Offcial Wax Thread

For everybody out there with waxing questions just read this thread

First off I would like to say if you have a little money and would like to take care of your equipment wax your skis.

Tools needed for waxing

Iron- go to Walmart and pick up the cheapest one u can find

Wax- Cheap wax is fine I'll go into detail about this later

Vises- Not essential to wax your skis but very nice to have if you want to scrape

Plastic Scraper- Don't use metal scrapers for removing wax. It screws ur bases up

Rubber Band- Again you don't need this, but it is nice when scraping. You can uses them to get your ski brakes out of the way while waxing and scraping

Cork- This tool is only need for rub on waxing. If you are not rub on waxing you do not need this.

Types of Waxing Processes

Hot Waxing- In this process you take the iron and drip the wax onto your ski. Once u have a good amount on your skis take the iron and start spreading it around. Make sure to get every part of your base. Now most people scrape once the wax is dry, but you can leave it on there while you ski. For the first couple of runs it will feel slow but as the day goes your skis will feel fine and fast. This takes less time and will protect your skis a little better from dirty snow. You can also scrape the wax off before you ski. Wait about 20-30mins after you are done waxing your skis and then scrape them. This will make ur skis feel very fast at first, but towards the end of the day all the wax will be worn off and they will be a little slower. My opinion just leave the wax on.

Rub on Waxing- In this process you take a chunk of wax and just crayon it all over the base. After you have covered the whole base you then take a cork and rub over the skis. Rub it very fast because the friction is basically melting the little amount of wax into your base. You will know you are done once you don't see much wax on your skis. Personally I think this is a waste of waxing, but if you want a little boost this can do the trick.

Hot Scraping- If you have skied really dirty snow you can do this process to clean your bases of your skis. Take a chunk of wax melt it and spread it just as you would do in hot waxing, but instead of letting the wax dry for 20-30min you scrape the wax off right away when the wax is still melted and soft. You can tell that your bases are dirty when the wax has dirt in it while you are scraping it off. This does the same thing as base cleaner, but isn't harsh on your skis.

Waxes

There are so many different types of waxes to choose from, but most of these waxes are for different types of snow and temperatures. For park skiers universal wax is best. This wax is good for anything and does the same thing as any other wax on the market. Basically get the cheapest wax you can get your hands on.

Spark notes: Waxing is easy and nice for your skis. Just fucking do it.

when hot waxing don't forget to crayon the wax into the bases before you hot wax otherwise you can scortch your bases. Crayoning is when you rub the bar of wax into your base before you wax

fuck that i wont be able to ski for like a week. but thanks for the offer... unless you were planning on stealing them

i like to scrape. and then after i scrape brush to texture the base a little. and the longer you wait before you scrape the better. and the easier it is to scrape i think.

also, its good to wipe down/brush before you wax, to avoid grinding dirt into your bases

i don't scrape, but if i am doing it for a friend, i will leave them in the garage over night.

when i worked at a shop, i was taught to

Buff down the ski.

melt/wax

scrape

cork

stone brush

buff.

yes brushing is good for your skis, i was just putting the bare essentials for waxing because so many people complain about money and the longer the wait the better is not true. Once the wax is dry and cool it doesnt need to sit for any longer because it has soaked into the base as much as it could. Usually it takes about 30mins for wax to cool, but if u want to make sure let them sit for an hour tops.

i brush/wipe the ski to get as much dirt and grit as possible

drip

wax

let it cool for usually an hour or two

scrape

brush

Has anybody on here ever hot boxed their skis? I'm wondering if it really helps much. Also, I have a sauna in my house, is that hot enough to function as a hot box?

yeah heres a vid from another thread made by an NSer, hope the embed works...

Brushing is good. Also if you haven't waxed for a while either do two coats (one to get the dirt out, one to wax) or brush your skiis gently before you wax to get some of the dirt out.
