Official 2010/2011 NHL Thread

Here's my theory, it's called the equivalent city energy theory. This has to do with when two sports teams from the same city are playing at the same time. I know this sounds ridiculous, but hear me out. It two sports teams from the same cities have a game the same night and are both away, only one can win while the other loses. Take for instance last night. Both the Red Sox and the Bruins were away, and both in Canada. The Rod Sox Won, while the bruins lost. Pure chance? Perhaps, but on Wed. May 4th the Red Sox and home lost to the Angels, while the Bruins at home beat the Flyers. On May 25th the Bruins were away against the Lightening and lost 5-4. That same night the Red Sox were away against the Cleveland Indians and they won 14-2. Pure Coincidence? Probably, but for the Bruins to win the Stanley cup, according to my theory they will win on Monday, because their first home game against the Canucks the Red Sox did not play, and the Canucks got destroyed. Thus on Wed. June 15th the Red Sox, who are away against the Rays, must lose in order for the Bruins to receive the positive side of the dichotomy of the energy.

Dumb phone. Sox are a straight laser show right now. 16-4 today against Jays. At least we got some Canadian redemption there

BRILLIANT. I'll take two losses from the Sox at this point in the season for the Bruins to win the cup anyday. Hell I'll take getting swept by the yankees in a ten game series for the Bruins to win.

ps when I watched Luango try to say that he would have easily made that save I shit my pants, proceeded to get reallllllllly fucking mad to the point i looked up where luango lived, but then i realized he's such a pathetic little fuck who is about to let in a double digit figure in boston and decided not to hurt him.

yea luongo has let up like fucking 14 goals in 5 games. thomas has let up like 6. luongo cant be talking.... thomas's tactics hav been workign better than luongo. and thomas is gunna win vezna cuz he is so athletic that when he does get into a bad situation 7/10 times he gts himself out of it. no other goalie in hockey can do that

Eh someone was talking about bruins winning when sox lose which isn't really true cause we won game 4 same night sox won against Yankees. Were good for Monday though it's an off day. Like some one else said at this point I'd take two sox loses for the bruins to win

See that's the difference between you assholes and us. You'd trade two regular season baseball losses for a cup for your team, I'd trade my fucking pinky finger.

canucks dominated last game, the score didnt reflect shit and anybody who watched knows that. boston fans pull your heads out of your asses and respect when the other team played better.

I'd trade your pinky finger too. If you think that a couple kids on newschoolers accurately represents the Boston fanbase, you're severely mistaken. Walk into the garden with a Canucks shirt on. Hop on the T in a yankees jersey. Youll love it.

I love how every single Boston fan here descended into a state of raging deafness the second they heard Luongo take a shot at their golden boy, who by the way is the only player keeping them in these games--

None of you seemed to hear that in the SAME SENTENCE he also complimented Thomas on being able make saves he cannot. JD is on point. How would you feel if one of the the first questions in the press conference after a shut-out win was about the other keeper?

I wouldnt say he's the only one keeping them in the games any more than Luongo's keeping Vancouver in games...
Boston's won 2 games by 11 goals over...
Vancouver's won 3 games by 1 goal in each...
The offensive output by boston in games 3 and 4 is too obvious to say that Thomas is the only thing allowing them to do squat.

I don't really follow NHL very much (Wild Suck.), but my brother was re-watching the NCAA Frozen Four finals today (MN-DULUTH v.s. Michigan) and since I was finally a fan of a winning team, HOW BOUT THEM BULLDOGS.

I think it is largely a matter of opinion, but if it was any goalie in net other than Thomas in games 3 and 4, I highly doubt the Canucks would have been held off the score sheet in the first periods, and I think both games would have gone down differently.

Again, opinion. Canucks fell apart in the 2nd in both games so it's impossible to say how it could have gone differently.

I guess theres more left in the series, but the winner of the vezina (thomas) should not be talked about at all in a condescending manner especiially by someone who gave up 8 goals in a single game and 4 in the next.

Now I havn't heard what Luongo said, so I hope i'm not jumping to conclusions. Correct me if i'm wrong But it sounds like Luongo had a couple criticisms regarding Thomas? Why doesn't he mind his buisness?

@hockeyplayer: I think he just got defensive over the question is all. I can sympathize, honestly. I didn't hear any other shit-talk from him.

well i can understand. It sounded like everyone was making a huge deal about something he said.

I'm a a bruins fan so my point of view on this matter might be biased. what do other people think about Thomas winning the Vezina? it seems fairly obvious that he's the best candidate am i right? I can't think of a superior goaltender.

word. With his goaltending skills it would be a shame if the bruins still lost the cup.... We will wait and see. I am definitely feeling a game 7 though.

You guys know the playoffs have nothing to do with the Vezina right? He had that thing won 2 months ago, broke records statistically. That said, Luongo would have been close enough to make it an argument had he started the season better.

i think regardless of who wins the cup, thomas deserves it. Luongo is definitely a great goalie, but i just don't think he's had quite the impact and overall level of excellence that thomas has.

I'm not talking about 1 season... and all star teams don't count and thats basketball. If i was black and 7 feet i'd be good.

I'm talking about dominating a sport continuously. CCCP were a machine

Luongo asked for further comment on the Thomas thing:

"I said also that he might make some saves that I don't,

so I was just saying on that particular play I would have played it

different and that's the difference between me and him."

"I've been pumping his tires ever since the series started, and I

haven't heard one nice thing he had to say about me, so that's the way

it is."

You do realize that defense has a lot to do with goals scored, don't you? Tim Thomas has been playing well, but there are ALWAYS 2-3 boston players in front of him in front of the net. Boston defense has been on their game, whereas Vancouver hasn't. Part of the goals are the goalies fault, but the defense has a big part to play. Also Vancouver played like shit offensively those two boston games, how the hell is lack of offensive playing the goalies fault?
2 games does not mean he is a bad goalie, look at the entire season and playoffs. You don't get your team to 1st overall standings with a bad goalie.
Tim Thomas is a good goalie, but Boston also has been playing excellent defensive hockey. They go hand in hand.

So you're saying if the canucks were able to come back every time they went down a goal in those games that it still would have been such a high scoring game? After 3-0 a team has lost almost all faith (except your sharks ) and they start to play even worse, thus letting the other team light them up again

Point I'm really trying to make is that in the 3 games that Luongo's been the winning goalie, he's posted two 1-0 shutouts, and an OT 3-2 win. He's kept them in games just as Thomas has... However, he's gonna get some heat after his performances in game 3 and 4 on tha road, all the same.

I like the reporter asking Luongo 'from on offensive standpoint, does the ice in Boston slow you guys down at all'

he couldn't have asked that to absolutely anyone else on the team?

He doesn't get anywhere near the credit for it Thomas does though. It's kind of ridiculous. For the sake of argument, let's say game 6 is another shutout, 1-0, 2-0, whatever. That would mean Luongo had essentially won 3 of 4 games. I don't think anyone has ever had 3 shutouts in the finals. Yet would he win the Conn Smythe? No, the losing goalie would still have a better chance. The guy is like Rodney Dangerfield, can't get no respect.

Just looked it up, apparently Brodeur did it in 07 and somehow didn't win the Conn Smythe so apparently stupider things have happened.

he's not going to get the same respect because of the shit games he had in Boston. to the average spectator, when something goes wrong it's the goalies fault.

The Devils didnt even make the finals in 2007... Nor did he shut either TB or OTT out 3 times in either series...
I believe you mean 2003 lol. Ironically, J-S Gigeure won it that year... POSSIBLY because he was better over the entire playoffs that year... but it's still BS in my opinion, because Brodeur shut them out 3 times and sent another one scoreless into OT... He could have had 4 shutouts to win the finals. Crazy.

^point being, the finals should be weighted a bit higher than the other 3 rounds, since it's the pinnacle of the entire playoffs and everyones throwing everything into it.
Brodeur had 3 shutouts in the opening 3 rounds... one in each... Fucking dominance that year... I was wanting them to win it that year too, since the Sharks were garbage that season for some reason (last time they didnt make the playoffs...

Yeah it was 03. Basically the same situation and yes Giggy carried the Ducks to the finals single-handedly, that was the year they swept the Wings in rd 1 against all odds. Also the year the Nucks lost a 3-1 series lead to the Wild, if not for Dan Cloutier we probably would've been in the finals, that was a tough year.

The point is, Lou has been really good throughout the playoffs and has been awesome at home in these finals and if we win it, he is our #1 star in this series (barring another game singlehandedly won by Alex Burrows, I guess). Because of 2 bad games in rd 1 and 2 bad games in rd 4, he isn't even in the Conn Smythe discussion, whereas Thomas who has had bad games in all 3 prior series is the frontrunner, win or lose. What gives? Media loves storylines, I guess.

I always feel like the Conn Smythe is semi-overrated...
That, and who the hell wants some statue of Maple Laff Gardens sitting around their house? meh...

For me the Conn is as big if not bigger than the Hart. The best player when it really counts the most is a pretty big deal.
