Hey NS! Thought this would be a good idea to start this thread, being a jazz musician myself. Feel free to post vids or whatever of yourself or band playing some jazz. If this thread does well I will post some of myself for sure. Have fun.

I've been playing guitar for about 6 years, but I've been mainly jazz guitar for 2 years now. Also play alto sax. Been in a Count Basie mood for like a week.

Good to know there are some fellow jazz dudes on NS. I'm a drummer myself studying music at Chico State right now.

Here are a couple tunes from a funk/jazz band that I played with over the last year:

This thread is pointless without

EPIC SAX MAN

I wish i knew how to play some Jazz piano. All of you Jazz pianists, how did you all get started? Also, the musicians community on NS is much larger than I though. Maybe a cult is a possibility?

I play in a band that mostly play's alternative however we taught ourselves how to play Guthrie Govan's cover of Spain. It's fun to play.

i play bass and i really want to get better at jazz guitar

i prefer playing electric bass opposed to upright but i still try to get the tone as 'uprighty' as possible to keep things a bit tastier

latin and funk grooves are my shit and here are some of my favorite tunes to jam to. all done with my school's jazz ensemble

dope latin madness

no embed for this, sorry. such a classic song

might seem a little out of place but it was a jazz arrangement and playing really vocal bass lines over it was so easy. i pretty much did mellow solos the entire time while still holding a groove haha

haha i dont really know all that much about jazz admittedly, but ive been stoked on this track lately, even though its only half jazz. Youll want a good system if you listen to it.

I'm surprised that theres this many players on ns. i play tenor in jazz band, get a few solos here and there, but i don't play out of school.

I was playing "freddie freeloader' last night with some homies, but I'm not formally trained in jazz at all. Wish I was :-/

don't need to outside of school. i used to play guitar before sax, so i pick up stuff really easy. not to sound cocky, but I'm pretty much the best player in my grade.

ya this year i reached a plateau so i can't really bring myself to practice as much its frustrating when u don't get better. That being said i improved a lot before that

Do I hear Jazz Cult? I've played tenor saxophone for a few years, both jazz and classical in a few different groups, but I didn't get serious about it until a bit over a year ago.

I'm joining this thread! I've been playing the sax for 5 years and more recently the bari sax (the past 3). I fucking love it. I've been in the same jazz course at school for two years and I have one year left as well as I've been asked to join the All-Star band for my city. Been to the nationals twice, etc. all that jazz.

Can I take the bari spot in the big band?

ya sounds like we could have a few sax players and a couple bari's and tenor several trumpeters and guitarists, a bass player and a drummer. boom bomb connect

What city's All-Star Band are you in? I throw down on bari whenever I get the chance, but I guess you can take that spot.

I play trumpet! I'm a sophomore in HS. NS big band would be so sick! I want to start a combo, but I don't really know where to start.

Threads let me get in this. I play tenor sax in the Garfield jazz band, been playing for going on 7 years. I can post some clips in a bit when I'm not on mobile. Just curious, for all my saxophone players out there, what setups are you guys on? I'm playing a 1946 conn 10m that I just bought off one of the other bandmembers (stoked!), with a hard rubber link at a 7 opening on vandoren java 3s. Anyways, I'm pumped to see there are other jazz players on this site. I wouldn't expect the newschool skiing world to have too many jazz players.

You guys kill it at competitions, at least the ones I've seen you guys play at. I'm on a 1958 King Zephyr with a Lakey 7*3, but I'll probably be switching to a Jody Jazz mouthpiece in the near future. As for reeds, I'm starting to like playing on Vandoren Classical 2.5s instead of Javas. Also, just joined the cult.

^Nice! I checked out a few zephyrs and some selmers, super balanced actions and mark vis mainly, as well as a buffet super dynaction and a chu before I went with the 10m. I just love the free-blowingness and depth of tone of the vintage conns, and for a little extra dough, why not go with the 10m over the chu? Anyways, what comps were you guys at this year? I might have seen you perform?

No doubt, I had the privilege of playing on a 10m for a bit and I couldn't believe the sound that came out of it. However, I thought it was a bit too hard to get around on for my liking on classical pieces. To each his own. Anyway, I'm in the jazz band at Bainbridge High School which is god awful with the exception of the majority of the saxophone section, so I would be surprised if you had heard us perform. We only competed at the Bellevue Jazz Festival this year, but I heard both bands II and III perform there and at Viking. Good stuff.

Im not in it yet, but it's kind of like the youth all-star band (still kicking around in high school)...Hamilton, Ontario.

Yeah, see I don't play classical so that's why I went 10m. But yeah I don't think I've seen you guys... I'll make sure to look next festival I'm at , which will be next year because we just played our last outreach concert.

i noticed that ur from mn, do u ever take classes at umn or see concerts cause my hs teacher just moved there to become head of jazz studies his name is jason squinobal keep an eye out for him if u do
