Official mountain biking thread

Those Knolly's are so dope, Here is an edit I shot on our local trails last year

going to go film an edit for two scott riders tomorrow so hopefully i will be able to get some screen shots or something for you guys before we release the final edit.

Going to be renting a dh rig for $30ish bucks a day with lift pass included or will find a way to bum bikes. Would like to buy a affordable old dh rig but I can't find shit for anything in a large frame.

Same trails you were mentioning earlier? If so, get a picture of a section of trail or something, no action necessary. This thread needs more stoke than words alone.

been riding a lot around PC, especially now that the lifts are spinning. here are my two whips:

Scott Voltage. Flat rear tire cause I shred too hard.

Giant Glory (on the chair at DV)

problem is i'll never like biking anywhere near as much as skiing, so its just like passing the time...

who has done a ghetto tubeless conversion? whats the best way to approach it, gorilla tape the rim or split tube method?

Only works if you have a pretty much brand new wheel set. Split tube. Lots of stans. Split the tube and get the tire on before you trim the excess rubber.

Does anyone ride at snow summit bike park in socal? ? I am going tomorrow, it's always fun to do a run or 2 with new people.

I lurk Pinkbike daily, but don't have an account. Never saw the need as I typically just read the interesting articles and watch videos.

i know, i know. the past few times iv gone since starting this thread it has been pissing rain and iv not felt like stopping/not been riding with my phone on me. no service out where we are riding so no point really.

Finally got around to posting my bike. I've had it for about a month ,couldn't be happier with how it turned out. This is from the day I picked it up. I'll post more pictures when I take a few more out riding.

Specs?

And a larger picture perhaps?

Finally got to do some biking out by mt hood. Camped two nights on the river off hwy 35 and did a good 3+ hour ride on surveyors ridge to cooks meadow. super fun loamy singletrack that I just randomly pulled over and rode up. nice surprise! saw some moose and deer as well. not a super fast trail, but really rolly and weavy.

on the way back down to Portland I hit up Sandy Ridge for the first time. That place is so sick and it's not much more than an hour out of the city. pretty rainy and muddy and the route we took found everything from little rock drops to table tops and berms to wide open haulin' ass traverses. super super fun!

My bad, that was horrible picture and post. I took another and uploaded it a different way.

716725.jpeg

The frame is a surly instigator 2.0 and it has a bunch of race face components.

It's a 27.5 build, a friend at my LBS built the wheels because it was cheaper than any for sale.

Race face seat post, stem, and bars. Race face crank, ring, and bash set up 1x10. Rock Shox reba, I think it's 120mm travel. Sram x9 shifter and x7 rear derail. I honestly can't remember the exact models of a lot of the components. WTB vigilante's set up tubeless, which have been awesome for me if anyone is looking for tires.

Would taking people who haven't mountain biked too much to Sandy Ridge kill them, or can they be entertained for a while?

Lower hide and seek trail would be good, maybe flow motion as well. it gets more gnar the higher up you go.

imo you should take a trip to hood river and go to the family man staging area at post canyon, thats the best beginner trail area that i can think of

Unfortunately that's outside my permitted range.

I'm going to try to do this again because it didn't work the first time.....

Thinking about a single speed conversion, how hard is it to do myself?

That is a bike I would love. Its a street bike. It covers the range of trials, street, park and DJ.

i dont know if the camp will allow it because admission is $15, but look into the lumberyard (massive indoor mtb park in ne portland)

also eichler park in beaverton has a variety of dirt jumps that are currently being rebuilt (completed within the next couple months), may be outside your range though

my first bike looked like that, pretty much an all mountain hardtail meant for dirt jumping/light freeride and trails.

Yeah, check out the lumberyard, I have a buddy that works there, it's supper rad.

Also my first bike was like that too

I'm looking to get more into all-mountain riding and pedaling. I've ridden a lot of DH lately but just recently sold my 2013 Demo 1. I'm torn between 3 bikes right now: the specialized enduro, transition covert, and santa cruz nomad. The transition is #1 on my list right now but I'm having trouble trying to find one in a size M. (I'm 5'11" 155lbs is M the right size?) Can you guys give me the pros and cons of each of the bikes? Also, what would be the advantages of buying a 650b vs a 26?

Thanks

Trek X-Cal 9 completely stock. I race cross country, and do zero DH. This things destroys even though its aluminum. I work at a local bike and ski shop and another friend/employee just built his new trek fuel ex 9.8, it's honestly one of the coolest and best bikes i've ridden, and I only gave it a test ride, heres a pic of it:

They look so cool. Definitely will upgrade to an EX or Superfly when I outgrow the X-Cal. (Note: I am a young child so can't wait to upgrade.)

I'll be back in town in the next few weeks and am thinking about bringing a bike to check out what Eastwood has become since the road split the golf course. Is there a specific loop or direction that rides the best?

sounds like a question for your doctor

I saw him today, forgot to ask, Nurse answered who I usually talk to when I call, she said at 3 months you should be ready. But I don't know if she heard the word mountain when I said mountain biking, because I am cleared for regular biking.

Just trying to get any other NSers experiences with this. I will probably try to call next week and ask. But I think after 4-5 months I will be good to go.

Please don't. Eastwood sucks so hard. I guess go if you must, but check out gamehaven. park in the lot off the gravel road and go up over the levee. Much shorter, but a better trail, although not super exciting. PM if you need any info

Triple post but screw it. Typical? Hard to say. I race "elite" in my series and it's usually 23-28 miles. Elevation varies, it's usually a lot though.

There are trails at Gamehaven? Shit, I was just thinking of checking out Eastwood for nostalgia if anything. Are they worth checking out or not really?

Anything else that you personally recommend in the area? I've lived in Winona and Red Wing and am familiar with Memorial Park and Holzinger's Lodge. Most of the biking I did in Rochester was on trails that are not open to biking anymore (ever), plus private trails just outside of town.

Yeah just check out gamehaven. Kinda confusing though.

Red wing's always great. Mt. kato is always really fun, and personally one of my favorites if you're willing to do a 1:45 drive to get there and ""pay"" 8 dollars.

unless you wanna go to the cities, that's about it.

The only good part of the riding I used to do in town was that I could just ride from home. With all of the bike trails that circumnavigate that city, it was super easy to get across town to ride some trails or jumps. That's the only thing I miss about that shit hole of a city. Things are not like that in most of the other places I've been to. We used to easily put in 50 mile + days riding to and from trails back and forth from the south to north and back.

There are tons of bootleg trails built all over those bike trails as well if you are ever pedaling around town and get bored. Out by Zumbro soccer fields for instance, there was a massive step up likely built by bmx'ers, just 10 feet off the paved bike trail.

I'll look into Gamehaven. I'm still not entirely sure I want to drive with a bike or not, but the thought of riding my former trails intrigues me.

Eastwood is really that bad now? I mean it was never good, but was always fun to haul ass on featureless singletrack.

for right now, absolutely nothing. But I live right on the border of illanois and wisconsin. I'm looking to get into some WORS races, and we have a few local ones.

If you or anyone you know is looking for a pretty decently challenging race get to this. There is a 11 and 22 mile race, but they are technical and challenging.

It's called the blockhouse roll. this year will be the 19th year. My dad and a bunch of his friends formed a group years ago. Numbers have been struggling, but should be big this year. If you end up going, I will be amongst o the group of "free flight" riders. With a green and black x-cal. Don't be afraid to say hi.

Wors races can be intense. I've only done 1, but damn. You're a little too far to do any MNMBS races I guess. That platteville race looks cool though - i might check it out come October.
