I really want a bike that i can start taking into rowdier terrain ie. the new tiger descending trail and shuttle trails around the area.

Im not coming up with many reasons not to pull the trigger.

Ive ridden one, but just around Duthie, so take my word lightly. Felt like a very point and shoot type bike. Plowed over everything I could throw at it (at duthie). Not particularly nimble, but it wasn't a slug either. Never felt like I had to work really hard to get through rough stuff. Not really my style, but not a clear negative. Only issue I had with it was climbing traction, which is weird for a long travel 29er. Not sure why I was slipping the rear wheel all over the place. I feel like my spartan climbs much better, even though it is significantly heavier. My 2 cents

Thinking super hard on whether or not I should buy this 2013 Kona Hei Hei at my local bike shop. I ride mostly single track/xc (and park but I have a dirt jumper for that), and it seems like a bike that will hold up. I test rode it today and I absolutely loved the feel of it. Has anyone had any experiences with this bike? Please give me some solid feedback

Bend, I love your warm sunny conditions, laid back vibe, miles of trails, copious amounts of quality beers and food as well as the endless amount of jumps and berms.

A quick rant and word of advice. If you suck at building jumps or are building on a clearly established and travelled singletrack/trail don't fucking do it. With that if you do plan on doing something talk to the trail crew/stewards before hand to.

Basically I've been looking after this 6KM XC track inside my town and sometime since Monday somebody built these really shitty lips down a section of trail, digging monster holes for dirt behind them. The worst part is, is that they're on a narrow part of singletrack with no place to pass them so you're force to roll over them and through the hole. You can't send them either because they all lack a landing along with them boosting your face into the trees...

Spent the first day at Phil's and rode up Ben's to the top, rode whatever "new" trail that wasn't on my map that's between Lower Whoops and Phil's down and back up to the clearing and obvious beer drinking/bowl smoking hangout spot, then rode Phil's from the top all the way back to the lot. I think there's only one or two trails remaining at Phil's that I haven't been on now.

Second day shuttled to Wanoga rode Tiddlywinks back down to the highway and planned on riding the road 4 miles back up to the sno-park to ride down Funner but ran out of time, so we instead jumped across the road and hit COD and it's all it's singletrack and rock garden glory all the way until it ended back on the highway. After riding the first few berms/jumps on Tiddlywinks I determined I will be back soon to ride that one a few more times as well as getting equal time on Funner.

Got shafted on the timing this go around, but still ended up with about 40 miles of riding packed into 2 days. I'll be going back down at least once more in the next 6 weeks to continue checking off trails remaining on my list.

So much to ride and do down there, I can't get enough.

Speaking of amateur hour some construction group has literally fucking destroyed the inner city trail to install fiber-optic cable. It used to be some nice prairie hillside with a great technical trail on it and now it's a construction zone... Really bummed because it was the place that kind of taught me a lot about mountain biking over the past 5 years. I've gone from being some skinny nerd of a kid to what I feel like is a level of real athleticism.

Looking forward I'll be bombarding the city council along with some other locals to get permits in place so that we can go and dig the trail back in and set it up to be something equivalent to that of an current UCI XCO track. I'll be fucking pissed if they don't award us anything though, and if it comes to that then honestly I'll just dig anyways.

Anyways RIP Hanbury. Hanbury 2.0 will hopefully happen.

Then I recounted my cassette and found that I actually have a 9 speed cassette and I just spent 60 dollars on a 10 speed shifter. My dad always used to tell me to measure twice and cut once, but I just wouldn't listen.

Well now I've spent another 60 on a new cassette. Why the hell not.

Bought the lady friend a Norco Truax for her birthday the other day! She's a rippin skier but has never really mountain biked before. She has plenty of confidence, but just doesn't really know how to translate that into "feel on a bike" yet. I'm sure it will come with time and practice, but she's already taking to the flow trails like a champ.
