Official Coffee Thread

but for now i'll stick with my $100 french press set up and laugh at people who have those crazy all-in-one auto machines and are drinking an inferior cup of coffee!

can't wait until I can afford a good espresso machine and dive into that world. It's way more "sciencey" than press pot.

Just finished an entire pot of Tim Hortons I picked up on the way home from Sunday River yesterday. God I wish Timmy's was farther south :(

I took an artsy picture of the cup and coffee grounds but it looked like shit, so deal with a pic-less post.

this isn't a super-auto, but it's cheaper than most, has the PID thermoblock grouphead so you'll have consistent temp between pulls, and as mentioned, programmable pre-infusion is something even 3000-4000 dollar machines don't regularly offer.

in other news, I get to work on a slayer this week, stoked to fuck with a paddle machine.

I think *he meant superauto, I shouldn't post when I'm drunk. I don't even know anything anymore right now.

I did got to play with this thing last week.

I had a massive boner the entire time.

I've been looking for a grinder for my locker at uni. Thought this would be a good place to get some input.

I've got a little porcelain pour over thing that i use paper filters on.

For grinding I have this P.O.S Black and Decker burr mill and I currently grind my beans at home and bring the grounds to school.

I'm looking for an affordable hand grinder I can keep in my locker. I wouldn't be doing any fine grinding and I just make single cups so I feel like a hand grinder would work and wouldn't be so loud.

I found this norpro one http://www.amazon.com/Norpro-5548-Coffee-Grinder/dp/B000M2C6NU/ref=pd_sim_k_2/175-1702416-3268853

Do you think this would be okay? I have never used manual grinders before and would like something affordable that would fit in a locker and not completely suck. Any input is appreciated.

sexy.

at my spot we run a 3 group GB5 that's been extensively worked over and upgraded and pulls the most consistent shots ever, and a linea, which I absolutely despise. place up the street just opened with the slayer, but they have 16oz caps on the menu so clearly the owners have more money than sense or knowledge about the industry they're getting into.

I see so many amazing machines with shit staff, I can't get worked up about it any more.

Also that machine I posted was by Kees van der Westen, a Dutch guy who has been completely redesigning la Marzoco's for ages, LM even wanted to purchase and build his designs, but he didn't.

This one is his ultimate home machine, the Speedster, crazy thing.

theres another shop near here that has a lever machine from Kees van der Westen, the idrocompresso. but nobody there actually uses the level how it should be used so it seems like a waste to have it there.

Such a waste, the worst example I know is from this Dutch who bought a 2nd hand 5-year old Mirage.

This is how it looked when he got it in:

This is a small part of the 3,6kg of scale that he got out of the boiler:

thought you guys might enjoy this.

it's how I ground my coffee this morning. not surprisingly the grounds were not consistent at all haha.

I had that same grinder for a bit. get the Hario ceramic slim like I suggested earlier. It's got a plastic container so it's great for camping, lockers, etc.

after you get it, just search "hario ceramic slim mod". It will show you how to modify it for more consistent drip and press grinds.

the video I posted above is my fully modded ceramic slim. It does a really good job when I don't use a cordless drill...

Now you have something to dream about.

This show the unique 'gear stick' action.

Bought my dad a Bosch/Tassimo collab machine so I use whatever is in the cupboard haha. Not too picky about my coffee, I just drink it black.

I would suck, no better I would deeptroath several cocks just to get the drip tray of the Speedster.

That thing is so sexy.

Found my french press, poor thing was lost for over 9 months, celebrated by making a cup of some single origin Ethiopian coffee.

What do I need in order to make good espresso? I want just an inexpensive espresso machine with nothing else, no steamers or whatever. Is there such a thing?

Currently I have a filter coffee machine which only my roommate uses, I don't really want to put beans in that and then drink it.

Check out Coda Coffee out of Denver. They have a bunch of different roast at a good price (some with free shipping) and the people there are awesome!

http://www.codacoffee.com

Plus if you enter "coda" in the promo code when you are checking out they donate 40% of the payment to help train service dogs for the deaf and hard-of-hearing!

We had one of those a few years back, but it broke, and we never got a new one. This was before I started drinking coffee, so I never tasted it. But then I had a cup last year or whenever it was, it was so amazing. It was some kind of Ethiopian coffee too. Still remember the the taste.

Personally I have a MoccaMaster for the daily cups. Love it to death, but sometimes I wish I had something to make an espresso in.

Pretty much everything has a steamwand, try to look on ebay/craigslist 2ndhand for ubercheap.

But the cheapest proven set-up that would produce a nice cup of coffee would be:

A Baratza Maestro grinder.

And a Saeco Via Venezia, ubercheap second hand, great little machine, with pressurized portafilter so more forgiving on a grind that's not so consistent. (can be modded to non-pressurized.)

i drink a lot of coffee, mainly Blue Mountain coffee from jamaica. use my dad's $800 italian coffee machine. usually black, sometimes with liquer or cream. tastes good. makes me poop.

If anyone in here happens to be in Lethbridge, AB you HAVE to go to Cuppers. I have yet to find a better roaster. Even though I live 3 hours away now I make sure to bring a few bags of their Spitfire Joe beans back every time I go home.

it's a coffee machine from italy that cost $800. it's not mine, i just make coffee with it sometimes, don't really care what it is.

Coda is a terrible Denver roaster. Huckleberry and Boxcar roast well, and Novo is stepping their game up but still lagging, but overall the entire denver roasting scene is weak.

I'm sad. I just finished the vietnamese coffee my brother gave for christmas. it was so good, really chocolaty due to a special mocha bean they blend it with, not bitter at all, just a nice chocolaty coffe flavou. Its from a vietnames coffee shop near where he lives in london called ca phe vnthis is the coffee

vietnamese-cofffee-carton.jpg

and i use the traditional vietnamese coffee maker which sits on top of the cup and the coffee strains through

Question, is there that big of an advantage to grinding on the spot? It takes me probably 20 or so days to kill a 1 pound bag. Any recommendations for reliable cheap grinders.

I'm surprised no one has posted this yet. I don't own one, but the one time I had the pleasure of drinking a cup made in this beast it was heavenly.

Also, to me the measure of a good cup of coffee is a cup which the flavors change in as the temperature changes. It allows you to truly experience the intricacies of the roast, the grind and the brew.

Wow I did not realize how ham people went with their coffee. Just using a keurig machine with k cups is making me feel pretty inferior right about now.
