Official 2010/2011 NHL Thread

This is just not how things are done in the NHL. If a guy is hurt, you stay silent, you do not play replays of the injury on the screens, and when he leaves the ice you applaud (i.e., what happened when Horton got carted off). It's just insanely hypocritical to accuse anyone of being "classless" or "denigrating the game" when people are mocking an injured player.

Raymond has a fractured vertebrae and is out for an estimated four months.

well now it won't be.

and you;ve got to be joking, Boychuk had all the opportunity in the world to stop. Even look at the replay, he kicked out his right leg right at the end for that extra little push into the boards when the puck was on the other side of the ice/Raymond hadn't even touched it. If the hit on Horton gets a suspension for a hit that normally wouldn't have been a penalty, Boychuk should get suspended just the same.

yeah, Boychuk pushed him into the boards a tad but they were already tangled up/engaged from trying to make a play on the puck. there's no way Boychuk should be suspended for that hit, the hits are distinctly different.

Well that certainly makes Boston sound like a shitty city, 'throws elderly baseball managers to the ground? and don't give a fuck if you're lying there paralyzed?' Nice man, nice.....

I'd rather smash my head between a car door for 3 hours before reading another one of your hockey posts

That crowd would have been going nuts if the Horton hit happened in Vancouver, no doubt about it. It's the Stanley Cup final people, get over it. If you can't handle the jeers and catcalls, go watch Basketball with all the other pussies. I'm just pumped that the Sedin Sisters have been complete nonfactors in this series. 1 goal between the two of them, are you kidding me? Thing 1 and Thing 2--or as Mike Milbury so aptly described them--Thelma and Louise, have sucked ass all over the ice. The Bruins have locked those suckers down! And don't get me started about the Canucks power play...atrocious!
On the Bruins side, Kaberle has been a bit of a disappointment all year, he was supposed to be a stud. I thought he had vindicated all the haters last night with a goal, but it turns out that Ryder ricocheted the puck into the net with his stick. LOL. I would also love to see Seguin play a bit more. Aside from Marchand, Seguin is probably the quickest and deadliest sniper the Bruins have. Play him, Claude!

i'm obviously fucking around. if you think i enjoyed Pedro throwing Don Zimmer to the ground, I didn't. i felt fucking awful for the guy. I love my city.

says the guy from Boston.

You don't watch much hockey do you? In almost any regular season game if the guy bounced up right away there would have been no repercussion, except Rome being targeted for the rest of the game. Maybe there would have been an interference penalty if the refs were calling a lot. The suspension clearly came from the fact that he got injured.

So then you look at the other hit, I agree no penalty would normally be taken on that. But then he got injured, all the same. From something Boychuk could easily have avoided doing. And his injury is far worse than Rome. If Rome was suspended based solely on the fact that Horton was injured, then Boychuk should also be suspended on the exact same grounds.

If it wasn't game 7 tomorrow, Boychuk would get what's coming for him. All the same, he's gonna get booed every time he touches the puck.

it was a late, semi-dirty hit that caused a devastating injury for Horton. How can you not expect repercussions from a hit like that? it wasn't legal, and it put a player out for the remainder of the series. Rome's hit would have been penalized regardless of outcome.

stop comparing the two hits because they're entirely different. Boychuk and Raymond were carrying into the boards anyway. Maybe Boychuk could have laid off a tad, but Raymond still would have hit the boards in a really awkward way. Both players were making a play on the puck and they got tangled up. shut the fuck up, you're argument is stupid, and you're sounding really really bitchy.

In no way was that a late hit at all, it's called finishing your check if you even know hockey. Yes it was unfortunate the position he was hit in, but a legal hit nonetheless.
After pages and posts of sure stupidity it may be time for you to leave.

fans had no way of knowing the extent of his injury. most of them probably saw him go down, and that was it. I didn't hear much chanting when both trainers had to go out on the ice and he could barely move.

The pedro/zimmer thing is totally unrelated...but for what it's worth, an old coach shouldn't be charging an active pitcher and expect pity when he gets thrown down. What happens if pedro gets injured because of zimmer and misses part of the season? Ruins the sox chances.

And yea, Boston is a bit of a hostile sports city. But there are much worse places you can be. And apparently it's working, because the canucks have barely resembled a hockey team when playing at the garden.

seriously though, time to focus on game 7. Everything else is in the past and becoming irrelevant. I'm fucking pumped for it! It's what hockey is all about.

dude most people arent saying the two hits are exactly the same so stop trying to argue that... the issue is that by the leagues ruling on rome he

1. made clean contact late with a player in a vulnerableposition

2. and a major injury was sustained causing horton to be out of the series

3. it was a hockey play gone bad

by those two rulings it should have the exact same result as the hit on horton. no it wasnt a dirty hit and it wasnt as big as the hit on horton but the "bigness" of the hit doesnt matter. bruins fans bitched about how rome didnt let up on horton and now canucks fans are bitching about how boychuk didnt let up on raymond. so no the argument is not stupid and this entire series has been bitchy. i just want the cup

the nucks cant stand up for themselves. when they start shit they just sit there are take it. if there was a bench clearing brawl (not saying that will ever happen) im pretty sure the bruins u screw up the nucks. they cant stand up for themselves. yes they can hit well (at times) but when it comes down to fights. they couldn't do shit.

and the whole team is scared of thornton. its obvious.

back to the subject of game 7.... this will be such a close game. who ever scores first wins it. but i think the bruins can get over the vancouver losses and get a goal in the 2nd and the nucks will tie it up later on in the period. then boston winning it with like 5 minutes to go in the third. both teams will be fired up. but boston cant lose this.... they have the better team, they have more enthusiasm, they have the better goalie, they are playing for a team member, they're playing for all of new england. they got this. lets go b's!

I'm curious, who here is actually from Boston, or Vancouver?I'm from a Boston suburb, so I guess that counts. Where are the true fans at?

i go to school in Waltham, right outside of Boston but i'm originally from Central Mass. Worcester Ice Cats til i die!....oh wait, they're gone.

It wasn't Pedro's fault that old fkn coot had two left feet. Fuck Don Zimmer in his pale wrinkly ass hahahahaha... He's lucky it wasn't DingoSean, the man would have been beaten into a coma on the spot instead of sidestepped.

About Raymond tho... WTF? Clearly an accident and an unfortunate one for sure, but anybody crying foul should just GTFO, as that's a perfect example of two guys wrapped up in play and nothing else. Raymond is a great player and a freakin wizard on skates (toe drag in game 2 was sick!) but c'mon guys and girls, take off your offended hat and watch the play. Nobody intended to hurt anybody, the guys got wrapped up and coasted into the boards. Get on with your lives, it was the least intense "hit" of the night.

Fuckin' NAIL BITER for game 7 tho! Boston OWNS in Boston and the games in Van have been tighter than a virgin in church... Can they get their shit together and play the game of their lives on the road??? I think so, but only time will tell- I just don't think Van can out-heart the Bs in a game like this. All I know for sure is it will be a fucking incredible game and I can't wait!

For people lacking reading skills... nowhere did I mention anything about a "lack of penalty" or suspension over the hit, solely that it was super lame that your arena was calling "diving" while he was face down on the ice for a prolonged period of time, enough to warrant the team doc coming out on the ice.

Who did that? I know most people outside of the Van. bubble agrees your beloved 'Nucks are classless and kinda a disgrace to the game, what with all the diving and the Tyson Borrows biting in game one.

But who mocked Raymond once it was clear he was hurt? I can't think of anyone... But to anyone watching the game, it was a very benign hit and he went down hard and stayed down... You know the story of the boy who cried wolf? THAT IS THE EXACT SITUATION. That's EXACTLY what went on here and why some B's fans mocked him initially. Your team has been taking clean hits and diving and faking injuries for days, see how it looks to us? Boy who cried wolf... The 'Nucks dive 90 times in the series and when all of a sudden a seemingly harmless hit results in a Nuck player on the ground, what do you think it looks like? A flop. I even thought he was diving until they showed him again and he wasn't moving... you guys are usually good about getting up once there is no call so I knew he was hurt. I felt remorse, that's a shitty way to end your Stanley Cup Finals, hope he makes a full recovery.

Regardless, once it was clear he was hurt I don't recall hearing anything being chanted other than "Let's Go Bruins". Nor do I recall seeing anyone in this thread making fun of him for the injury. Can you show me where someone has made a comment about Raymond besides saying that it was an unlucky play and a good non-call, nothing more or less?

Not at all hypocritical and you should know that Mr. I've-been-to-law-school. Find me someone who mocked Raymond's hit once it was clear he was hurt and we'll go from there.

The 'Nucks should be on Full House with all the acting, I mean you already have Mary-Kate and Ashley on pay-roll and Luongo is more hilarious than Dave Coulier ever was.

No one ever said you did...

^read Melvs post if you want to understand the stadiums reaction to that hit, once the doctors came out and it was obvious he was hurt the "Diver" chanting stopped and was replaced by a "Lets Go Bruins" chant...

So i havent been active on NS in about a year now, but i know NS is good for some hockey talk. Lots of canadians, lots of hockey fans. I can dig that. I have only read the past couple pages, and here is my take on the finals

1. Aaron Rome's hit was definitely suspendable

No question in my mind. That puck had been away from horton's stick long before Rome even started churning his legs. Just a brutal, late, open ice hit. Was it a blind hit? No. Was it dirty? Arguable. Given the nature of the sport of hockey, it's hard to brand a late, yet otherwise clean (its not like he took his stick and crosschecked horton's face; the elbows were down, stick was low, skates were on the ice), hit as dirty. This finals has been a matter of physicality and goaltending, so such a hit, when compared to biting and taunting and Burrows, is relatively clean.

2. Roberto Luongo = Lebron James = Everything a star should not be

The 10 million dollar, highest NHL salary man can't handle the playoff atmosphere in Boston. Simple as that. 17 goals in 3 games, just pure atrocious. Choking in the playoffs. And when he avoids a back of the net onslaught in vancouver, he criticizes thomas. Its one thing to be comparing styles of goalie play, butterfly/paint vs aggressive, but that's not what Lu was doing. starting an answer with "it's not hard if youre playing in the paint so, it's an easy save for me" is not in any way innocently comparing styles. A more appropriate answer would be to entirely avoid the question as Thomas did during last night's postgame press conference, or saying something along the lines of, "We have different playing styles, I think my method allows me to more easily make that save."

3. There is no doubt mocking Raymond was wrong.

As a diehard boston fan, last night's "diving" and "faking" labels kind of disgusted me. I'm all for Marchand barraging the sedin sisters' faces with a flurry on unanswered fists. I'm all for Milan Lucic slashing the fuck out of burrows' legs and then blasting burrows' face with a closed hand. I'm all for shoving fingers in his face. But mocking a man that was down on the ice? Cmon boston, were better than that. Injuries are serious business and I hate seeing them. Id hate if the Canucks were reduced to a 0% chance of winning the cup if it was because of injuries. Id like to see our fans applaud a man who is by default of being an NHL player, undeniably tougher than 99% of the crowd, combined, as he skates off the ice in pain. Good sportsmanship is the best sportsmanship.

4. The law of averages states that Boston is bound to win a game in vancouver

This series could easily be 6-0. The bruins have matched every step the canucks have taken, yet are 0-3 in vancouver. if two teams are playing an even level of hockey, one team is not going to win all the games. Lets just hope (Boston fans only) that the bruins win in vancouver in game 7.

Alright to all the the unknowledgable Boston fans, no1 is comparing the hits between Rome and Boychuk as being similar hits but they can be comparable.

First the Rome hit was clean, although late. There is a difference between a dirty hit and a late hit. The original call on the ice was just an interference penalty which is why he was originally in the box. Once they saw the severity of the injury to Horton he got kicked out, complete BS, you don't punish him for the result, you punish him for the action.

He got suspended because the hit was late/interference and the severity of the concussion to Horton(Debatable)

So if you look at the hit on Raymond it was also interference, although of a different, Raymond never touched but got driven into the boards none the less, if you think Boychuk had no choice but to do this, your retarted he could of avoided the entire incident.

So now both incidents essentially could be equal, both plays should have received interference penalties, although only 1 did. This should also be the extent of the calls on BOTH plays.

However, as Horton stayed down on the ice longer the refs changed the call on the ice and he was ejected, the suspension came later and the severity of the hit played a huge role in Rome getting 4 games, not the hit itself.

So now Raymond is out for the rest of SCF and all summer, thus he won't be in shape prob for next season. So both players got serious injuries and while one injury resulted in a player getting the book thrown at him like none before the other is getting off scot-free.

This is what annoys me, while imo neither are suspendable actions the reasoning behind the Rome suspension can be also be used in the Boychuk hit, but its not. There is NO Consistency with what the NHL is doing. I don't expect him to be suspended and i know he won't but i would just like clarification from the league about why one player his held accountable for his actions an another isnt.

And i can't believe they actually chanted 'diver' at Raymond as he lay on the ice, so fucking disgraceful, then when he finally gets up do they applaud? no, they chant 'lets go bruins' and people think that Vancouver has no class, so disgraceful to the game. The thing that really shocked me though was that i didn't even see a single Bruins player even slap their stick on the ice or boards.

And to the person that said if the Rome hit happened in Vancouver the same thing would happen, yes the fans would have got loud at the original impact of the hit but once the severity of the hit was saw they would not have booed him and would have applauded when he was taken of the ice.

Also one last thing, Rome got suspended 4 game for the severity of the concussion to Rome, now i am not saying that he isn't injured or anything, he obviously is and has symptoms but they can't be that severe that if 1 week after the hit is in the arena waving a flag exposed to bright lights and loud noise 2 of the things you want to avoid after being concussed, just ask Mitchell.

^ you're post is too long for most people to read...

Why are you comparing the two hits, they were nothing in similarity and I'm pretty sure most people would agree with that statement. You're comparing apples to oranges.

Raymond got hurt due to an accident... it was barely a hit

Horton got hurt on an intentional full scale slam.

That's how the refs saw it, so don't yell at me.

a quick defense of that.... 1 that wasnt a hit. boychuck's stick was caught in raymonds legs.

2 the collision wasnt hard at all.... its hard for fans to see exactly how someone got hurt while going slowly into the boards.... so thats why they thought it was a dive.

no one in boston wanted to see someone get a compound vertabrae fracture. your a douche for thinking we want to see them get hurt. NO ONE WANTS TO SEE ANYONE HURT IN ANY WAY were over the horton hit and we were over it before game 4. now please let hockey be hockey (a sport in which shit happens) and let it go.

Stats aren't on Boston's side, sorry man. A

2-0 lead results in a series win over 90% of the time in the Stanley

cup playoffs, 100% of the games won in this series have been on home

ice, EA Games has correctly predicted every series in these playoffs and

they've called the Canucks to win it in 7 from the start. Calgary and

Montreal won the cup the year after hosting the Olympics.

I hate stats like these. they dont mean shit. you really thing a canadian team winning the cup the year after canada has hosted the olympics has an effect on the outcome of this years cup finals? you think ea sports has some sort of magical hokus pokus influence on the cup? the 2-0 thing actually does mean something though, but how many of the 90% let the other team get to 2-2 then 3-3?

ill give you some relevant stats that actually mean something

boston is outscoring vancouver 19-8 this series

tim thomas' save pct is like .940 or something

luongo's is like .800 or something like that

throw all that garbage stat mumbo jumbo aside. who has played better this series? boston, no doubt. right there with the canucks in vancouver, crushing the canucks in boston

and one other point

if im playing monopoly, and a 4 gets rolled 50 times in a row, that does not affect the probability of rolling a 4 on my next roll whatsoever. it's still 3/36. so just because ea sports has predicted every series does not mean it holds any more validity this series. (that is to say that ea sports predicts it by setting up a series of NHL '11 with 2 computerized teams, not a person predicting it)

lol i don't can't even call that a defense because i wasn't really arguing, just trying to point out how inconsistent the league is with calls and disciplinary actions, whether it be suspensions or just minor penalties.

i never said i thought u wanted to see people hurt, just stating you can clearly see he's injured when going off the ice and instead of applauding they start chanting, just not how its done, probably not everyone but they overcame anyone who was clapping or cheering.

and let what go? im not ranting that i think Boychuk should be suspended or anything just want calls the be even for both these teams these playoffs and going forward into next season. you just decided to take my entire post as hate, not my fault. try reading posts from a neutral perspective
