In honor of the high school class mate who thought Alaska was the country north of the US. Post your random facts about places you have visited and where they appear on a map. (Ski resorts and trail maps are part of this). Or post any interesting geography fact.

Ill start if off with my trip to the Bay of Islands on the northern tip of lake Huron in Ontario, Which just so happens to be in Canada, which just might be the country north of the United States.

Also Alaska is a State not a Country for those who are confused.

Lets help a fellow newschooler win a geography bee some day!

The Bay of Pigs does not actually have pigs in it.

MN fun fact

Minnesota is known as The Land of 10,000 Lakes and officially there are 11,842 lakes more than ten acres (40,000 m²) in size. The prevalence of lakes has generated many repeat names. For example, there are more than 200 Mud Lakes, 150 Long Lakes, and 120 Rice Lakes. All but four Minnesota counties (Mower, Olmsted, Pipestone and Rock) contain at least one natural lake. Minnesota's lakes provide 44,926 miles of shoreline, more than the combined lake (~32,000 mi) and coastal (3,427 mi) shorelines of California.

If I didn't live in Canada I might find that impressive.

Youre wrong alaska is a country, not a state

Wait, I thought Alaska was part of Russia? Or is it just that you can see Russia from Alaska?

Ottowa is the capital of Canada. I'd bet 99% of Americans don't know that.

Hell, is located in southern Nevada near the border of California and Arizona.

holla at olmsted. I live in Rochester in that county and the biggest lake we have in town is Silver Lake, or as I like to call it, Shit Lake. All the damn Canada geese come to Rochester for the winter because the lake stays warm (the power plant drains into the lake and keeps it warm throughout the year). It's fucking gross and Canadian Geese are fucking disgusting, all they do is shit in and around it and harass anyone nearby.

When I was in Thunder Bay probably 5ish years ago, most of the Canadians I spoke to knew where Rochester was due to the fact all their geese went there. Pretty cool to have people know of my city besides it being known for having the Mayo Clinic (which is significant, don't get me wrong).

Interesting thread. Geography is one of my passions, especially when it comes to maps and locations. hope it stays active.

I think Wisconsin has like 13,000. Why don't we get a slogan?...

Because Wisconsin considers a bird bath a lake while Minnesota requires they be over 10 acres before calling them a lake.

I had to compete against the kid who would go on to win the National Geography Bee in Washington State... He turned out to be a genius so none of us had a bloody chance in hell
