So I attend school at Westminster College in Salt Lake City UT, and I

am in an art class with the biggest joke of a teacher at the head of

it. Not only does she vaguely resemble one of the ogres from the

Tolkien series, but she is completely and utterly incompetent at

anything involving anything, but that is beside the point. We were

recently assigned a self portrait project and me being the

"thug"/slacker I am, decided to draw mine with a bandanna on my face,

and thinking that it was appropriately "G" looking wrote "Thug Life" in

the corner of my drawing. It actually turned out pretty good and I was

stoked to finally get a good grade on one of my stupid art projects.

When she handed them back, I was dismayed to see that I had only

received a 17 out of 25 on my real life masterpiece. When I confronted

her after class, her explanation for my low score, was being blatantly

offensive through my artwork. She asked me if "Thug Life" was the name

of a song by "2 Pac or some rap gangster", and when I stated that it

was a joke and I actually did not think I was a "Gangster", she told me

that that was no excuse, and that displaying signs of gang affiliation

was extremely offensive to the other students in the class. I looked at

her in confused manner, but she just gazed back with the usual

dumbfounded dull look that usually resides on her face. I have no idea

how she managed to think rationally that my drawing was offensive in any

way, and even if it was at all justifiable, its art for Christ sake,

its for expressing yourself...

So she told me I can erase the thug life and bandanna and get the full

points, but I am considering just blowing her off. Thoughts?

Erase the hat and bandanna and make it like a popped collar and spiked hair and make it say "Guido life"She'll never understand it
 
haha in my art class if i wrote thug life i would get a zero instantly, fucking ap art is so intense
i would take the bandana and thug life out but make yourself black
 
wow... i think i go to the same college as you... who are you... i also think i love that picture... and maybe you should change the word but keep the bandana cuz its sick... maybe put striaght G or warm face steeze or skkierman or something... what teacher too? i dont want her
 
if she tells you to erase the bandana and thug life and she will give you more points she isnt grading you on your art work which is the point of this class. and you in an art have the right to artistic expression which is the point of this class. so in no way should you erase that shit.
 
tell her your offended she's stepping on your artistic expression. i'm actually kinda mad about this. ugh fuck teachers.
 
I love that as I read this Im watching a documentary on Crypts in Utah.
Anyway, show her a video on Youtube of someone skiing with a bandana edited to gangster rap. Just erase the thug life part and tell her you were drawing yourself prepped for winter and added the thug life as a joke. If she doesnt fix your grade, talk to the dean and tell her this his your favorite way of viewing yourself and the teacher is being prejudice.
 
maybe take off thug life, but why the bandana? just be like oh skiers wear them, and i am a skier. then slit her throat with your edges to show her whats up
 
´Me too. I hate people who get offended too easily, and even though she really didn't get offended I don't think me and your teacher would get along too easily.
 
Dont change a fucking thing... your teachers a dumb bitch and if my teacher told me to change MY art id tell her to shove it up her ass, you can express yourself anyway you want... fuck her, dont change anything its a super sick picture. I hate teachers especialy the dumb bitches.
 
i dunno, i'd erase the "thug life", but keep the bandana. who is she to tell you what your art should look like?
 
Tell your teacher this dont change your work at all.. after all its artwork... Would picaso change his artwork because some one called it blasphemy? no because thats the point of art. the point of atr is to test the limits. tell her if she doesnt understand that then she can go tach chemestry or something with lethal objects. but leave out the lethal objects part. anyways the whole point of art is that its art no matter what it looks like no matter what its of. if it looks alright or promots a deep feeling people will like it... tell your parents about it maybe, and then get them to get ahold of the pricipal and say she was picking on you for being different.
 
you were asked to draw a self portrait... thats not just a picture of how you look, but it should also portray you deeper than your physical appearance...

you drew an image of yourself in a bandana and chose to write the phrase "thug life" next to it. in doing so, you portrayed yourself as a "gangster" which you even said yourself... you are clearly not.... there is nothing skiing related in that picture....

therefore, you did not do the assignment. you drew an image that was perhaps how you wish to be portrayed. but not actually you. i realize that the image was inspired somewhat by your sense of humor, but then u go on to defend your drawing as art and self expression. so you ARE a gangster now?

maybe this is a chance for you and most of ns to realize how rediculous and foolish this whole "gangster" fad is... in an upper class, predominantly white activity.
 
and maybe its your chance to see where else can people dress up like black people without having to worry about real gangstas, or people saying shit like "dont make fun of our way of life thats racist" then you come off the hill and have to deal with ogre like teachers... I say fight for your rights.. If you dont who will.. certainly not the government.

so you see it as your chance to "dress up" like black people because they cant afford to get on the ski hill and shoot down this racist mockery?

IMO Sadly this is what kills art. I used to be HUGE into art, Im not going to lie, I thought I was pretty dang good at it too. Until I started getting serious and taking classes for it in High school, they killed my originality and it was all about what they think my art should be like
 
...i'm pretty sure there are a lot of black people who can afford to ski or snowboard, they just choose not to for whatever reason. not every black person is living on welfare.
 
i wasnt saying that...

he said he was safe on the ski hill from the conseqences that would occur if he acted the same way in a different setting... say... a black community. but i doubt he was referring to a wealthy one....
 
Do it for yourself an no one else thats what its ment to be... who cares if you dont get paid for it... no one is really famouse for art till they're dead anyways.
 
well its not really your art if you have to change its apperance for a teacher, and secondly what gang does "thug life" affiliate to? if the professor can have a thug life tattoo on his back in futurama which plays on comedy central im pretty sure its not a gang refference, its not even a drug refference.
 
its not even a refference to anything... Its just a saying like you born in a barn... you know that person wasn't born in a barn. or like let's shoot some pool... we all know your not going to grab a gun and start shooting in random peoples back yards aiming for their pool.
 
I didnt read that part about you being in college... I suggest just telling her flat out be like look this is college, ifwere were in highschool I could see, but its college also add that she should find someone else to parent, cuase your not gonna take her bullshit answers. and if she gives you some stupid remark just tell her that you're paying to be there and you're not going to let some stupid teacher hold you back on talent cause telling you cant do things in art is rediculus, art is limitless.
 
Thats a fucking joke. Art is about personal expression. Art has no boundaries, and no limitations. She asked for a specific project , you delivered, end of story. Your teacher needs to get off her high horse and open her eyes to the world.
 
Agreed. Art should never be censored period. Our art teacher (at my high school) understands this and NEVER says you can't draw/paint/sculpt etc. something, and that's the way it should be, uncensored, free personal expression.
 
Great art is rarely understood in its own time. Guernica, the Roof of the Sistine Chapel, and The Scream quickly come to mind as examples of censored art. You should be proud.
